  1. We see 777 that your disdain for Boston is still in place, even though no corps has competed in 2019 yet.

  2. I’m seeing more similarities to Cadets and Cavies rises rather than Madison. You have to assemble the staff to attract the talent and get the results. Staff moves so much today, very few corps have “their staff” for long periods of time. Boston Crusaders also worked to build a foundation for success prior to attracting the new staff. I don’t think you’re going to see a collapse too soon.

  3. Though that Don Ellis book from 1993 is arguably the best brass book to ever hit the field in DCI. They played pretty #### well too!

  5. I loved their ‘85 show, especially the ELP. I just about wore out that album. I think they won brass that year, too.

  6. Let's see if SCV has what it takes to medal in 2019. Last four corps to beat BD........PR/Cadets/Crown/Coats didn't even medal the following year, while BD not only won the following season, they went undefeated each of those years. SCV certainly has the talent, drive and motivation to get the job done, but so did those four corps preceding them. It's one thing to get to the top of the mountain, whole different story staying there.

  7. My local junior corps had its own buses from about 1973 on... we were fortunate to have a good crew of volunteers who took care of those vehicles. I don't remember any major problems. Of course, we also didn't do any nationwide touring. Trips to New England, Ohio, and Michigan... that was about it. The rest, local NJ/PA/NY stuff. So, to sum up... our corps pretty much sucked some years, but at least we had good transportation!!!

  9. well you leave out a huge factor....if those staffs weren't happy, why should they stay? and trust me, folks that went to Boston were NOT happy where they were.

  10. I've heard some "buzz" about a corps using these props this year.

  11. This has to be one of the quietest retirements of a drum corps legend that I can remember. Hands down, one of the best ever at his craft for so many years.

  12. Crown can be consistently number one in brass, as long as BD is consistently world champs.

  14. Oh man that 93 book........amazing!!! But i still think BDs 1991 brass is the most powerful hornline ever assembled. But yes............give me some Don Ellis any day of the week!

  15. Sometimes, a group pushes hard, and because they work and try so hard, just get tired and need a bit of time to refresh that's my guess. Just happens. I think we've all had that experience.

  16. Updated March predictions based mostly on feeling as well as what I’ve about camps this month. 1/2. Bluecoats 1/2. Blue Devils 3. Carolina Crown The Blue Devils, in my opinion, had an off year last year. They weren’t as clean nor did their sound inspire me as much as it usually does. It’s because of this that I’m expecting a very strong BD this year. I’ve heard Bluecoats is having a very good preseason, specifically about the talent level. I have a very good feeling about them. As far as Crown, I’ve been told mixed things. It’ll depend on their design. Third is just a gut feeling. ————————————————— 4/5. Santa Clara Vanguard 5/4. Boston Crusaders Vanguard could certainly be top three again, but history tells me that when a corps wins a championship after a long period of not winning, they slip in placement. Boston is on the rise, but breaking into the top three is harder than climbing to where they are now. I think it’ll be one or two more years until they do. —————————————————- 6/7/8. The Cavaliers 6/7/8. The Cadets 6/7/8. Blue Stars I heard good things about Blue Stars this year. I don’t see these three corps falling out of or rising above 6/7/8. The Cavaliers could, but their show designs and brass line will need to improve. Kevin LeBouf could make a big difference. —————————————————- 9/10. Blue Knights 9/10. Crossmen Total guesswork. ————————————————— 11/12. Phantom Regiment 11/12. Madison Scouts (maybe Mandarins) Also total guesswork. I hope to one day see Phantom Regiment thrive again.

  18. Maybe not long bus rides; but when I was involved in drum corps it would have been typical bus pushes! 😕

  19. yes, DCI culture has changed in many aspects and issues compared to past DCI seasons on and off the field. New blood is addressing those changes almost everywhere.

  20. In no particular order, except for the first... 1) 1997- The definition of getting the crowd on their feet. The rest... 1992- First year I watched drum corps, so I have to include it. 1975- A great show 1999- Lit the stadium on fire on finals night 1995- Those mellos at the beginning of the closer...what all mellos should aspire to 1988- Yes, by far the best Malaguena EVER!!!! 1996- Just pure fun 2010- Back in finals

  22. I’m just happy to see some DCA chatter on here! Thank you, Jeff. I’m someone who refuses to do Facebook, Twitter, and all the others. So, I probably miss a lot. DCP for me all the way. This, and private conversations, of course. As to this subject, I have heard good things about the Bucs from a few people who have attended their practices. I am told they did have a high turnout of brass and percussion players. One of the practices showed 65 brass players with several absentees. Rumored about a 10 brass candidates from Cadets2. Unknown former Cadets2 percussion candidates. No idea about Guard, nor numbers who will actually take the field in each group. Also haven’t heard which specific music titles are being played. Not surprised there were interested Cadets2 people. At times, Cadets2 held their own practices within a 20 mile radius of Reading, so not much of a change in distance in that. At this point, all I will predict is a Top 5 finish. Sorry. Best wishes to all.

  26. A lot of what if's there that were incredibly unfortunate. I have a hunch the Cabs would have benefitted greatly from their continued work with him. They appreciated him, and vice versa. He really understood the Cabs and gave them a great voice.
