  1. My corps does not have someone that can do backflips. Ergo, we will likely not do backflips this year. So no, I don't really see it as that big of a deal. Mike

  2. The problem is probably as basic as; do the people there (PR org) even understand how the show they are getting to perform is at BEST a lower scoring BOA show? Let that sink in. The kids/young adults are not the problem. The staff is not getting it done AND they haven't had a product to really get excited about. Whomever is selling these show designs needs to take up being a car salesman because they can sell.....

  3. Not sure how you wound your way to the above comparisons from the earlier discussion, but for now...here goes... 'Equal value' is determined by what and how the judges evaluate performances/shows, a totally subjective concept, as has always been the case. They. use the criteria and scoring methodologies decided by the corps themselves at winter meetings. If adjudication is "skewed", it is skewed to determine ranking and ratings based on the desires of the corps. Does the show with complex drill/body sculpture align itself with the judging criteria to achieve a maximum score? Or would it be missing some of the elements contained in the various adjudication standards? Talking in generalities about show designs is really impossible. Ditto the G vs Bb horns comparison. Bb horns are here to stay, so the difference in sonority and timbre of a G horn section might be an issue with the evaluation. Again, talking generalities and what-ifs in a vacuum is impossible.

  4. How do you know that a let's say an18.4 at that show from the GE or Field Vis judge would not have been a 18.7 had they used the props? YOU DON'T. YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE. The poster that said they didn't lower the score is also clueless. Lower it from what? The night before? That was a different contest in a different environment that could have had other issues both good and bad to contribute to the score they got that specific night.

  5. But you are speaking of a specific contest where a corps used their props in an alternate and not intended way due to atmospheric conditions. Someone stated that scores didn't change. I'm making the point that you have ZERO clue if in fact the scores at that contest on that day in that stadium during that unique performance would or would not have been higher had they been able to use their props. So my statement that you have no clue is one of fact.

  6. This sounds awesome. I am picturing a wild drum feature leading into Danny Boy right when the dry-ice fog is released.

  7. Who says that the score would not have been higher if they had used the props on that day in that contest? This whole argument is stupid because it presumes something (judge intent with score in that specific contest on that specific day) that no one here has one clue about.

  8. I am shocked... shocked... that a show outcome could be pre-determined in the days of the AL and VFW.

  9. The poster was correct. We (including me for responding) have gone far away from the intent of the OP in the thread. It is OK to wander a bit, but we do need to bring it back to dangerous designs, not G/Bb and other irrelevant topics. You can start a new thread if you want. Feel free.

  12. Your wording was fine. You can be better and not place higher. Those things that separate 5 from 4 are far more difficult to attain than the things that separate 5 from 10.

  17. I would like to see some marching demand rather than climbing to ever higher props to stand still and play runs. It's been so long since I have been impressed by drill move/playing..possibly Crown out of this world where they are playing 32nd note runs AND marching.

  19. My fear for the Regiment is they are on a downward trajectory that may ultimately take them out of the top 12. There have been years in the past when they placed much lower than expected but immediately bounced back. However, since 2008 they have placed in the top 3 just once and since that year (2012) they have dropped to 11th place in 6 years. With recent finalists The Academy & a resurgent Spirit knocking on the top 12 door not to mention The Mandarins mixing it with the big boys, they are in real danger of saying goodbye on the Friday night. One sincerely hopes not but...

  20. Bd 1st reinvention with a fresh show Scv 2nd a worthy follow up to babylon but not quite Cc 3rd having a better year in show design Bc 4th or 5th will produce an awesome show that will be loved, but competition very strong Boston 4th or 5th a great push to battle for 4th in a continuous rise but competition very strong. Cavalier 6th Will be on the hunt to climb but not quite yet, but keeping things consistent.

  22. Bingo. Collaboration is paramount these days. Music should be done before drill, and drill should be done before music. Designers need to spend a lot of time planning every aspect of a program before anyone puts pen to paper. The Artistic Director or whomever is in charge of pulling all elements together in a cohesive sensible program and vision should listen to all input, offer their own, get full team buy-in then start designing the program as a single entity. Drill coming first and hoping music be made to fit the big visuals, would be a disaster.

  23. Sorry, but that’s an awful excuse for crappy performance. I’ve heard plenty of corps in recent years create emotionally stimulating performances, even with today’s style. Sorry that PR hasn’t lived up in recent years on their classics, but it’s not just design, it’s performance as well. They don’t have the talent they did in the past, coupled with #### arrangements. For the love of god though, your attempt to justify how much they’ve slipped, based on modern DCI arranging style is an absurd reach.

  25. If SCV's design team decides to follow up Babylon with a rehash of POTO, they should be drummed out of the activity. I'm not even joking.

  26. Well... I'm not wearing a Phantom t-shirt, but that '05 show is also a favorite of mine!!! LOL In particular, the performer portraying the Gene Kelly character did a great job, IMO.
