  1. So, a few words in defense of myself with regard to hype or not. When I spent time with BAC at move ins in 2017, I posted on DCP that they were so good I could see them coming in 6th or 7th. The collective wisdom here was that "no way...they came in 12th last August...etc". Boston finished 6th in 2017. When I visited last year, my reactions from the 2018 move in were that they might be as high as 4th or 5th. This time, more people found that to be believable. Boston finished 5th. It is not hype to say that the 2019 edition of BAC is by far the best. Everything from the design of the program, to the props, to the level of the amazing guard and drum line, and yes..you heard right....this is unquestionably the best hornline ever to come out of Boston. Hopefully, videos of tomorrow night's concert in the park will be enlightening. And WAIT until you guys see the uniforms... One last thing....somebody on here last week referred to me as a fair weather fan of BAC. For the record, I marched in this drum corps in 1980 as part of a 28 man hornline. I taught the corps for 8 years, including 1983 with 19 horns and a total corps membership of 51 (yeah...we took one bus to Miami). I have been around the corps in various capacities for 40 years. This year, my considered opinion is that they might very well win in Detroit and go on to medal in Indy. You're darned right that I am excited for these kids and this organization. Some may call this hype. I consider it the chickens coming home to roost after 79 years.

  2. One section used a high mark for all of 12 beats. Considering they goosed stepped after that for about 12 beats I would say special effect. No one else in the corps was using a high mark time. Like many others on this thread I have the same concerns about Phantom and would love to see them return to their former glory. However, I will wait until I see the show to make any judgments. I have also watched several of the Vlogs by members. They are working hard, leaning a lot, and having a good time. They also seem to really like this show. Let's give em a chance.

  3. I think Jurassic Park would be great to get them used to dealing with old Alumni, and so they could really understand what it was like " Back in the Day"

  6. There is a correct answer here, and that answer is VK 1992. Mandarins last year had stilts and a turntable. But they didn't have Godzilla and the Energizer Bunny. Or a shark. Point VK.

  7. craiga you've supported the corps in good times and bad (and lord knows there's been plenty of bad times over the last 79 years). And your love for the corps has never wavered. seems like the complete opposite of a fair-weather fan to me. Obviously the person who made that comment has NO clue.

  14. The Santa Clara Vanguard is proud to present their 2019 production – Vox Eversio! Throughout history, counter-culture movements have come about to express opposition of mainstream ideas and beliefs. From the Beat Generation of the 50’s, to the Hippie Movement of the 60’s, and even the Underground Punk Rock Scene of the 70’s & 80’s. This summer, join the revolution as we set out to make our voices heard in a world where the pressure to conform too often takes priority over the expression and celebration of individuality. “Vox Eversio invites the audience into a world in which the courageous choice of nonconformity is not only accepted, but celebrated,” said Michael Gaines, VMAPA Creative Director and SCV Visual Designer. “The choice to bring this show to life was made easier with the knowledge that this skilled cast of performers would be able to perform it with an authenticity that must be experienced to be believed.” A wide range of styles and inspirations form the basis of Vox Eversio’s musical program. Running the gamut from dark and edgy, to relatable and introspective – these entertaining selections are tailored to show off the talents and maturity of this year’s cast. “FRATERNITY” by Thierry Deleruyelle “AUDIVI MEDIA NOCTE” by Oliver Waespi “NOTHING ELSE MATTERS” by Metallica ORIGINAL MUSIC by Paul & Sandi Rennick As with the musical composition, the identity of this corps is grounded in the personality of the cast. Throughout the design process, members have been encouraged to explore their own individuality, helping to shape new and interesting perspectives on what it means to resist the existential pressures of conformity. “The talent and experience of the 2019 cast is tremendous,” said Scott Koter, SCV Program Coordinator. “Even more impressive is their willingness to take risks and pour themselves into the identity of the show, stretching the designers creatively and the staff instructionally. This reckless abandon and willingness to follow a different path is at the core of Vox Eversio’s message.” Check out the 2019 SCV Performance Schedule and come see “Vox Eversio” in a city near you!

  19. I predict there are going to be 12 placed in finals.

  20. OF COURSE THEY ARE!! I can't tell you how many times I've gone into a show without knowing the story line, see a well timed lunge and know immediately it's about the trials and tribulations of Confucius. ....duh. 😉

  21. Their storyline is set in the 15th century. They may have still been using high mark time back then.

  25. Back to the OP... moving forward... Full-on laser effects, along the lines of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's amazing special-effects show.... and holograms and /or videos to allow a corps to do a "Nat King Cole/Natalie Cole" sort of thing. Say, the Blue Devils playing a tune (or segment of a tune) live, with the Blue Devils from the past (any given year).

  26. Yup, Guard spent the day still rehearsing in raglafarT. Tomorrow is a well earned R&R day, then Thursday is our last day in Indiana before we head out to Wisconsin.

  32. Since this is a prediction thread, how about an actual prediction...😉 Without knowing everyone's music/theme, this is a shot in the dark. Likely tight competition at the top and in the 10-16 range. Could be one of those years like 2007 where a top 5-caliber show places 7th. So doing my best to balance emotion and reason: 15. Academy - loved their show last year, pretty much holding in place 14. Madison Scouts - slowly working their way back up with a young group and a much more crowd-friendly entry 13. Spirit of Atlanta - knocking on the door yet again 12. Phantom Regiment - in a by a whisker 11. Blue Knights - not knowing much about them it's hard to say if they are recapturing the momentum from years past 10. Crossmen - a dark horse to move up, hopefully another great music book 9. Mandarins - their flavor really seems to be catching on 8. Blue Stars - perhaps another stretch like 2008-2010 7. Cadets - looks to be much improved yet again but the groups above just have too much of an edge 6. Cavaliers - I really would like to see them higher and was a huge fan of their (admittedly over-designed) show last year...but hearing too much hype from the other groups 5. Bluecoats - Ok, as an alum I am officially hedging my bets...can they find and max out another cool off-the-wall concept? Is percussion regrouping after last year's dropoff? Hard to figure with this intense cone of silence. 4. Boston Crusaders - This staff sure knows how to make a show flow so seamlessly...if the music captions are stepping up as have been reported and the guard remains on top this one could be very interesting 3. Vanguard - It seems the pattern for non-BD groups after winning a championship is to double down on all the effects that got you there, with mixed results...can't really count them out with Gaines in the mix 2. Crown - Thank you CC for introducing such wicked awesome tunes to the field this year and they are finally hitting their stride 1. Blue Devils - Hearing the pre-season clips left me feeling that once again they have the winning concept and book (plus they seem really PO'ed after last year) Very excited to see how this all shakes out! I honestly think we are entering a golden era of 21st century drum corps.

  37. Yeah totally missed your wit. That's on me, duh! However, I'll stand by my prediction/guess. I guess i don't always subscribe to the DCI tenet that whomever was good before will be equally good again. Especially since that can be a self fulfilling prophecy. I once lived in Missouri for an unenjoyable 4 years, I didn't take away much from my time there, but I do follow the idea that you need to "show me". I think Boston will show me. I looked at it this way: This experienced and proven staff is in their 3rd season together, they had an excellent recruiting year and the overall talent level throughout the entire corps is unquestionably up. They were fairly close at Finals. Bloo 96.95, Crown 95.5, Boston 94.313 only 2.637 apart. Boston will need to show they belong in the mix and I think they will do just that. We'll know soon enough. I'd love to hear what the thoughts are after tomorrow night.

  39. There was a leak that reveled the possible rep for this year’s show. The leak has since been removed. I have no idea if the information was accurate but if it is then it makes sense why some posters are a tad bit skeptical. That being said, I have no reason to believe that we will all be anything but impressed with the arrangements. Bloo has produced hit after hit consecutively so I trust their judgement.

  41. A List of Team Bonding Films Movies can stir our feelings and emotions in a way that cannot be achieved with words alone. If you’re looking to inspire a team, showing a movie that features strong teamwork can bond a group with a common appreciation of the power of working together. Here's a list of Team Bonding Films that promote team building, positive team dynamics and leadership (Sorted by Date) (1963) The Great Escape Based on a true story, a group of 250 men escape from a German prisoner of war camp in 1944. This film embodies the ability be resourceful, establish specific roles within a group and to overcome the odds in extreme adversity. (1984) Ghostbusters There is something inspiring about a troupe of disorganized parapsychologists working together to fight supernatural foes. In the face of super slimy and puffy danger, the Ghostbusters stress the importance of all the working parts of a team. Improvement, leadership, practice and teamwork are all major themes you can’t miss. FYI: Both the original and remake are great for team building! (1989) Dead Poet’s Society English teacher John Keating inspires his students to look at poetry with a different perspective of authentic knowledge and feelings. (1989) Glory A film based on the fight of the U.S. Civil War’s first all-black regiment to overcome prejudice and become a successful and cohesive unit. (1992) The Mighty Ducks Leave it to beautiful-haired Coach Gordon Bombay to give epic team building advice. This classic 90s movie covers everything from teamwork to building focus. The Ducks may have started at the bottom but they fly to the top. Why? Because of awesome leadership and primo teamwork, of course. (1993) Cool Runnings A group of Jamaican bobsledders can’t help but dream of the Olympics. Thanks to a disgraced former bobsled coach, their dream becomes a reality. While this isn’t your classic sports movie, Cool Runnings is a gold mine of lessons, from leadership to team spirit. (1995) Apollo 13 This classic Ron Howard film is based on the true story of the 13th Apollo mission to the moon. After their spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage, the astronauts must work together against the odds and devise a strategy to return to Earth. Commander Jim Lovell maintains control in a chaotic situation which inspires the confidence of his group. Apollo 13 is a great example of showing team members working together to overcome adversity. 1999) Any Given Sunday A behind-the-scenes look at the life-and-death struggles of modern-day Pro Football players and those who lead them. (2000) Remember the Titans A true story about the T.C Williams High School football team and the trials and tribulations they experience as they attempt to unite with a football team from a different culture. As they begin to trust each other and focus on a common goal, they win the state championship. Remember the Titans is a great film that perfectly illustrates hard work, dedication, leadership, sacrifice and success. (2000) Thirteen Days A dramatization of President Kennedy’s struggle to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. This film studies how a leader and his team confront a crisis and stay focused despite huge pressures from both inside and outside the organization. (2001) Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring J.R.R. Tolkien was a master storyteller, but he also was an expert in strong teams and excellent leaders. The movie adaptation of The Fellowship of Ring is full of lessons on greed, power and bad leadership. The most important takeaway for teams: how a successful project hinges on the strength of the bond between its participants. (2001) Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure is a true story of Shackleton’s 1914 Endurance expedition to the South Pole and his epic struggle to lead his 28-man crew to safety after his ship was crushed in the pack ice. (2001-2011) The Harry Potter Movies When you’re fighting the wizard-Devil himself, teamwork becomes second nature. The Harry Potter books and movies stress the importance of teams and how each individual contributes to the overall success of the group. Where would Harry be without Hermione, Ron and Dumbledore (and everyone else who helps him)? (2004) Miracle This film tells the true story of Herb Brooks, the player-turned-coach who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory over the seemingly invincible Russian squad and illustrates that the chemistry and loyalty within a team are as important as talent. (2005) Coach Carter The true story of Ken Carter, a top basketball player, who returns to his local high school and coaches its dysfunctional basketball team. Using the players common love of the game and their need to be part of something bigger, Coach Carter transforms the team to one based on discipline, hard work and courage. (2006) Facing the Giants The story of a losing coach with an underdog football team facing their fears of failure head on. The team manages to achieve surprising results by having faith and giving their very best at all times. (2006) Glory Road Glory Road is a story of how Texas Western coach Don Haskins led the first all-black starting line-up for a college basketball team to the NCAA national championship. (2006) Take the Lead The true story of a dance teacher who believes in the talent of a group of “problem” kids. This film recognizes the power and importance of every single member in a team. (2007) Chak De India Chak De India is a story of a hockey player who returns to the game as a coach of a women’s hockey team. (2009) Invictus This movie shows the inspiring true life story of Nelson Mandela’s first days as president of South Africa and how he joins forces with the captain of the South African Rugby team to help unite their country. Invictus is an inspiring movie about building a good team in troubling circumstances and illustrates the first class leadership qualities of Mandela. (2012) Pitch Perfect After hard year, The Barden Bellas, a college female acapella group, is forced to rebuild their reputation. By building a new and extremely diverse team and going against traditional acapella standards, the Barden Bellas succeed in shaking up the acapella world.
