  1. Rumors are a certain west coast staff is moving en masse to Pio. They will be bringing Stravinsky with a twist of 80's pop culture nostalgia to the field for Pio's 2020 production "The Rite of Irish Spring". I'm hearing they are shooting to be clean as a whistle.

  4. It happened pre-DCI as well. When Garfield released our great percussion instructor, George Tuthill, after the 71 season, a healthy chunk of the drumline went to the Caballeros where he was also the drum guy. I mean....who would want to play in a drumline taught by the new guy named "Fred Sanford". šŸ˜²

  7. GH has already settled a case with YEA that alleged wrongful termination, withheld compensation, etc. Assuming YEA has competent lawyers, they likely required him to release all claims as a condition of receiving that settlement. I doubt there's going to be any more between him and YEA.

  12. Excuse me but is any of that going on in this thread? No. The drama seems to be coming from those trying to say naming names on staff changes or speaking of a rumor is tantamount to treason. It's silly. It's a small fringe activity and this message board is an even smaller even less important sub-set of that. Quit making this out to be equivalent to Russia farking around in the US election.

  13. don't worry George. Remember what a capybara is. On the DCI corps announcement page, Music City cites something that will surely distract your fencing partner Cappybara when they suggest a "Salute to Rodentia." "and are perfect for the ensemble thinking of doing their own salute to rodentia." MUSICCITYDRUMCORPS.ORG

  15. 1. no TV; people listened to radio to distract/entertain them. (no cell phones or computers either.) 2. no air-conditioning for the common masses 3. patriotism was high and crowd seeking cheap entertainment as nation was just coming out of throes of The Great Depression which was not fully overcome until WWII (check any history or economics faculty at any institution of higher learning.) 4. Montreal and Buffalo crowds have been the largest for DCI era; density of population in the Northeast may be a factor as well.

  16. I think this chart by Holsinger would make for a great Cadets show. Edit: This is a neat version of the Holsinger work (On The Grand Prairie Texas). I like the photo montage throughout.

  17. Hey, everyone is allowed their opinion. I love the Bluecoats, as you all know, so I loved Tilt. And I especially like that you enjoyed them a lot. Great show! It certainly was vintage Bluecoats with some game-changing design (along with BD, of course). But one thing to remember about that show is that it spent most of the summer in 3rd place under Cadets and Blue Devils. BD was not getting beat. I saw that early on. Cadets were a real disappointment to me because they had the seeds for a good show, with great talent; but somehow they managed to destroy it with cheese and more cheese. Cadets still beat Bluecoats at Quarterfinals by 1.1 or something like that. At semis it was closer. At Finals is when Tilt grabbed 2nd place. I was thankful the judges bumped 'Coats up a notch. Tilt definitely belonged in 2nd place. Cadets could easily have been dumped to 4th if you ask me. I actually thought that on Finals night Carolina Crown should have jumped up to 3rd.

  18. 1! E=MC2- I had actually seen a production of Einstein on the Beach years before Crown did it. I thought No Facking way Crown can pull this off. THEY DID! What a unique incredible show! One of my top 12 corps of all time. Also Sprach Zarathustra * Einstein on the Beach * Walking With Heroes * The Devil's Bridge * The Abyss * The Light Fantastic * The Dark Side of the Moon 2. Down Side Up - Just a fun exciting show full of unforgettable moments. 3. Babylon - It was good to see SCV back on top. ( Those of us who remember the 70's and 80's) 4. Between Angels and Demons- Sacktig's kaleidoscopic drill, Good vs Evil and, a fun fan friendly show. Can't beat that! 5. Metamorph- I remember watching the 1975 and 1976 Blue Devils, Thinking Wow, This corps is next level. I hope they stick around. It was great to see them pay homage to their pass. 6. Through a FellINKiesque Ghostlit Cabaret- Good but Formulaic Drum Corps.

  21. As maybe the biggest Crown honk here... Yes, I was disappointed with those two results. No, I don't think they were "ripped off". Judges have their opinions and preferences. Sometimes they align with mine, sometimes they don't. There is no such thing as objective scoring in drum corps. It's all just opinions.

  29. I'd expect projections down onto tarps or something like what you see with some of pro basketball introduction hoopla. All they'd have to do is set up some sort of high pole or something. Heck Blue Stars could have mounted a projector up on that mountain and then tarped past the 20 yard line and projected all sorts of stuff onto it. Keep an eye out for whoever buys O'Fallon's white tarps maybe...hah

  32. Whether people from SCV go to Phantom has a great deal to do with how potential staff from SCV uses the first year at Phantom. You cite Boston Crusaders as an example. A great staff was assembled. It seems as if a good number of color guard members followed staff. With musicians there is no question the staff attracted many, and convinced some of the younger members from 2016 who had potential and thought of auditioning elsewhere to audition for BAC. Some just aged out this past year. Iā€™ve never seen numbers to know how many went from Cadets to BAC, nor have I seen numbers of percussionists who marched with U Mass. Though audition numbers were excellent for the 2017 season, I think it was 2018 and more so in 2019 that Boston Crusaders was viewed as a destination corps. So what new staff does in the first year will be critical. It will be a challenge too. 2019ā€™s 4-6 will be hungry to make the top three in 2020, 1-3 will not want to lose ground.

  33. Remember when Jeff Ream said on the Cadets thread that you're doing the most out of anyone to stoke the flames? He was totally correct (then again, when is he not?). Give it a rest and let people be. If the mods have an issue, theyll take care of it. They already took care of your personal attack on me in the Cadets thread.

  39. This is just impossible for me. Same as it was for 2nd and 3rd place. Too many fantastic and legendary shows. a) In terms of technical excellence and killer performance levels, it would be Felliniesque by the Blue Devils 2014. I was fascinated by the show, found it very entertaining, and the demand and performance levels are simply through the roof. b) In terms of my personal Favorite, it's a close call, but I choose Metamorph by Blue Devils, 2017. In some ways, their show this year (Ghostlight) was even better designed and just as entertaining, but there was something about Metamorph that grabbed me...like an addictive drug. I could not stop watching that show all summer. Carolina Crown in 2013 (E=mc2) is a close 2nd, and Down Side Up by the Bluecoats 2016 is a really close 3rd. So from an entertainment perspective, this is how I rank them: (and may be subject to change in 10 minutes) Metamorph (Blue Devils 2017) E=mc2 (Carolina Crown 2013) Down Side Up (Bluecoats 2016) Between Angels and Demons (Cadets 2011) - maybe the best traditional drill and music show with no props of this bunch. Ink (Blue Devils 2015) - incredible design, entertaining, great theme, and the ballad and the closer are worth the price of admission Ghostlight (Blue Devils 2019) - amazing design, and I am still watching this thing constantly. So impressive. Felliniesque (Blue Devils 2014) - definitely the most technically excellent show that was also quite entertaining. The most amazing Finals performance ever. Babylon (Santa Clara Vanguard 2018) - SCV was ON FIRE with this show! Love the visual design and how the props were used. The last 2 minutes are super powerful. One of the better endings in DCI History. Through a Glass, Darkly (Blue Devils 2010) - I was one of the few who really liked this show. When I saw them live I thought the mirrors were used so well and did add a cool effect to the visual program in ways I had never seen before. Cabaret Voltaire (Blue Devils 2012) - Definitely respect this show, and the corps was fantastic. Just not my favorite design by BD, but I am sure to others this is a masterpiece.

  44. Recency bias plays a role here. Still think Angels and Demons is the consummate drum corps show of the decade. But DSU is so different and so important to the trends of the activity that it has to get the vote.
