  1. I've been away from DCP for most of the off-season. Two years ago at this time I was biting my nails worried about whether my kid was going to make a roster. Today, it was announced that he will be one of the 4 Drum Majors for the Cavaliers! Couldn't be prouder of the kid! And can't wait for the 2019 season! See you down the road!

  2. That is indeed my son, Davis! Couldn't be prouder of the kid! I'll miss hearing all that horn preparation, but honestly...now that he's been in college for a couple of years, I wasn't hearing that much of it anymore anyway. 2019 is going to be a special season for us. Cavies start in California and Davis is on the "hands" team. My wife and I are very excited!

  4. Handling exposures of offending persons due to their behaviors or actions publicly, must be handled with great care in these litigious times. We may not always like it, and feel it is not fair at times, but there are rights and legal processes and protection for all parties involved in any actions whether outright legal proceedings or potentially legal proceedings. I am certain when something is proven by facts and evidence of impropriety it will become public.

  5. Man I keep reading all these various threads and assume everyone wants what’s best and safe for the activity and the marching members But there is so much naivety, so many jumping to assumptions it is hard to take some of this as seriously as it deserves There are so many legal implications, employer liability concerns etc around these situations and most here seem entirely clueless about the possible liability and privacy rights it’s alarming generally speaking, terminations must be kept quiet generally speaking, if you are going to “announce” a reason for separation you better darn well have full proof evidence - such as multiple witnesses and or a conviction - otherwise you open yourself up to civil liability generally speaking, if you’re aware of possible criminal activity you report it to local law enforcement- you don’t post the news on DCP independent strong boards, an anonymous tip line, background checks, some structural changes (elimination of minors? Number and qualifications of tour chaperones, shortening touring, use of same sex sleeping and or buses, separate touring arrangements for minors etc) is the way forward - most of these are being implemented or considered as we speak as far as Dan - I would support his departure, for all we know that’s under consideration as well. For no other reason than a fresh start and fresh set of eyes

  6. I just got around to reading this. It was great working with you, Landry. You're a kind, hardworking young man with a big heart.

  7. You post in a public forum that you want an explination, claiming that he is just a guy who ran a drum corps (a character defense), post a question asking why the attention, conveniently seem to want us to disregard all of the postings in another thread, then say you do not want an answer or stir the pot. It does not work that way in an open forum environment. You do not get the ability to say what you want then try to prevent others from responding with a cutesy remark! So here goes: Even if, again even if all action was consensual, this would include the defense set forth by Cosby, no man of integrity, honor, and ethical character would take advantage of a woman's vulnerability to turn the encounter sexual, would place a women in compromising situations, would place his hand on the leg of a woman with sexual intent in a restaurant, Period. And whomever defends that behavior (see other threads) to me lacks the same honor, integrity, and ethical character.

  9. Please refrain from personal attacks and comments about posters. I cleaned up a bunch of posts that were veering in that direction.

  10. Actually Ma'am, Terri was suggesting that to me and had nothing to with ruining anything fun (at least as I re-read the thread.) I think if you'll take a few moments to re-read the progression of that thread leading up to your statement, you'll find the error or misunderstanding (or whatever you choose to call it,) rather quickly. I appreciate some of your interpretation of events, but if you're not reading what was said, then you're only reading half the story, which you've stated your vehemenant opposition to. If we're going to play the game, the rules apply to everyone.

  12. I predict we will all once again be awed by the quality of performance of the MM's and the creativity of music and visual designers. We will temporarily forget about how so much has changed. Then as the sun sets every day, and the season comes to a close, we will return to the critiquing and bellyaching about how our team was screwed or didn't get credit and this one didn't play and this one didn't march and so on. I further predict that because of all the wrongdoing we have been reading and hearing about, there will be more eyes on all groups and all MM's will be better cared for and much safer. And god help any group who doesn't; step up in that regard. You are being watched. Placement predictions later when we get to the Detroit show and ST's are done.

  13. Please list some of your most favorite/memorable drill moments from shows in the past. Mine is watching Cadets’ closer in 2008 which I believe to be the most physically demanding and visually appealing moment in DCI history. Cavaliers 2002 also had many memorable moments. Others?

  15. Maybe there should be a “Music Corps Should Not Do Thread.” If so, this would be perfect for that category. Just got back from a local restaurant familiar to many in Massachusetts, especially 27th Alums, Kelly’s Roast Beef. I wasn’t in the Revere location, but I was in the mood for some fried clams. A family was sitting in a booth behind me, and they had a device that was playing “Baby Shark” over and over. A boy in the family, probably four or so, found a paper towel roll, pretended it was a trumpet, and marched around pretending he was playing “Baby Shark” on a trumpet. Maybe he has a future in drum corps, but he picked the wrong audition piece. And as anyone knows who has heard this ditty, it’s hard to get it out of your head! Thought I’d share my misery with you.

  20. I know what you mean.... the thing is, I know of School District Superintendents supposedly fired for sheer and utter incompetence yet had to be bought out. One is a cautionary case study on the PSSBA website or was last I looked. Worked for him and he was indeed horrid, inept, and everything short of touching anyone arguably more inept than GH in every way possible in running things. Still got a quarter million plus.

  21. Congrats to your son and the entire family!

  22. One is merely aesthetics, bad haircut; and Lord knows GH has had some awful ones! But the other is physical, a hand touching leg in a prvocative manner (which actually and directly relates to the larger point of potentioal sexual harassment). Thus to connect them both as being distractions to the larger picture is an equivocation.

  23. The more things change, the more they stay the same. (French proverb) What goes around, comes around. (American proverb) Commercial sponsorship flags carried by the guard were in the activity in the '50's, '60's, '70's but not carried in Legion or VFW contests who allowed only veteran logos; an exception was made for the Vatican flag some CYO corps carried, but it had to be handled as the flag of a foreign government. MAA circuit under Joe Catapano and John Rowan tried to adhere to Am. Legion rules so that they could be recognized as Am. Leg. judges ocean to ocean. It was not uncommon for corps in the Greater New York area to use sponsor flags as parade and practice flags, most often from the local gas station chains some who even donated them. Babylon Islanders were sponsored by the local 7-UP bottling company, wore green with orange, and had 7-Up flags (white with green/orange logo.) NJ had the senior Ballentine Brewers; Midwest had Hamm (Brewery) Indians from St. Paul, MN.; each of these corps marched with the beer label logos on bass drum heads and flags. Check the "rugs" (silks) of the very first DCI champion, the Anaheim Kingsmen who marched various sponsor flags on the field as part of their legendary Whitewater win routine, not just in the honor guard. As the Good Book says, there is little new under the sun.

  25. Had you been around awhile back you would understand why DCI refocused on the product and how much better off they are today because of it. As far as the geniuses at NASCAR, I would let them keep working their "magic" over there and not in my sandbox.

  27. I don't disagree George. It's a slippery slope and to your point, yes, direct terminations generally have to be kept quiet. However, general accounts of actions taken to improve the environment can be shared openly so that people see that change is being implemented. I can't technically say "We terminated employee x for attendance" in a public setting. That's between employer and employee. But I can say "We (insert company) terminated x number / percentage of employees for attendance and here is what we are doing moving forward to improve, change culture etc." But I do absolutely get where you're coming from. And I think we could probably all agree that there has to be a balance of transparency and anonymity and what that formula is can be a difficult nut to crack.

  29. All of them, really, but if I had to choose, I’d have to say Sky Ryders. I’m biased, of course, as that’s where I marched my first season in DCI, in ‘91. I thought we had a pretty fun and entertaining story-telling show that year, which was what the corps was so well known for.

  32. the key is they aren't landing elsewhere. I know someone who could make a case against someone, and just doesn't want to go back there personally. They made it known enough to get that person out of the game, and that was enough for them

  33. in some cases, as it has been told to me, there were enough rumors, even if no one came forward, that the wise choice was to slip into the darkness. And I think they know in the world today, coming back and trying to get back in is only going to make life hell. Some people may not want to come forward because they've just moved on in life and don't want to go back and relive those feelings all over again.

  35. If Hop would shut up, I’m pretty sure the adverse reaction to his narcissism would die down. He brings this on himself. As always. Since he will NEVER again be involved DCI, no matter the outcome of a trial, the sooner he goes away the better.

  40. You can’t go wrong with Brubaker. I love his ending to ‘91 Cavaliers. Sacktig’s ‘09 WSS ballad was money. The ‘00 diamond cutter is fun. I liked Crown’s 3D drill in ‘13. BD’s battery racing around the rack in ‘03 was fun. Z-pull!

  41. So to summarize: Hopkins is really sorry for how he’s treated people. He let his singular drive for Cadets cloud his judgement about how to treat people and that explains his past boorish behavior. But that’s all in the past and he’s changed. And you can read about this in his latest writing. The one that says this is all an orchestrated smear. You see, that’s how people show true remorse. By calling it all an orchestrated smear. /s

  42. Maybe those instructors should consider that there are waaaaaaaaaaay more corps members who are injured because of excessively intense rehearsals, and being expected to tough it out when there is an abnormal pain that needs to be addressed, than there are because of unaware field judges.
