And I love them for it, no pandering to the crowd, the MM's are the main priority. They receive such a wide education in so many different areas of the arts because BD is willing to peek into a huge variety of artistic areas. Some may see that as against the core values of drum corps but in my eyes, the members are priority one and audience number two. Just a brief look at all the realms they've explored in the past decade: 2008: they brought a poem by Ferlinghetti to life and represented it through music and visuals 2009: explored the mindset of artists and people during the great depression using the music from that time 2010: they reflect back on Kenton and Graettinger's previously unappreciated work in their "City of glass," educating the members on their works and their influence on the jazz genre 2011: Burt Bacharach. Nuff said 2012: the members learn about an artistic and philosophical movement known as the dada movement and how it has influenced contemporary art today 2013: Rite of Spring. It had been done before but I don't think any corps had gone down to the level of detail that BD did that year. The piece itself was extremely controversial at the time and I think the show accurately reflected that. 2014: exploring the world of cinema through Fellini and learn about his influence in that sphere 2015: the idea of bringing stories to life on the field. Not super novel or intellectual, but I'll never complain about Goodwin and Sondheim being performed 2016: Members get an in depth look at Shakespeare's The Tempest 2017: what better lesson on the history of the corps than a full show dedicated to it? 2018: Probably their coolest concept, taking a famous painting and turning it into a story on the field. 2019: folklore behind the Ghostlight I mean, does any corps really capture the essence of the arts as a whole to the level of BD? I personally don't think so. Sidenote, the people who think every BD show is the same are crazy. Just look at all the different expressions of art they've explored through a single medium!14 points

I'm so excited!! My daughter and I are flying out today. We won't see prelims but will be there for Friday and Sat. nights' performances! I feel like I've come first circle. My first drum corps show was back in 1983 (I think?) in Lubbock Texas. The 2 corps I remember from that night were the Blue Devils and Velvet Knights. Fast forward many many years, my oldest son loves marching band as a freshman in HS, was playing trombone, marched euphonium and asked me if I had ever heard of the Blue Devils. His band director is a BD alum. My son marched 3 years with another great corps and has marched BD the last 2 years (his "dream corps"). This is his age out year. I'm sure I will crying Sat. night. ❤️ GO BLUE DEVILS!!9 points

Some of the performances that leave me the most emotionally touched are the prelims/semis runs when a corps that knows for sure that it’s it gives it their all and you can tell they left it all out there. Of course that happens in finals, but there’s just something about the really really really high energy “we don’t really care where we score” kinda performances you get today and tomorrow.9 points

Also huge congrats to BD guard on the well deserved Guard win!8 points

Some people say Blue Knights and Mandarins are too dark or esoteric. Some people say Bluecoats are too hokey. I say there’s room for both in this activity.8 points

I’m glad I stopped drinking the anti BD Koolaid the last few years. They blow me away with their quality of movement and approach to show design.7 points

That full out Crown brass sound. There’s nothing like it.7 points

As much as I have enjoyed SCVC & BDB the past five years, neither one has put out a program even close to that level of design and audience engagement. What a year, Spartans. Absolutely magical.7 points

Just to add - thanks to Kevin for doing these play by plays, especially for those of us stuck in an office (and goofing off on company time) with no Flo or other means of keeping up on things. Great stuff, Kevin. I can still get those visual pictures in my head without being there.6 points

Good luck to the Cadets today! Although this season has been extremely disappointing, I congratulate the members for sticking with it and never giving up.6 points
