  6. Still love watching the sheer speed and demand of this visual package. Talk about cardio...and that mello section. Just crazy the demand in this visual and music program. (1993 Cadets, In The Spring at the Time When Kings Go Off to War)

  7. In all of my years following the drum corps activity; I've never seen this much staff change with so many corps in one year. The Blue Devils appear to be the only corps without major changes. With that being said, I'm going to make a very bold prediction for 2020; The Blue Devils will have an undefeated season and will win DCI (here's the really bold part) by two points. They might be tested and challenged...a little; but I don't foresee anybody besting them next summer. If I"m wrong, I'll eat a crow dinner with a slice of humble pie for dessert.

  8. I think both Bloo and BD were really REALLY good at performing and competing. Hence the .087 spread. From my perspective, BD was able to hang closer in GE than Bloo was able to in Visual. That was really the difference. The notion that BD is better at competing typically comes from the fact that they know how to CLEAN the heck out of a field show -- which is something everyone should be trying to do. Some people will say BD knows how to program a winner. I don't look at it that way. I think BD is good at competitive balance in programming, but I think they are more concerned with artistic value and quality programming. If you look at their shows from 2007 to now, every one of them is a work of art. Sure, some of them did not connect, but most did to some extent. In recent years they have been one of the more fan friendly corps. So they are obviously programming entertaining shows that also have competitive balance. Bloo and BD are both just incredible at programming, performing, and entertaining...each in their own unique way.

  9. That's a shame if true. It's to DCI's detriment to not have a percussion voice as unique as that duo's being performed by somebody every season.

  11. Football -- Sometimes if you move, you get penalized. Drum Corps -- If you don't move, you get penalized. Football -- The guards don't carry weapons and often have flags thrown their way. Drum Corps -- The Guard is heavily armed and often throw flags, sometimes to each other. And the obvious: Football: You get paid to play. Drum Corps: You pay to play. Hmmm ... new thread?

  14. Because football is the opposite of drum corps. For instance, they changed headgear from optional to mandatory; drum corps did the reverse.

  18. They certainly need a cohesive approach - however I personally felt 2019 we saw this trend waning and music more at the forefront in design/relevance Hoping in 2020 music (with marching) is once again the dominant design trend - songs with a beginning, middle and end. Totally agree though MikeN - not time for a retro/greatest hits show (as tempting as it may sound) Cadets 2020 should keep it simple - good music with good visual design. IMO

  19. After watching BD360 for 2019 I get the feeling it might be the opposite for BD. They really seem like they are simply out there performing and having fun with the knowledge that that they are totally prepared for what they are about to do. At least that is how it comes across to me.

  20. There aren't many Friday night drum corps shows anyway, even during the season, are there? I know you entered the "Friday" but, if that's stated, drum corps is probably safe. Of course, the mosquitos aren't killed off each winter because of global warming, so I'd be concerned if we were showing farting cows on the field.

  28. I would like to go on record that Will Pitts got the shaft. I think he was really growing into his role of brass arranger. I agree that program coordinator was too much, but he was improving greatly as arranger and I am sorry he is not in that role for 2020.
    3 points
  29. There are numerous corps out there that would be improved overnight by naming Will Pitts as their new arranger...IMHO.

  30. Yep, and if he was still in the Program Coordinator/Brass arranger position, I still would be. Judging by what xandandl said, it seems you and Continental have misunderstood my position due to the fact that I don't mince my words so I'll try to be more clear: just because I do not feel like WP was not fit for the roles he was in does not mean I dislike him as a person or want him out of the corps entirely. Those are assumptions and ridiculous leaps in logic to make. I watch every single vlog/post/video that comes out from the Phantom Regiment social media, I can see the positive impact he makes on the corps without even being in the corps. My position has always been from the beginning that in the right role, he'd be a net positive for the corps. But in the roles he was in for the past couple years, he was not, in my opinion, a net positive. To blindly follow someone due to their loyalty to a corps without acknowledging their shortcomings is not my style, and I'm sorry that I offend you because of that. That is all I have to say on it, if you want to further air your grievances, be my guest, but you will not be getting a response from me unless it's a PM. I am moving on to focus on 2020 with this new design team that I am VERY excited about

  32. I agree. Also my source is Mike Jackson, so I’m inclined to believe him. 😉 He has his reasons for resigning (and yes it was a resignation not a firing), but would like them to remain relatively private. He will most definitely be back in DCI when the time and place are right.

  35. Well, since this activity is a competition that includes performance I would say that BD was better at BOTH. Being a good performer means doing it under pressure when it matters most and BD proves every year just about that they are the best at that. I get a little tired of the whole BD writes to the sheets and writes shows to win. EVERYONE DOES THAT!!!! That and you diminish the kids that perfect the show and bring it to life with a level performance and professionalism that isn't baked into the design. The kids make that happen. Lot's of people paint portraits but it took DaVinci (the performer) to make it a masterpiece.

  36. Could not disagree with you more about Bluecoats performance level. They had performance issues all season long, up to and including finals night.

  37. I think there are right times and wrong times to do a throwback show. I truly feel 2020 is not one of those times. They really need to do something that looks forward next year and not backwards. Time to innovate. I really want to see something new and pushes the envelope. Bringing back a classic show is nice, but has been done a LOT from The Cadets. As far as encores go, I am okay with them playing something from the past. There's nothing wrong with that, although whatever it is needs to be exciting. The Cadets need to market themselves and make them a group that fans want to follow and kids want to join. We know what they can be, but a lot of younger fans see them for what they have been these last few years.

  40. Any idea if Shaw is bringing most of the brass staff from SCV with him? Very impressed with the staff changes PR has made. 2020 is looking like it could be an even more competitive year. Corps like PR and Cadets getting stronger is a good thing for DCI. Not sure how far either corps will move up, but I think both will be drastically improved.

  47. I just noticed that in the closer, where the brass joins in together, some of the guard spin their rifles in the air and then treat it like a hammer working on a train track. I think this was a reference to the 2004 show. I wonder what other references I am missing!
