  3. The money was raised in part by other students playing music on street corners and intersections over the past few months. Nice work, young folks.

  4. https://www.theday.com/nationworld-news/20190512/50-trombones-given-out-to-honor-slain-parkland-student As many know, MSD marching band has contributed much to DCI/WGI ranks of mms and faculty. April Gilligan Martinez is one notable on that MSD faculty. Where will these kids become mms in the future, who knows?

  8. Nope, I haven't either. I had to Google Arya Stark to know who it was.

  9. I wonder how many realized that the 27th Lancers corps was modeled after a fictional British regiment from the film "Charge of the Light Brigade". The real regiment from the actual battle was the 17th lancers.

  11. In May, every show description is an over reach. Until you see it, and usually not until finals when fully fleshed out, cleaned, tweaked, refined, new ending just for the last 2 weeks put on, etc etc, it's all high sounding blather, regardless of the corps. So reading too much into anything said in May is folly.

  18. My junior corps lost to the 21st Lancers at the World Open Class B (which was class A everywhere else) prelims in 1975. Then again, my corps lost to pretty much everyone at that prelims show. Holy mackerel, were we godawful that day. LOL. Would that well-known personality be George Zingali?

  19. There was also a 21st. Lancers from Norwood, MA which is where a well known drum and bugle corps personality got his start. DCX listed them as having a score in 1966 which would predate 27th. I can’t recall any controversy with names being so close.

  21. Don't know about 'horrible', but extremely problematic. New fans have no clue what it was all about and likely not care... and the old fans would have certain expectations that would likely not be met. The results sure could be horrible, but it would be at the least exceedingly difficult.

  22. Anything can be twisted into a partisan issue, as soon as politicians get involved with it. To answer the rest of your inquiry - since show themes are obligatory now, what better and more timely theme could there be than the empowerment of women? I would love to see any corps provide a focused and intelligent show around that concept. And if the Cadets were to be that corps, that could add auto-biographical significance to it all which would be poetic justice. Cadets 2019 could still be that corps, that show, that message... if refined and focused. As I said earlier, the show description felt like overreach to me. The reason is because after declaring the theme to be about women and power, the writeup lost focus on that topic about a quarter of the way in. And that loss of focus came in the form of words I (and others) recognize as popular political rhetoric of current American politics, left-leaning in every instance. Being politically ambidextrous myself, I prefer not to be pulled all the way to one side or the other. For me, it would all be good with just two refinements: 1. This show is about women. Remove the references to diversity of race, ethnicity, orientation, identity, age, etc. (And spare me the next straw man post - no, I do not support discrimination on any of those issues.) If Cadets want to do a race show in 2020, ethnicity in 2021, an age show timed to coincide with a rule change proposal on that topic, great. One theme at a time. 2. Having trouble reconciling the "glass ceiling" concept with the history of women in leadership going back centuries. I think it is too heavy a lift to explain that history in ten minutes. I would keep either the Queen or the glass ceiling, but not both in the same field program.

  23. You can purchase flip folders with a "clip" that helps hold the music in place. wwbw.com has them for many instruments. 24. Well Jeff... In the US corps activity, because of all of the reasons you've mentioned, we tend to memorize the charts for parade work. There tends to be a rather well, ghastly tendency for people with lyres to have bad posture and marching technique (they tend to march like Quasimodo from a lot of observations over the decades...)...... and have their heads in the music and not paying attention to good dress and cover in formations.

  25. Legal issues aside, I sure wouldn’t want to try and resurrect the 27th Lancers unless I was named Denise Bonfiglio. It’s just a horrible idea.

  31. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5CU8lz4LHI posted as a link because 1st a 403 error and then this message when trying to fix it: This comment can no longer be edited. It may have been moved or deleted, or too much time may have passed since it was posted for it to be edited. Hey it worked after logging out and then logging back in!! So I'm guessing the error has something to do with the DCP cookie data.

  32. I was much younger in 1987, but I remember being visibly upset when Phantom took 5th on Finals night. Should have been 3rd. I know they had a rough show that night. Years later I understood why, but I still didn't like it because that show was sooooo good. Love the musical arrangements. That alone was worth it,and that visual program and the uniform just sparkled.

Inferno Phantom Regiment 1989 New World Bluecoats 2016 and a tip of the hat to the most electric moment I've seen live: 1979 Troopers, prelims version.
