  1. BK’s first percussion entrance. The hair on my arms basically stood up throughout the entire show. It was an emotional juggernaut.

  2. “Where the Heart Is” was an amazing feel good show. This is my favorite Blue Stars show of the past decade. I always thought the next BS show should have been the “Break Up” show, where the couple fought for possession of the house and the old school BS uniform.

  3. I would say no. For one thing being a member of the Hall of Fame is a privilege and honor, not a right. Second, DCI and YEA deemed the accusations as credible. Remember too, an accusation of rape often has little to do with whether sexual activity took place, it is based on consent. Did the accuser consent or was the accuser able to consent is critical. So even if he is found not guilty, he is not declared innocent, and you still have the boundary issues.

  4. roman blenski is a board member of an org that won't remove gh from their hall of fame, and george bonfiglio isn't a part of their hall of fame. sounds legit. what else?

  5. You're doing a lot of hand waving and making up numbers here. You have no idea what the details of DCI's Flo deal are and I think you are vastly oversimplifying what it takes to live stream an event the size of a DCI show

  7. IMO, making the top 12 should have been the least of Spirit's worries, as they should be breathing a sigh of relief that finals week ended when it did. That amazing corps from Diamond Bar CA was running them down at an alarming rate. Another night or two, SOA could have found themselves in 14th. And i loved Spirit's show. Pacific Crest just put alot of corps on notice for next year.

  8. Just a clarification... “At the end of a criminal trial, a finding by a judge or jury that a defendant is not guilty. An acquittal signifies that a prosecutor failed to prove his or her case beyond a reasonable doubt, not that a defendant is innocent.”

  10. I have to agree with you. There were many "chill" moments of the Madison show. The passion, the field entrance, the meat grinder, the M, the Fleur de lis. Another show full of moments for me was BK. Seeing a reflection in the mirror with no member directly in front of it, the moments of pure silence, the soloists, the trumpet feature. Oh man. Some other chill moments Hell Freezing over The end of Crowns Ballad and hitting the Crown formation The intricate musical layering in Eleanor Rigby Cavaliers ballad

  12. The G7 movement was a significant moment in the activity, The greed of a few enraged the others. Several years later the competitive landscape has started to change and the performance levels of the most corps outside of the G7 have improved dramatically. It will be interesting to watch it unfold over the coming years.

  16. I hesitate to do the "back in my day" thing... but it pretty much has always been a tough grind for the DCA weekend warriors. My first year with Sunrisers... 1977... we had 19 shows, including prelims and finals. Plus several parades... mostly Memorial Day weekend and July 4. And no full weekends off basically from early April through Labor Day weekend. (We did get Easter Sunday and Mother's Day off. LOL. ) We did take some Sundays off during the summer when we had a Saturday show in upstate NY or New England. Getting off the bus at 5, 6, 7 AM on a Sunday morning didn't translate to a productive rehearsal on those given Sundays. It's just a different era now. People have more going on in their lives than just drum corps. I don't blame them at all for not wanting to do it, year in and year out. And I salute those who still are in the game.

  17. Thanks. I just noticed something else about the WDCHOF. Roman Blenski is a member. George Bonfiglio was never inducted. Good quality control there. You could probably go on and on, but WDCHOF is so discredited in my mind now that it’s pretty much a joke.

  22. Same. When I first saw/heard it, at the Memorial Day show-and-tell, it sounded as if someone had lit a fuse on a stick of dynamite. Then, POW Others: The sight of Cavies' rifles flying through the air at the end of their show The supernova circle of Blue Stars hit in Frozen BD's trademark swirl Cadets' 10-minute tenor feature More BK: All the negative aural space and pure artistry of Hurt. The battery echoes from stage right were just enormously effective. And Daniel Belcher conducting Liquid; what a gas. The way Crown brought it, and brought it, and brought it through their entire closer. Hugely satisfying payoff. Bluecoats' long, long decrescendo off their first hit. Sooo musical. Scouts' tumbling blocks down to the sideline on stage left. Savannah Light taking charge of the Troopers. She's, like, 5 feet high, and Ten Feet Tall. The duet in Gabriel's Oboe.

  25. Rockford is a relative basket case, economically. If any Rockford company is charitable minded, I'd hope it'd be for programs designed to allow the lowest income kids in their town to access at least rudimentary music, arts, or dance training, not funding a program for non-local college kids who can afford $3500+ for summer band. Regiment has 2000 alums, most likely. How many of them support the corps with $100-1000 per year? That's where they should start when it comes to charitable support.

It's like a bad version of Oliver Stone's JFK around this place today (or should I say an even worse version of JFK, since it's uniquely bad in its own right). No conspiracies, no drama, just a somewhat dull but predictable business model.

  31. I think that DCI is starting to be exposed as being run by Old people that don't really have the business acumen to properly monetize this activity. Just some old Band Directors who dont really understand Show business. They need new blood on the board to really take this activity into the future. Hell Dan was the Director of Glassmen in 85 and ran Glassmen for 10 years before being elected as CEO of DCI. There's a 22 year old Marketing major and a 24 year old MBA graduating College this year that could do a better job at running DCI and making it more money than it currently does. This got me going down a rabbit hole to try and figure out if DCI is a Corporation or if its operating as a Non-Profit. And I found this searching FL Corporations; http://search.sunbiz.org/Inquiry/CorporationSearch/SearchResultDetail?inquirytype=EntityName&directionType=Initial&searchNameOrder=DRUMCORPSINTERNATIONAL F970000033810&aggregateId=fornp-f97000003381-fd75e58c-14cc-41a0-8337-ed45308e057d&searchTerm=drum corps&listNameOrder=DRUMCORPSENTERPRISES N419160 and on the IL Corporation search; https://www.ilsos.gov/corporatellc/CorporateLlcController Some interesting things. The EIN Was revoked for non filing in 2005 in Florida The Corp was Revoked in IL in 2008 Jeff Fielder was listed on the 2004 Filing as a Chairman of DCI. Anyone have any up to date Tax Fillings for DCI? Any idea what name they are filing under?

  33. I think the real disadvantage is the extra travel day for any show they need to travel to outside of their region. While everyone in the northeast is already rehearsing, the midwest/south else is still on a bus.

  34. I'm reminded of a film critic's comment about the Tom Hanks movie, Cast Away, which I paraphrase: "In the end, it feels like a commercial for Fed Ex. Don't get me wrong: I use Fed Ex and I like Fed Ex. But I go to them to be sent, not moved."

  36. Me too! There were some subtleties in that show that really connected with me. As an aside, I remember someone on here ranting about them playing John Adams’ Nixon in China. They thought Blue Stars were glorifying communism. Lol

  38. As far as uniforms, companies like Nike,Adidas,Champion can make team specific uniforms. So there's no reason that same approach can't be used by DCI for corps uniforms. I also think DCI is missing out on a number of "economics of scale" opportunities: 1.Bid out non perishable food items, including,of course PB&J. :-) 2.Bid out non-food dry goods like cleaning supplies 3.Bid out vehicle leasing 4.it may be a bit more complicated, but a number of companies bid out fuel purchases for their vehicles all over the states. DCI knows every corps' travel itinerary ,housing locations etc. So they should be able to work out the logistics for food and dry goods. I'd also think, depending on locations, they could work with places like Costco for perishable food items.

  42. The Fall and Rise (Blue Knights 2018) Why? I just always like their music. Also, they were visually "spot on". In past years whenever I've listened to Rite of Spring at home, in my head I always pictured people in purple and gold striped pajamas pushing pyramids around a green field.

  46. a few years back, twitter made $15 million in revenue off of broadcasting 10 NFL games. So $1.5 million per game on average. let's just say that dci somehow got 1% as many viewers to watch as those who viewed nfl games, which is highly unlikely, but we'll go with it. that comes to about $150000 of revenue for twitter for 10 dci broadcasts, so an average of $15000 per broadcast. dci isn't that popular. sorry.

  47. In all seriousness, garfield had a very thoughtful post in the middle of one of the G7 blowups in the early years of this decade in which he went to great lengths to try to see the big picture from the view of those corps. But really no one was able to make a strong [case in their favor]. As for other corps improving dramatically, I don't see it. Look at the "best of the 2010s" poll questions. Right now, the 10th place and 12th place favorites, i.e., those corps that are now seen as the ideal at those levels, are shows from 2011 and 2012, respectively. Other regular non-G7 finalist corps like BK and BS have yet to beat their pre-2010 best placements in the years since. The one big exception is BAC (although even they have yet to place higher than fifth), and yes, they did seem to be motivated in part by outrage at the G7 -- but they also appear to have been saving up for some time to buy the talent needed to move up. In the meantime, two of the G7, Cadets and Phantom, have been overtaken less because other corps are delivering better shows than Cadets and Phantom did in the early 2010s but because Cadets and Phantom are producing notably worse shows than they did before.
