  1. It's also interesting that for the very first time, the image of Waldo is neither red, white, nor black....but GOLD. hmm....

  2. BD are always " The Corps to beat " in any preseason talk. And it has virtually nothing to do with the show announcement, nor the list of music to be played. Lets face it, this Corps, which essentially is akin to DCI 's All Stars Marching Drum Corps, could announce this weekend that they will be playing Dionne Warwick's pop hits from the 60's or similar in their show, and we know theres a good chance they're going to win or medal with the music/ show. And best of success to them once again this season. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us.

  3. hype is hype, be it a show announcement, details from attending a camp or stopping by spring training, a sneak peak, a rumor heard from a rumor about a rumor on DCP..... and history shows with BD, like em or not, they walk the walk regardless of the talk.

  5. Your comments are in line with my own opinion that from those corps who have already announced their music selections, it would seem that the trend is toward memorable music or at least music which the audience might hum or imagine on the way home. Even the more "esoteric" pieces have melody lines which are pleasant, tempos which are energetic and stirring, and yet almost all with a depth level which would allow a imaginative staff to create a drill (rather than merely play in place or pretend one was on a concert hall stage climbing scaffolding.) It might be a great season to be an audience member.

  6. But that has nothing to do with a show announcement. Had you made your statement two days ago prior to the show announcement I would have agreed wholeheartedly. My reaction had to do with tying the show announcement directly to their being the corps to beat.

  7. Good luck to Cadets nation. This must feel real good. Last year must have felt like a recovery effort and this year with the impedance fully out of the way, must feel like a rebirth of sorts. I wish you all a great year. I enjoy reading all the positivity.

  8. The concept is accessible and most of the source music will be recognizable to many. Also, the Rocky piece harkens back to BAC 1991, and just as was the case then, the underdog surviving and then prevailing certainly would seem to be an allegory on the Boston Crusaders. Not hyping, but it would be a reasonable assumption that the upward trajectory of the corps seems like it might continue.

  10. Blue Devils played " Happy Days are Here Again " in 2009, and parlayed that into a DCI Title too. They can play anything. ANYTHING, imo.. and it would not hurt them on the score sheets. Talent allows this. Heck, they could probably play " Three Blind Mice " ..... " Mary Had a Little Lamb " and so forth. and make it work on the sheets for them.

  13. well, as much as i love to crap on show announcements, let's look at some history here: 18 DCi Championships since 1976......7 since 2007. Finalist since 74. Never lower than 2nd since 2007. Only 8 times outside of the top 3 since 1974. Average placement is 2.2. Oh and the last time they went two years in a row without winning was 2005 and 2006. So yeah while I haven't been a BD honk for several of the last 15 years, I'd say history supports his claim

  14. And you prove my point. If BD hasn’t in any year since 2007, who’s been a close second? 08? 11? 13? 16? 18? yup. BD. Wanna win that’s the corps ya gotta beat.

  16. As long as BD remains the most experienced corps in DCI—both in MM and staff—they will be a medalist. Not difficult to predict.

  31. As always (well at least as of the more recent era of drum corps), it’s going to be all about how the arrangers decide to mash up all the pieces into their own creation. I agree - after looking at and hearing the rep that is trickling in, I am hopeful so far that there will be some good musical moments this year.

  32. While all of that may be true, that doesn’t appear to be what chaddyt was getting at. I’m with HockeyDad on this one. The show announcement comes out, and as a result, the post says now, the Blue Devils once again are the corps to beat - before anyone has played one note in a competition.

  33. The most successful drum corps organization in DCI history is ran as a business which in turn facilitates performing ensembles. They figured out long ago that excellent business people, those who succeed at running a multi-million dollar per-year business, see the necessity in staying far away from creativity; and that excellent creative people are horrible at running a business. They know that the ED should be strictly an adminitrative business position; one who not only hires the best creative staff, but also stays out of their creative way. The thousands of failed corps never learned that lesson.

  35. Exactly this. I too used to the think the Scouts were screwed all the time. I was wrong. Scott Stewart was wrong. They were never screwed. Of course, there are years were perhaps they could have placed a spot or two higher (or lower) and I wouldn't have argued otherwise. When contests are close, I have faith in the judges. I am writing them off. I'm sorry. I am. I am tired of having hope every off season only to be disappointed. It's rare when I'm not disappointed (2010, 2012, 2015) but more often than not as soon as I see the design I realize it's over. I just think as long and Dan and Chris are in charge it's going to get worse and worse.

  36. Well, not quite. You have to remember the Mason era is long gone. The activity has evolved considerably since then. Relative to other corps during his tenure, Mason did have the corps on a positive trajectory. His shows were also for the most part well designed. Personally, I think the one thing Scouts shows lacked during the Mason era was the demand/content necessary to catch corps ahead of them, rather than the corps behind them catching them. Still, that was a good period for the Scouts in terms of show design, and somewhat competitively. I firmly believe the 2015 results were a Mason hangover, and were Mason still with the corps they would be placing considerably higher than 16th. The problem with the current leadership of the Scouts is that they just are way in over their heads. They are lost. They have no idea what they are doing. 2016 was an entertaining show that had many problems, but it was still entertaining. In 2017, in reaction to missing finals the year before, the design team did a complete 180. Not only did the corps lose their identity with a completely boring show musically and visually, but the competitive gains were so marginal that the risk didn't pay off. The show was not well designed enough for that risk to pay off. In 2018, it seems we had another reaction and the show that came out of it was so ridiculous. Sadly, I was honestly so embarrassed for the membership last year. Had I been given that show to perform I would want to quit. I commend the membership for sticking it out (brotherhood) because it must have been really hard to not walk away. A big difference between Mason and Chris/Dan is Mason knew what he was doing, Chris/Dan are so clueless that it's laughable. I'm sorry, but you are a complete idiot if you are presented with that ridiculous prop, that utterly laughable narration, those uniforms, that musical design and that visual design and think it's ok. It's not. Far from it. It was also a complete waste to have the female player last year. She obviously is tremendously talented, but it was a huge waste. She was literally given nothing interesting to do or play, and that dress she wore was so dull. Last year's show was a complete and total failure on every single level. They were lucky they weren't beat by SCV Cadets and BDB. It's fortunate for them that those two corps are sitting out finals this year. I have no faith in 2019. I think it's going to get worse and worse. Really - who would want to march? Why would anyone? Answer: because you need to train to audition for BD, Bluecoats, or Blue Stars. Scouts are turning into a feeder corps, if they haven't fully turned into one already.
