  1. DCI has ended the Cadets probationary status! Hopefully, the Cadets can now put this terrible mess behind them and continue to build another championship drum corps. I applaud the current Cadets management team for the way they handled this tough situation.

  4. This is a good thing, and for too many years one individual had more control/power in the organization, and parent organization, without the proper oversight that should have been in place. I think going forward, yes it will always be an unfortunate part of their past, but it is not the drum corps, but rather the aforementioned individual that is the one who is the one that sullied the name.

  8. What was that series about drum corps in 2016? I can’t remember the name. They asked some the Cadets members about their show Awakening/Statues Awakening/Awakening again ...they tried but I don’t think that they even knew what it was about. I know I didn’t.

  18. Was looking over staff for a few corps and started to laugh.... In our best year (1976) we had three percussion staff (one with the corps all the time and the other two would pop in once in a while). One brass person/arranger who came in periodically while one or two of us would warm up the line during summer and DM would run rehearsals. One guard instructor and one of the girls in rifle line would be in charge of them. Our drill person would pop in once in a while too. When they were all there it would be less than 5 people. Today 5 people would be the tenor techs LOL. How big was your staff?

  23. I disagree — corps are going to use ideas that have been used before. SCV performed a show this past summer about an inability to communicate after Cadets announced (and didn't perform, but I'd assume SCV had at least a framework of the show concept if not more before The Conversation was scrapped) a show about the same thing for the same year... but the design was quite original anyway. Cadets' 2002 show, although inspired by their 1995 show, was an original and distinct design. BD 2012 was another abstract, artsy show just 4 years after Constantly Risking Absurdity, but many people think it's one of the best designs ever. Phantom's show design may not meet that standard, but it won't be because it's a repeated show theme — it'll just be because Phantom's design isn't at an incredibly high level right now.

  34. The issue with hiring alumni design talent IMHO, is that they seem tend to design shows "I wish we would have marched when I was a member." That doesn't seem to be a good way to figure out show design. You can't do a "top hits of Phantom Regiment 1990-2015" show and expect it to fly. Leave that kind of thing for alumni corps.

  35. I do think money is a big part of the problem. To attract and retain top-tier staff you have to be able to pay them. Both staff payroll costs and costs of running corps have ballooned since the 80s. We saw a lot of corps fold in the 80s because of the problem of paying staff being their means and then folding. It's definitely a problem. That being said, as someone who is not in the least qualified for any staff person on Regiment, even I would have had the sense to say, "Eh, I'm not so sure about that." I just don't get it. It's baffling. It's even worse at Madison. If I was in charge and one of my designers brought that prop idea to me, I would have laughed thinking they were joking. When they replied it wasn't a joke I would have fired them. The narration was terrible too, as was the usage of the female player. What a waste of her talents. Honestly, I don't know how these designers at Madison and Regiment actually have jobs. I mean, based on what I've read on here, most of us (if not all) at least know what NOT to do.

  36. You're saying exactly what a lot of people have been saying and thinking for a long time. And i don't buy the monetary problem. I would bet if someone mounted a campaign to raise funds to be used solely for affording top notch staff the money would flood in. There are too many people who love PR and want to see it succeed. And secondly, the habit of hiring alumni is and has never proven to be very successful. It's a crutch that comes with many problems. IMVHO, PR needs to clean house.

  39. To me .....this comes off as the nerd trying too hard to hang out with the cool kids. Better to acknowledge a nameless volunteer who has given so much more of themself than someone who was an actor in a tv show with a cult following 50 years ago, who also picked up a horn once or did a year in a corps when he/she was 17.. But that’s just me I guess.

  40. My local-circuit junior corps, we had a percussion instructor, sometimes two, depending on the year. Also one guard captain/instructor. Our director was seriously old school. He ran the horn line, and wrote, taught, and cleaned the drill. He didn't write the music, and occasionally brought in a person or two to help work the horn line. Occasionally. LOL. He was basically a one-man show. DCA's Sunrisers, where I ended up after junior corps... we had three, maybe four, brass staffers.... including the arranger... at any given time. Percussion... a caption head/arranger (Dennis DeLucia the years I was there) plus a few in-house folks. Visual... a caption head/arranger... plus a few teachers. Color guard... one or two teachers/arrangers, depending on the year.

  44. For the curious, some general observations from the exhibition: The music is drawn from several different art forms (pop, film, etc.) with the eclectic melodies cleverly weaving together into fantastic builds... recognizable, memorable, and musical. Contrasting with the last two years, it is possible we'll hear more soft passages interspersed with the hard charging moments, providing more variety to the sound. As someone else mentioned, brass is not tight, but it's appropriate for an ensemble in April, particularly with a book this tough. It was a long weekend of playing, and by Sunday the tone sometimes got edgy in the trumpet section... though nothing more concerning than "final exam chops". They made up for it by demonstrating expert execution of some double-tongued decrescendo passages. Very sweet stuff. Praying that these moments don't get lost in the amplification. This is a very talented line with an ambitious book. Endurance will be key to delivering on the field. Get ready to hear plenty of complex articulations -- all sections, all levels -- that go well beyond top-12's seemingly compulsory chromatic runs. There will be MELODY while the valves fly! They will have tongues like machine guns by July. The rhythms and meter signatures are varied and interesting. It will be fun to see what the drill/movement people create to accompany them. The percussion section stands out due to their age and performance maturity. Even a layman can tell they're darn good.. and ready to take on this summer's challenges. The percussion breaks seem better integrated into the overall musical flow than in the past (either that, or they're not yet in the show). Didn't get to see the guard... no doubt there were tough membership decisions in progress.
