  1. I didn't read the announcement until just now and here are a couple of thoughts: Nowhere, in any way or any were, is there a box checked, a comment made, or a suggestion given that this $600m deficit is NOT made up entirely, or nearly entirely, of the overhanging potential liability of having to pay GH. There is at least one sentence that could, possibly indicate that it IS the same $600m: "What is known now is that on top of the financial shortfall that was inherited, and with the increased expenses incurred dealing with the previous leadership’s actions including legal fees, training fees, reductions in sponsorship and USBands participation, the organization now finds itself with an approximate $600,000 deficit." If they were being careful with their words, and I'd bet they're insisting that their financial people are being very, very careful, and "deficit" is an operating income item that has not been converted to debt. A potential liability would necessarily be addressed on the current financials, if even in the Notes to the financials according to FASB accounting standards. It would, of course, also be perfectly appropriate to make 2019 expense projections with that deficit (or servicing its debt if need be) clearly in mind. This very difficult decision says very clearly to me that this financial accounting and leadership is playing straight as an arrow by the book, making tough choices based on reality and not some pie-in-the-sky vaticination by a starry-eyed band geek. Real business, finally. Way to go, Cadets. Great move.

  2. The C2 members will find other places that can and will be fulfilling if that's what they're looking for. If they think the "Cadets Experience" is the only one worth having, I feel bad for them.

  3. That early Park City Pride corps... first time I saw them was at the springtime Harrisburg concert. We had seats way up in the third level of the Forum that night... and PCP's horn line sounded like it was five feet in front of us. To date, that is the loudest alumni-corps horn line, and easily one of the loudest lines at any level, that I have ever heard. Talk about bringing the heat. Wow.

  4. Maybe it’s time to rename YEA to say The Cadets performing arts or something like that and have The Cadets brand as the major name focused. YEA is the name GH came up with as part of his larger plan for multiple groups he wanted under his umbrella. That’s my 2 cents.!

  5. The obfuscation is either intentional ($241,000 in Cadets "expenses" - Pfftt) or just sloppy book-keeping and reporting. Frankly, I'd be more than a little concerned about the press headlines attracting the attention of the IRS auditors to look over the current financials.

  6. A Brilliant move to attract members from C2 would be to offer the members that PAID the $150 camp fee back in November $150 off Dues for 2019.

  7. Rich did a magnificent job with the corps. For me, there is going to be a huge void in Williamsport next year. No matter whose idea it was for C2, it was a great idea and I loved their mission: To give The Cadets experience to those who couldn’t do junior corps for various reasons. And their mission was an amazing success. I’m thankful that I got those seven seasons. That’s all before I lose it.

  8. that had been waived on some occasions. and really so many DCA corps are younger today, so it wasn't substantially different than others in DCA. It was set up to be a feeder. Then, they came out good. Really you look at the placements from 2012-2018, only one other corps stayed in the top 6 annually during that time every year...Bucs, whose only title loss in that time was C2. Now I do know when it came to organization, C2 was an afterthought, especially as the season began administratively. The huge win for C2 was bringing in Rich Templin. Let's face it, Hop wasn't popular in DCA circles, and early on created some firestorms. the corps was welcomed however, and bringing Rich in gave C2 a tried and true DCA person known and trusted by all. Sadly Rich took the hit when everything exploded last April, and unfairly. He did right by the corps. He was especially helpful in getting the design team to understand what can and cant work on a DCA schedule. C2 does not get enough credit for the impact they made on DCA. They forced others to step up their game in many ways, and they influenced the on field product in several as well. I again get the business reasons. But it sucks. Big. And getting rained out last July didn't help them at all financially.

  9. I'm making an exception of my absence and withdrawal by posting these, but the situation warrants it. And yes, I'm feeling ok but new round of cancer treatments begin next week. At least one member of current BoD, perhaps two, is the parent of C2 alumni; the decision was not made lightly and has NOTHING to do with Alumni corps which is only a speculative possibility at this point with no performance appearances announced. It is more the influence that "Giving Tuesday" was not that giving. Monies aren't there for C2 budget, a Hopkins product. Other DCA corps are local for those who wish to march weekends only. I am surprised this article from yesterday's Allentown paper was not previously cited in the thread. Mr. Rutherford gives further comments. I won't, other than to cite that BD, SCV, and other major corps have cut back on their programs; BAC now has most expensive costs to mms. Times are $$$ tough for all corps.

  10. Best and smartest move they could make. Hopefully this will make the organization stronger and stable and run like a real company not some fantasy waiting for that big donation to keep them afloat for the season.

  11. Well put and I agree ive read the statement and watched the video version a couple times now, also doing a bit of reading between the lines they are seemingly taking a conservative approach and present a frank assessment of the situation thinking long term vs quick bandaid solution honest dialogue vs smoke and mirrors its painful, very, to lose C2 - even short term however the longer view they are apparently taking will serve the Cadets and YEA! best and is refreshing and reassuring to say the least

  12. Hopefully there will be some info about this discussed at the Cadet alumni holiday party this weekend. I think right now they are floating a trial balloon to get a feel on the interest in fielding such a one-and-done group.

  13. That group... the Holy Name Alumni... was a bit of a different animal, though. That group also did other performances in other years. This current one that is being formed... seems it's going to be on a grander scale.. or at least will try to be...LOL... and a true one-off.

  17. Thanks & I agree re resources. But there is no way the civil cases will proceed until the criminal is resolved (consider the OJ Simpson example). There are different rules of evidence, standards, etc. It is too easy for something from the civil creeping into the criminal that could cause a mistrial - criminal standards are higher (as they should be - criminal culpability leads to loss of liberty ; civil just loss of money).

  18. What I was saying is that I don't find the breakouts in the 2016 990 to be accurate, when one compares them to 2014 and 2015. The breakouts for 2016 that you reference in Part 3 of the form, have no descriptions. When I reference the 2014 and 2015 detail, it suggests that C2 only operated at a $110k loss in those years. I'd hate for someone to think that C2 was axed to save $110k -- because I'd expect there will be a bigger impact to the bottom line from the money generated by the liquidation of C2 assets.
    1 point
  19. Yeah, 2016 looks sloppy. The 2016 form was prepared by a different CPA firm (Kreisher Miller in Horsham) than in 2014 and 2015 (Buckno Lisicky in Allentown). If you look at 2014 and 2015, USBands runs at about 475k in the black, Cadets about 360k in the red, and C2 110k in the red. But I don't think you can say eliminating C2 only generates a 110k gain, because as others have mentioned, this doesn't consider revenue from selling off all the C2 assets.

  21. You guys are probably right that I need to brush up on the right way to read the 990's, but the point we're making here is not worth the argument; It's reasonable that the impact is a percentage or two. I think the bigger issue is how much YEA! will save by cutting C-2 out completely.
    1 point
  22. I don't think that's the correct way to interpret the 2016 990 Revenue: US Bands shows $2,294,191 Drum corps shows 1,489,619 Program sponsorship income 710,054 Performing ensembles 325,203 Total revenue (line 9) $4,819,067 Does the $325k for performing ensembles represent member tuition for all groups?

  23. From what I understand, this was more or less how it was the entire time they existed at YEA. A valuable experience for young people and an entertaining corps for audiences, for sure, but financially a loss for YEA each and every year. There have been rumblings about them being on the chopping block since year 1. I'm sad to see them go, but it really isn't much of a surprise, and considering YEA's current predicament, probably the smartest move.

  26. 2018 is just more and more sadness in this organization. The previous leadership really screwed up everything. I surely hope this organization can get through this because it would be a shame to never see The Cadets on the field again.

  28. Wasn't part of the rationale of establishing C-2 to have feeder corps that soaks up demand to march with YEA! I thought it was. So, does this move indicate that said demand to march at YEA! has diminished? If so, are there any prognostications of what that change might have been? From a business perspective, it would make sense to me to funnel all the demand into Cadets to put the supply/demand equation back in relative equilibrium. Is that a fair assessment, or part of one?

  29. I know at least for some people it was a step, Jim. Center Snare a couple of seasons ago did C2 before moving up to Cadets. Uncertain if his brother also went up to Cadets. Jeff I think can be more specific, but for percussion it seemed to be more successful in that way than Brass and Guard. C2's brass took a massive step up last season, and had they kept going, could have been a pretty tough customer in DCA in 2019.

  31. The big boogie man is no longer part of YEA. Plus never read that DCA or any hotels had any problem with the corps. And they did bring in some new fans from the C(1) world based on what I saw. So far C2 has been a plus for DCA.
