  1. Yeah. very much, not to mention the height it gives the members. i just hope this year they will stay on for most corps, or all. i prefer BD with it on.

  2. To me shako head gear or any head gear adds a visual element to a corp as a whole. I just don't like the new trend with members wearing nothing on the head.

  6. it cuts the glaring reflection from those bald-spots from the overagers and age-outs and high foreheads of the know-it-alls.

  7. Hey folks - having been at the meeting on said Saturday, I can only say that most of last year's membership issues continue..That being Brass numbers.. I have been away from active involvement due to a number of semi-serious health issues over the last 6 months - and after 40+ years of observation, Minnesota must not have any more brass players or converts that have an interest in the program, or would rather go out of town to march... I'm waiting to hear about their next situation decision, because we should already have 1/2 of the drill taught already.. Hoping to hear soon.. BTW - anyone who cares about the unit, past present or future - has a stake in MBI Pat

  11. Well in terms of the show........lol I'm excited, seems like a good mix of old and new, I think the secret to their success is finding a good balance between the two. I think doing retreads strayed too far into the old and last year maybe too far into the new (though there were some moments in there I liked, Snarky Puppy worked well for them). We shall see but seems like a good fit in terms of programming.

  12. Having sent tuition dollars to Madison and watched our son grow, mature, and perform the crap out of shows the last couple of years (before aging out) I can tell you I wish nothing but success for the new design team. If you thought it painful watching the shows the last couple of years try having your kid be one of the performers trying to make sense of the instruction given, the effort expended, and the lack of results (score-wise) earned. I saw a young man stare into the face of adversity and, instead of folding, grow artistically and do things in terms of playing, marching, and performing that weren't possible prior to getting with the Scouts. This is not an appeal to moral authority for my view of the upcoming season, because there is none for me any longer (if there ever was any). It is, instead, a fervent wish that this year's corps achieves the vision of the design team, gets rewarded with positive fan reaction/buzz, and keeps producing Men from Madison like our son.

  13. I don’t like to see any corps fold, though in light of some recent situations, I might alter that to say I don’t like to see any corps that does it’s best and provides a quality experience to marching members fold. A great deal also depends on the connection to the corps. I thought Suncoast Sound was a fine corps, but it was not top on my list and I viewed it more as a loss for drum corps and a respected competitor than as a personal loss. My feelings were different for corps I loved such as 27th, North Star, and Bridgemen. Many people mourned the loss of Star, others saw the departure as sour grapes over not winning in 1993. At one time when a corps folded, someone else took it’s place. That has not been the case for close to 40 years, perhaps more. I was watching a Glassmen video a few days ago. The show was good, not one of their more memorable shows, but it reminded me, when we lose a corps, it is not replaced.

  17. Count me among those that prefer headgear, although why (at least in this case with BD, and prolly others) does the headgear look SO big around their head? It truly looks like it would drop straight down over their face vs. being more snug/less likely to wobble or fall off...

  19. They don't stop the growls, though. Growling in drum corps should be banned.

  20. Headgear adds more depth and makes the corps look more finished and professional. Also headgear keeps you from focusing on faces and expressions.

  22. Their official show graphic is pretty cool as always. Lot's of symbolism. There's an element of comedy and tragedy, quite literally. Excited to see the full repertoire and see how it all ties together.

  23. I used it for the show I built this past year at the high school. Had only one person singing on the field to start the show. Ended the show with only one person on the field playing it. I have always loved this song and it has so many possibilities.

  24. That was kinda my point. The old YEA board was nothing unique. It was just like all the other BODs. Toothless. Cronies. Madison. Crossmen. All the same.

  29. If Madison were to ever get in the top 5 again or even win a championship there would always be someone there to criticize something. The young men and staff would do best to stay focused on the task at hand and to reach their desired goals whether it be praise or criticism. Just stay focused and even keel throughout the process no matter what.

  30. Great points. Any number of "Hello, WE'RE HERE!!!" moments in drum corps through the years. Cadets have had them, as you mentioned.... plus others, like Scouts' monster back-sideline opening hit in 1975...Spirit and their knock-a-wall-down openers circa 1979-80... Blue Devils' horn line just nailing their opening LOUD notes on the front sideline in 1996... and so forth. All of them memorable... all of them established a tone of "Hey... we are in the game, folks!!!" It would be cool for the Cadets to give us another great moment like these.

  31. From the calendar on YEA.org: ST begins Friday... Move in and Spring Training starts Friday - May 17th -- in Salem PA for the weekend Monday May 20th ST continues as the corps moves to Oxford, PA for 12 days through the end of May Cadets will then move on to Ada, OH for the remaining 20 days of ST June 18th Cadets will host a "community preview day" Cadets 2019 will make their competitive debut in Detroit MI at DCI's Premiere Event (also in theaters) The Tour Event in Theaters is a Fathom Event, starts at 8:30pm eastern time zone featuring The Cadets, Carolina Crown, Boston Crusaders, Blue Stars & Bluecoats - what a great line up! The next day is labeled as a "rehearsal day" in Youngstown, OH The following day (June 22nd) is the big Innovations in Brass show in North Canton, OH (available on FloMarching live stream) and features Phantom Regiment joining the fray >> Last year The Cadets were a bit behind at their first event, so it will be interesting to see how well-prepared the 2019 addition arrives on tour >> Will they debut with a smaller (or larger?) point gap with the corps ahead of them? Go Cadets!

  32. Please point out the “partisan politics” in Cadets’ show announcement. Is it the whole equality/empowerment thing? Since when are those considered partisan issues?

  33. Lol bring down that ego. I don't know you or anyone else from a can of paint. What makes you think I care how much you or anyone else enjoy it? As far as I'm concerned, we are all just the internet so I couldn't really care less whether or not you enjoy it. What I do know is I've had enough wasting my time typing replies to negative people who seem to get off on being cynics. You can have fun with all that.

  34. I FIGURED IT OUT! Using "The" and "...near" it has to be "The Sheriff is a (bell ringing)! What did he say? He said the Sheriff is NEAR!" THEY ARE DOING BLAZING SADDLES! Props will be the city of Rock Ridge and as the show goes on, they will move the city from Side 1 to Side 2 of the field.

  35. I'm a little surprised to hear Elvord speak so explicitly about a return to what Madison is all about. I know a lot of alumni and fans want that. But in context, it's sort of also saying: you know, not that stuff we've done the past couple of years. The plans are plenty okay with me. I'm just surprised to hear so open a dig at those past decisions.

  37. I got the inside scoop: it’s gonna be snippets of heavily mic’d unrecognizable songs muddled by thunderous goo, accompanied by lots of nonsensical props and dancing. With the word “blue” in there somewhere.
