  1. " Embracing all cultures ................ " I find this to be a rather profound gesture, coming as it does from a prominent African-American drum corps personality, honoring the diversity that has traditionally characterized the activity. Reading the NY Times tribute to Hal Blaine, the great session drummer who recently passed, reveals that he was a Jewish kid who learned to play in a Catholic parish corps in Hartford. Maybe that explains how he could rock the Beach Boys recordings and the Ronettes sessions. We can rightly point to Drum Corps as one thing our society actually got right. Happy St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy the parades. Francis Timothy Patrick Dorritie

  2. Stu, What's your end game here? To high jack an otherwise pleasant topic? Look, I've marched with and worked with most of the women who have been affected by the situation. It's now in the hands of the courts. For you to come here and troll this thread is stupid. You offered no new information, no insight, just your narrow opinion on how we should feel about past Cadet corps. I'm asking the moderators to consider taking Stu's comments from this thread and placing them on the threads that deal with his concerns. I've worn the Maroon and Gold, I've worked for, volunteered and given thousands of hours of blood, sweat, and tears to the Cadets. I have very strong feelings about the events that lead up to the change of directors. There are many Topics and post about that. This thread is not the place.

  3. I remember having cable in the ‘70’s when I still lived at home with my folks. My Dad #####ed about it costing $8.95 a month. He’d flip his cookies if he saw the tab now.

  4. Well I love “Danny Boy,” I still miss 27th, and wish 27th had the opportunity to perform it for 27 years. Sadly they only had 19 competitive seasons. Happy St. Patrick’s to everyone and as my Great Uncle Bartley, a proud native of Donegal used to say “May you be in Heaven a half an hour before the devil knows your dead.” Truthfully while I had an Uncle Bartley from Donegal, I don’t think he ever said that, but Happy St. Patrick’s Day anyway.

  6. 10. 1998 Stonehenge- I never really liked this show for some strange reason. I remember during the 1998 season saying The Cadets will probably win because of content and execution but I didn't like it then. Because of this thread, I watched it again and again. ( about 5 times straight) Wow! what a GREAT show! It took 20 years but, I came around. 11. 2006 Volume 2: Through the Looking Glass- I picked this show because of what it brought to drum corps. I remember the critics/trolls on Drum Corps Planet and REC.ARTS. mercilessly ripping this show. I remember saying " In a few years your corps will be doing the same thing" It took more than a few years but as you look back on that show you see the impact they made on today's drum corps. As I look back this was probably one of the Cadets most talented corps but that show was a bear to handle. I was in charge of props that year. whoa! 12. 1982 * Rocky Point Holiday * Cuban Overture * Concerto in F- For personal reasons, I add this show. I have a few stories: For as long as I can remember, before every play I performed in elementary school, every boxing and jujitsu match, every marching band and drum corps, I would take a deep breath, hold it as long as I could, Release, Perform. Prelims morning in Montreal was exceptionally hot. The Cadets back then wore wool uniforms with lined insulated jackets. Anyway, I took a deep breath, held it, and blacked out. I woke up in Concerto in F with my horn down everybody else's horn was up. I marched most of the show on muscle memory. The Next night I remember it being exceptional cold, I remember the snow flurries during "warm-ups" I remember the corps being ON. I remember me being ON. I could hear everything around me, and see the spacing between me and the next person in every set. I was so in tune with the show and everything around me. I remember during the final company front in Gershwins Concerto in F being overcome with emotion and tears streaming down my face and the EMT people asking if I was OK as the corps marched off the field. WOW! Honorable Mentions: 2012 12.25- I hate Christmas, I hate Christmas music. I love this show. Note: The slow march segment in the opener, The brass is marching slowly with some fancy lower body movement on the left side of the field. On the right side, the percussion is playing and marching crazy drill like it's 1993. What an awesome effect! And that kaleidoscopic Sactig Ending. I hate Christmas music. I love this show! 2018 Boston Crusaders- Just Kidding. I love that show. Great Organization, awesome people. 2017 The Faithful, The Fallen, The Forgiven- I absolutely love what The Cadets Tried to do with this show. The costuming and props were on point. I loved the arrangements. I only wish there was a little Angels and Demons action in the Fallen section. I guess they never got my email. 2018 The Unity Project- First. When I saw the uniforms on Facebook I made fun of the design. ( I was wrong, It worked on the field and lot's of people love it.) When I first saw the corps in Akron, Ohio, I thought "Oh My God The Cadets are Awful This Year" I have never said that ever since I first saw them one June day in New Jersey back in 75. My friend Irving ( Fan of the Arts) Told me how the corps was trying to find the right balance of hard work and rest ( something rare in Cadetland) and by Atlanta, I could see the clarity in the show. The hard work was paying off. I remember during finals as the mellophones did that familiar run and the Z-Pull started to unravel, my heart filled as the young man in the traditional Cadet uniform appeared, I stood there clapping with tears in my eyes and what had been oblivious to me all season I heard loud and clear. " Ladies and Gentlemen, Under the direction of Scott Litzenburg, The Cadets!" A new era has Begun. Oh, and 1985 because it was F****** Awesome!

  11. " A dramatic fall " ? ... predicted by " a lot of posters " ? Not really... not on DCP, anyway. The average predictions for Crown in 2017 and 2018 was in medal territory. We know this pretty much for certain, as the DCP prediction threads for 2017 and 2018 ( preseason ) are still up even now on DCP for verification of Crown's overall placement prediction collective average by DCP'ers.. ...which as the cumulative average by DCP'ers tended ultimately to fall pretty much in line with their eventual finish for the most part each season of 2017, 2018 too.

  12. My parents only had antenna, no cable. In North Jersey growing up, we had New York channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. 13 was PBS. 5, 9 and 11 were NY local and 2, 4, 7 were CBS/NBC and ABC national. When they moved to the Jersey shore in 71, they got an antenna that had a motor to point it at North Hersey and Philly, so we had 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

  13. Six blocks you say. Maybe you can approach them and work out a deal that allows use of their driveway for parking during the Fri./Sat. shows in early August for your closest DCP friends.

  14. 1981 moved in my first place and had something like that. 1970 at the old house in town it was turn the vhs dial for choice of 12. And one was that local access which was a camera panning back and forth to a wall of a clock, temperature gauge, humidity, etc.... Other than that it was local stations and couple of independent Philly stations.... whoop de doo. and Terri yeah we resemble that remark.

  15. We had cable starting in 1981. It had 20 channels and was installed with a plastic box that had 10 black push-buttons and an a/b toggle switch; all analog, no remote.

  16. Lol all 12 channels (2-13) and one had to be for community access ca 1970. Then move to mountain and no cable so big antenna with rotor so could turn the antenna as needed. Did better with the freaking antenna as got Philly, Baltimore and a DC VHS channels. And to answer Stu, in Harrisburg area could buy a box to get extra 10 or so channels in very early 80s. Couple of regular stations plus those new CNN and ESPN ones. HBO and Prism (Philly sports) were big add on. and anyone who know what vhs means is officially old. As for sponsorship who/what is responsible for digging up sponsor bucks?

  17. The timeline is generic. While cable did appear in the 70's, it started in the larger metro areas an was not wide spread. I put it in the 80's because it became more and more common in smaller towns and communities across the nation. This breakdown was nothing more than a response to what happend to cause viewership numbers to go down for PBS.

  18. No kidding. I use a Kodi box mostly and luckily have a free hulu subscription. I am trying the Youtube TV thing right now and it's kinda, sorta ok. I think that DCI could do a better job of using Digital Media, but having butts in seats is the thing I would like to see change in the immediate future. Maybe that's just me though. I'm not so naive as to believe that we're going to see a 70K seat stadium packed to the rafters, but selling 10K more seats at a few dollars cheaper probably makes sense in the long run.

  19. Let’s just say I have less trust than most people I know.... except for maybe a sister who worked banking and saw some wild crap there lol. Think she checks her bank account online about 2-3 times a week and she’s more concerned about screw ups. On topic think I’d get a prepaid debit card for stadium use. That way you can limit possible losses better.

  23. Ahhhh....that's probably exactly right. I'm betting it WAS Thanksgiving. We would all listen to dad curse about how much he hated cooking for 3 hours (he was a food services manager and a chef...go figure,) and then sit down and watch the broadcast. I guess 30+ years fades the memory a bit LOL.

  24. You know, you bring up a very good underlying possibility here Jim. As I remember (that's a scary proposition since I can't find my shop keys most days,) the PBS broadcast was probably a couple of weeks behind actual finals night. We had no internet to speak of so you either went to shows, or waited anxiously for the latest copy of Drum Corps World to show up on your band directors desk so you could steal it and find out what was going on. I'm not saying the internet destroyed the connection between DCI and PBS, but when I can catch just about any corps at any show on some sort of live stream and watch the video tomorrow in HD on Youtube...I no longer have to wait with bated breath anymore. I really do miss DCI on PBS

  25. And that being the case, your point of having the right people in place to make the correct pitch comes into an even starker focus. It truly does make we wonder how bad the pitch could possibly be. Just looking at a quick hit list of their sponsorship, I see a paintball team, a ballet dancer, a rap artist and some surfers. I cannot for ONE SECOND believe that marching arts are more niche than paintball and surfing. My only thought would be that the pitch must truly be something like "So, like....It's like marching band...but it's better and cooler. We needs monies...Thanks, ❤️ DCI." and it's possibly written in crayon on a napkin.

  29. Yeah, this is exactly what I'm afraid of. Its so easy in this day and age to just open accounts in other people's name or to skim credit cards (a big problem where I'm at right now) at a local gas station. It really bothers me sometimes.

  34. Less worry of keeping all those transactions tracked too unless you check on line day by day. Went our one night and had a phone call from credit card company when we got home. Wondered if I had charged $7000 for two tickets to other side of the world two hours ago. Called right back to say hell no cancel that charge then had to clean my pants if you get my drift. Next day signed the legal paperwork and had the card cancelled. What made me a target was I had good credit so company kept upping my limit. Now have a low limit and charge only what I have to.

  39. I ranked every Cadets finalist show from 1975 (their first DCI finals) up to last season on my Facebook page. I’m sure some of you would either laugh ot argue with me. I’ve seen every Cadets corps live, at least once, every year from 1972 on.

  40. I remember the 1984 clinic where George Zingali discussed the show at length with us. He said that it was a very open and deeply collaborative effort between Jim Prime, Jr., Thom Hannum, and himself. Never heard the Director at that time mentioned as a major design/process contributor to the program. Period. I hope that helps you in regards to your feelings, Stu. It certainly helps with mine.

  42. This is always a fun day. Twin Valley H.S. is a terrific venue, and the event is a nice way to catch up with friends after the long winter. And to see the defending DCA champions in action. I an honored to once again be the emcee for the show. Heck, it's the only "drum corps show" gig on my schedule this year... so if you want to throw stuff at me, here's your chance!!! Please join us in Elverson on May 11!!!

  44. I listened to LotHype's 8 to 5 podcast. Pretty hard to listen to. They should maybe take some cues from other podcast and make sure 1) their thoughts are in order before they record so they aren't saying ummm and like constantly and 2) the people talking have at least a sliver of personality. Did about 10 minutes of Drunk Corps but found it really offensive.

  45. I've listened to Drunk corps and drumcorps af, and honestly, they are both really bad. I like drumcorps so current podcast options are pretty bad. Some of the marching roundtable shows are okay but there's not many other good options out there. The drunk corps guys had no idea who Michael Gaines is and the drumcorps af guys seemed like they had no idea what Chuck Naffier has been doing since 1999. I'll listen to both as there are not any good options out there but they are both pretty bad. They frequently get shows information wrong and neither have a very good grasp on older 70's/80's/90's drumcorps. Z

  46. Dean Westman has been on the creative staff of several corps (Troopers, Cadets) before moving to Bloo. But what is it at Bluecoats that have allowed his ideas to grow so amazingly? (Whatever you think it is, keep it up. The last few years have been outstanding.)
