  1. It sure is shocking that decades of financial mismanagement weren't fixed over night with a new administration

  5. Exactly. The DCI check is big, they have the larger USB events with gate and other revenues plus audition camp fees starting to arrive. It gets better from here... It will take a few years at best to get on nice solid ground. In the meantime, spend wisely on quality staff and design & give the members/volunteers/donors a good product and experience to rally around

  6. Gotcha. Will you then be comparing BAC to Phantom for the Coffin of the Decade trophy?

  7. Do you have anything positive to specifically name or did you start the thread just so you could to use your word "trash" Hurcs like you so often do to certain World Class DCI corps on their thread?

  9. Nope, the current management team is trying to recover from prior years of poor fiscal management. Sounds to me like some on this site would like to see the Cadets cease operations.

  10. this. The other corps stay under the radar though because they haven't been dragged through the press. and like i said two pages ago, the big end of year DCi check cures most ills, so it's probably not arrived yet

  11. I’m not sure why some seem to expect that 18 months after GH termination (and the bombshell news) all debt would be retired and the organization would be rolling in cash. It will take several years or longer. The delayed schedule for staff contracts isn’t unusually - 2 other 2019 top 12 corps are literally doing the same thing right now Drum corps is a losing financial proposition- and anyone that’s been involved in an organization for more than five minutes knows that Go Cadets!

  12. I’m “shocked” you spin this as negatively as possible. In the old days at Cadets (and many many other corps) bills just went unpaid - why do you think the corps name changed three times? To escape debt. Why do you think so many corps have folded with massive debts? Why do you think Cadets ran out of NJ to PA? The fiscal management, volunteer treatment etc were poor. Altering a payment schedule and letting folks know upfront is far far better than what was done under prior leadership

  13. I see lot of those comments as people trying to feel better about themselves by trashing others. Or as my mom put it “you don’t bring yourself up by tearing other people down”. Just keep hearing that mantra reading this thread...

  17. Stop: Spatzzz‘s attack on people who came before him/her. Get a clue, we’ve been doing drum corps a lot longer than you. Continue: Moving the activity forward by teaching music instead of prop management/staging. Start: Respecting people who are older than you. ( That’s for you Spatzzz) Really. 18. I wanted to wait until after the victory run to make this topic. Firstly a huge congratulations to BD on getting their 19th gold medal! This 2019 production will go down as one of my favorite ever by this corps. I am very excited to see what BD has in store for the new decade. This past year we saw BD innovate in the use of props and marched more traditional drill than their fellow medalists. I anticipate that this trend will continue next season. I also suspect the hornline will surprise us with their excellence! Any predictions as to what they might do next year? Any wish lists? My only wish is that they continue to maintain the classic BD sound; if they do that, I will love what they put on the field regardless of what it is As always, do it up, Devils!

  19. If you’re like me, you’ve been checking DCP constantly these past few weeks to see all the changes happening with World Class corps staffs. Unfortunately, the "Staff merry-go-round" thread is no longer a viable source for any information as it has been derailed by irrelevant topics for 40+ pages. Therefore, I’ve started this thread to be your one-stop shop for staff updates. I will try to update this post as corps continue to share new updates. You can help by posting new updates in this thread as you see them! 20. Is it time for DCI Judges to go all the way? With contemporary designers now “mailing it in” from Japan, Canada, and England (or Paris and the Isle of Capri if one listens to the costuming blather,) the days of local drum corps is over; the “I” in DCI stands for international. With more of the stalwarts catching contests on FloMarching rather than paying for flights/hotels/meals/tickets to view live shows, should this also prompt a change in judging drum corps contests? One-and-done refers now not only to Rook-outs, engineering students, med students and those too financially poor to afford the luxury of a long term marching career but also now refers to the number of live shows fans viewed within any season as recurring shows in one’s locale in the same summer are rare and uncertain. Considering the posts on DCP with the pontifications and infallible bulls from those whose only witness to the activity is through the movie houses, computers, and TV screens, one would swear that one need not be present physically in any stadium to assess a drum corps performance. In fact, DCI uses the faux-marketing mantra that it is “the major leagues of the marching arts.” Well, doesn’t the NHL leave the judging to the League Office in Toronto, and isn’t even America’s past-time, the MLB now referring the umpires’ decisions to the video-view in the New York office? If Harrisburg and Richmond are already serving this capacity on DCP, why not make it official for Woodstock, GA and the faculty lounges of Carmel, Avon, or Logan High Schools? Since corps aren’t doing drill any more, do we still need drill judges? Surely, they can’t see through megaprops. Instead of arguing how many feet or inches a field percussion judge might stumble to assess a Stanford candidate, should the judge not be able to give the right numbers while ensconced safely at home while enjoying time with his loved ones and family? No longer would such judges need to dodge axes or suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Brass and color guard judges have already made the beeline to the audience seating years ago. Why not in a nice Lazy-boy or Barcalounger the DCP judges use in their mancaves and bunkers? If in fact Tom Blair is considered by many as the chief judge of DCI by his camera direction of this or that aspect of a corps’ performance as viewed by the umpteen fans in the theaters, why not make it official and give him the power of the numbers on the score sheet? It is said by some in the Blue Devils and Crossmen camps that Tony DiCarlo and his secret agents have already been using these spy-cams in Military Park. With corps residual income seemingly down because Indy and Allentown customers are fewer while traumatic weather greater, just think of the cost savings to DCI no longer ferrying judges nationwide from one contest to another by plane, train or trailer. Hotel and food costs will be much lower although some judges might whimper about the loss of HiltonHHonors and other business perks. Just phone in the numbers. Brandt Crocker and Dan Potter can still make their announcements (“no vuvuzelas” still for 2020) and Reliable Rondo and Dennis can join the webinar phone-in crowd like every other DCI participant. (Tony might switch to the Homeland Security color coding for the screen crowd rather than imitating the runway ground crew with their hand signals. Some judges might give him extra credit for his enhanced hue use.) Contemporary changes in drum corps, the dissolution of tradition, the devolve to a new generation, and the entrance of modern technology prompt new perspectives to drum corps. Why not new perspectives to judging as well? Why do judges have to be physically present? Is it time for DCI judges to go all the way off the field and out of the stadium? Instead of worrying if DCI is as good as WGI, BOA, Texas UIL or DCA, how about a new way for a new time? What say you, home judges? Have at it.

  21. It doesn't need to be comparable to the top right away. It just needs to be, as Kdaddy puts it, "competent." The designs the past couple years have NOT been "competent" imo. If they can create a respectable design, they can slowly build from that, refine the design-creating process as the years go and they learn from mistakes, and slowly build themselves back up to where they used to be. With the new design team I think the pieces are mostly in place, it's just a matter of how well they use them

  22. C'mon, Jim. The song is catchy and easy to dance to. It could even be a great show theme for some DCI World Class Corps. I give it an 87.

  24. Clearly, that would be the best outcome. But I'll settle for an undefeated season in 2020 and most of the captions. AND a first-time 3-peat in 2021 😉

  27. I think the people who have tried to keep the corps afloat were worried about what they should have been worried about - getting the kids down the road safely and fielding a corps. The longer-term financial stability will be worked on, but they wouldn't be around right now without having done that. Can't make an omelette without cracking eggs. I think pulling certain people out of "retirement" was absolutely right- both for the on-field product and to get the kids in the door who can pay (not saying they couldn't before - just that talent begets talent).

  31. I found this thread interesting showing all the corps that have made finals since DCI began in 1972. I was a bit surprised when I realized how many corps have been in finals. And it was most interesting to see who has been in since the start and never out; who has been in, then out, then in again; and who has been in since they got in and has not fallen out. As far as the postings going to venues and the thoughts on domed venues versus open air, maybe the sound was great in KC but being in the stands while on the surface of the sun was not pleasant. Neither was Miami in August. There is absolutely no reason to be there in August. People leave Miami in August so they won't melt or struggle to simply breathe.

  32. So clearly the financial issues are still prevalent. I would hope those staff members who were informed their payments would be "delayed" were able to convey that same sentiment to anyone they may owe money to. Sounds to me like the same poor fiscal management that's been going on for years.

  33. No. I know it's hard but try to ignore the negativity and all the armchair corps directors on this site. The Cadets have had to deal with some real issues over the past several years. Issues that would have made other corps cease operations. There a many smart and good people at the helm of the Cadets...they will be fine. And hopefully, they will return the Cadets to an elite corps...and soon!

  38. I’m somewhat over all these side shows A lot of rumors and drive by hit jobs and zero credible direct information so with that said - go Cadets, can’t wait until the 2020 version debuts! I have a feeling they will be something very very special i will personally be supporting, donating, sponsoring and cheering them on in a manner I haven’t done in quite a while!

  42. Out of respect to whence it came, i'll not post anything as more than enough is already out there. and I will say this....for a drum corps, this is the absolute worst time of year financially. End of season bills are rolling in, the big DCI check usually hasn't come in yet.....it can screw up the best intended plans. I'm not defending or condoning the actions, I am just stating it's real, and I also understand the economics of drum corps, especially one trying to dig out of a financial hole. I know, I was trying to help one do that 21 years ago with far smaller numbers than Cadets deal with

  45. The same issues or just similar issues? Pioneer was kicked out of DCI because of how Pioneer leadership responded to complaints. The Oregon Crusaders shut down their corps because of how their leadership was responding to complaints. And everybody keeps saying here that there's at least one more big sexual misconduct shoe due to drop on another corps, but any time the name gets posted, it's promptly deleted because there's no public record yet. (Meanwhile, Tricia Nadolny, now employed at USA Today, had a front page story two weeks ago about harassment in a totally different industry. I wonder if anyone in drum corps breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that.)

  46. IMO if all of these allegations are true, Cadets need a time out to get their house in order and resolve some serious financial and legal matters. These reflect on the whole of the activity, and not in a good way either. Example being Pioneer.

  49. Stop... The goofy "gnashing of teeth" attempt at being dark and menacing. The fashion this year was dark and sinister, and if I had a buck for every time I saw someone squat down and gnash their teeth and try to look overly angsty I'd be driving a new Ferrari to Finals next year. Stop the corny "emoting" and simply play some sinister licks on your instrument instead. Start... Taking and leaving the field like pros. I loved seeing Madison actually MARCH crisply onto the field, and hearing Cavies play off with the always awesome bass cadence Iowa. This is the stuff that makes it feel like the big leagues. Plus it adds extra entertainment and cool factor to the show. More of this, please. Change... the compulsory trombone feature thing. Nothing against the bone, but why must everyone have a trombone solo and feature? Did we really have to change the entire look and vibe of DCI for a slight change in timbre which is used in a very predictable way? Seeing trombones on a DCI field is like seeing a mini van on the grid of an Indy Car race. Now it looks like sousaphones may be the new trombones. Then electric guitar will be the new sousaphone. Eventually maybe this one obscure bright/kinda rude yet awesome sounding horn will make its way into the mix- it is crazy, pitched to key of G, only has a couple valves, super sexy though... a true hammer of the Gods- called a bugle or something like that.

  50. Stop - recorded singing/narration, and the godforsaken corps announcement in the middle of music. I friggin HATE that! Micing soloists standing along the front side line! Start - Requiring the brass ensemble to play at least 75 - 80% of the time. Score higher difficult musical runs (typically a scale that EVERYONE does) while moving. If you can't play it while moving, don't play it at all! Stop - The obligatory section features (that EVERYONE does) Trumpets, now Mid voices, now lower brass, now tuba, wait, there's more, snares, moving on to the multi-toms, lastly basses. Another pet peeve of mine - over written percussion books (some call in 'aggressive'). When it doesn't 'blend' (IMO) with what the brass is doing, it is rather annoying. Like a child that is not getting enough attention who suddenly lashes out. STOP IT ALREADY! Oh, I could go on!
