  2. People are acting like it's something new in the activity. Maybe lets talk about corps ( some ) who NEVER paid people who should have been. Corps that made promises only to make some lame excuses why it never happened, Some of the same corps who ( because of some fortune only in the past several years NOW think they are the play book for how to do things when only a few years ago were doing the same thing. Is it right? Of course not. Should Cadets pony up to their commitment? YES but lets not jump on the Cadets as if many of peoples favorites have been guilty of the exact same thing. When you have been around long enough IN the activity, actively participating, there are plenty of stories to go around . Just sayin

  3. DCI expelled Pioneer in part because their director was recalcitrant when confronted with complaints and referred to whistle-blowers as "snitches". But look at the bright side: at least he didn't call for them to be executed!

  4. Which is what the YEA email stated from the YEA admin to the staff members. They did NOT try and blow off the staff....they acknowledged that they owe them $$$. Is it a good thing to have those cash flow issues? No, but the new YEA team was upfront with their staff members. IMO this should be seen as a positive for the team, not a negstive to roast them over the coals.

  5. I believe some people are just more frustrated because the thought was that a lot of this would change with new people at the helm. While we know change takes a relatively long time to take place, it's important to understand that Cadets need no more controversy given the circumstances. However, I am ALWAYS against giving up. That's not the lesson Cadets taught when I marched and I don't believe many people on this thread who marched there learned that lesson as well. Regardless, I, too, am pleased with the people who are (back) at the helm and although I am reserving any excitement until August, I am hopeful that we will get a competitive product this upcoming season. 6. I was that 3rd baritone tech once, not in drum corps, but the equivalent. I accepted a job at a summer program that was educational in the morning and a camp in the afternoon. It had a goal of helping 5-8th graders improve their reading and math skills and keep them occupied during the day. I was supposed to be paid at the end of the summer, but funding fell through. I was probably the same age at the time as the techs would be today and I had student loans and other bills to pay. Looking back almost 30 years later, I would not trade that experience, but at the time it was a huge hardship. When you’re young and just starting out, every penny counts. For those who want to be of assistance like the 3rd baritone tech who took a low paying position but still expected to be paid, the proper response is “Thank-you,” not “shut up and get a better paying job.” Now to bring it back to drum corps, that job did have a perk. Drum corps who came to the Boston area often were housed at B.C. High or U Mass Boston. So if you marched from 1987-1992 and stayed at either facility, I probably saw you rehearse.

  7. All you have seen from the slip and fall event is what the guy is saying in his filing. Of course he is making it look as bad as possible for YEA!. That is the purpose of what he filed. Nobody really knows what YEA! did and did not do, only what the person alleges to make his own case as strong as he can to try and make a bunch of $$$$. On the payment issue, yes, it stinks that the cash flow is such that some staff have not yet been paid from the 2019 season. Don't forget, what started this is an email FROM the YEA! admin to the staff acknowledging that they owe the people money, and that they will be paying as soon as they can. They were not covering anything up or trying to stiff the tech staff. With USBands season here, my guess is the cash flow aspect will be better in the fall. Just a guess.

  10. “Delayed the payment schedule”. That’s one way to put it I guess. If my employer “delayed the payment schedule” on me, I would be seeking out a new employer. I guess that kind of ‘tude on my part would make me a less than ideal dream corps activity employee. The ideal employee understands that this is a nonprofit activity where corps run on a shoestring budget and pay is low and you understand your pay might be “delayed.” In other words, the ideal employee is either a saint or a sucker.

  11. 1. They are paying people, according to the rumor mill they have delayed the payment schedule. Nothing they have done is "illegal" - it's certainly not great but you're exaggerating 2. Perhaps you missed all my other posts - where I talk about how slow and steady progress on the fiscal front which will take several years to get back on solid ground 3. I hold Cadets to the highest standards - and believe me, I contribute 4. Posting private emails on a website to spread rumors and bad news is not "contributing to a solution" - donating and volunteering is. Are you? 5. Finally PRIOR MANAGEMENT is what got the Cadets in the situation they are in now - not this group. Burned bridges and poor fiscal management have. Damage to the organization's reputation have cost them housing, donations, membership & importantly bands have defected their USB circuit. A lot of work being done on all these fronts to move the ball forward. But please don't blame it on current leadership. G.

  13. Ok now.. Has everyone gotten the "Let's find something else to trash the Cadets with this week "out of their system??? Are we going to have to live through next week ragging and whining about how the brass people had to bring their own toilet paper to ST so they can clean up the crap posted here??? First, it's not any of our X?X?ing business. We have no idea what they are going through nor do we need to know. They need to be working on a show that will bring the house down in 2020. If people need to read about others problems and heartache I wish they would disappear from here until June.

  16. I think it would be neat if they did a Blues Brothers show. There is a lot of great music and artists they can feature, not to mention costuming. An Elvis show would also be a blast! On the other hand, I can see them going back to a concept show like Tilt.

  17. It was nice when I took care of the Tuba section there in 1985. I had a guy from Crossmen and Bucs on the one end of the line and myself on the other. Things got done, everyone else was pretty much told to stay between us, it went well.

  19. I misspoke, my apologies. I’m old. While I stand on what I said about the marching members in the post quoted here I want to address the recently announced staff. I have every faith that Tony, JD, Adam, Jeremy, and Rob will be allowed to create what they feel is a program that not only challenges the performers but is also significantly more competitive than in recent years. This isn’t their first rodeo, so to speak. As for them sticking around? Why wouldn’t they? The fact that they came back to work with Regiment again speaks volumes. I think they want to see the corps return to it’s former glory. I, for one would love to see a ‘93/‘94- like style change. No, not bring back that style but rather bring something new to the table. Adam speaks about it in his recent interview. With Robert Cawthorne i can’t wait to see what’s in the works for Regiment 2020.

  20. Still appears as though some on hear are hoping that the Cadets cease operations...sad. Thankfully the Cadets have a dedicated staff of good people who are ignoring the critics and are committed to moving the corps in a positive direction. Kudos to the good people at the helm of the Cadets!

  21. Okay, but... A drum corps is not a business. It is a non-profit organization pursuing a mission. Oh, we like to talk about how drum corps should aspire to run "like a business", but that comparison only goes so far. Drum corps overextend their operations tremendously in their mission-driven quest to compete. Financially, the typical drum corps overextends about 50% beyond their "business" revenue, making up that difference through charitable donations/gaming. Their labor force is further overextended through liberal use of volunteers. Even when people are paid, it is usually fee-for-service, per-diem, or a very low pay rate... the positions are temporary, contractors... and the people performing them work long and irregular hours without punching a clock. With the exception of the executive director, there are no "employees". People do not work with a drum corps to make a proper living, to strike it rich, or because it is a good "business" - they work with a drum corps because they share in its mission. They are part of that overachieving team striving to compete. Anyone with your attitude should not work for a drum corps. If yours was the prevailing attitude, nearly every corps would cease to exist by Thanksgiving.

  22. WCU had people from Crossmen, Cadets, Westshore, Scouts, Cavaliers, Bucs, Sunrisers, and Royal Guardsmen to name a few when I was there. A lot of very fine people have gone through there. I'm quite proud that WCU has finally got the recognition it's deserved even though it's not an FBS powerhouse.

  24. If there is anything on this site that is the most ridiculous reading, THIS is it. You think it's good to just give up? Is THIS the attitude by which you lead your life? How many people who have marched drum corps live by this attitude? At some point, instead of advocating the complete shutdown of a corps, maybe you should just stop following it and just stop contributing to this thread since you are the "give up" type.

  25. The latter. As for the former, I hope and pray the members of 2019 Regiment learned that their work isn’t done yet. Build on your successes. The organization couldn’t ask for a more dedicated, hard working group of young men and women. Many marched their first year of drum corps, hopefully they will continue their marching experience with the corps who took them into the fold.]

  29. Shes a coordinator, IF it's part of her job,she will also evolve as necessary to be competitive, besides Cadets in the 90s also had some huge props that moved around. If decisions will be hers then you can bet she will do whats necessary

Just sayin CORPS DO NEED TO COMMITT TO THEIR OWN PROMISES AND PAY UP Remember Magic? Ask those who came after bad management who did get them back to success but made promises that were never kept. Many believe had no intentions to keep promises to staff then left their mess to others to clean it up which was almost impossible. Wrong? yes Happen often? YES.....getting better? I think so

  33. Technically, they were tied to Pioneer in the early days - The former Pioneer Indoor now known as Pi Percussion has been based in Romeoville since pretty much their inception. They were using Pioneer's Equipment and buses in the DCI off season to save costs. There was some overlap in staff initially with Adam Hill Serving as Director of the Indoor group and percussion caption head at Pioneer Drum Corps in the early years (2008-2010 maybe?). Fast forward to this past WGI season, Pi Percussion (for good reason) drops the Pioneer name. Shortly after this Pioneer's DCI status is revoked but they still participate in the Southside Irish Parade with the help of alumni and a few students from a local Chicago school taught by a Pioneer alum (not Adam as listed above). There was some momentum captured through this effort which lasted through the summer in the form of a summer parade group (drumline). It seems they are hoping to have a home base in Milwaukee and continue to offer opportunities to the students who have been part of the summer group who are mainly from the Chicago area. This group may be be supported by Pioneer in some way shape or form but guessing that will only be equipment and transportation to shows. A lot can happen in a few months though.

  34. Keep seeing pre-trial hearing and sounds like what an in law got sucked into. Group got sucked into a sting and every time one lawyer filed a motion all had to show up. Finally state plea bargained with all but the two they really wanted so actual trial could proceed. And so other defendants would not go broke paying lawyers when others were filing.

  37. A lot of stuff brought up in this thread is...yeah, whatever. But to brush off not paying someone because they were not actually an employee.....they were a contractor...as if that matters? What, you don’t have to pay a contractor? Was that the point? Hey, if other drum corps are doing this too, as I read here, who are they? Call them out too! They should be called out. So who are they? Maybe these people agreed to or have no problem with a “delayed payment schedule.” That would be the best situation. These would be the “saint” employees errr contractors.

  43. (Snip):Over the last six months, members of The Cadets alumni have created an organization to represent the oldest and most honored Drum and Bugle Corps, The Cadets Alumni Association (CAA). An organization representing all regions of the United Stateas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe is structured to operate well into the future organizing, promoting, and running events of the CAA. The CAA Executive Leadership is teaming with the YEA Executive Team to help promote the October Homecoming Weekend, which we encourage all to attend. link: https://yea.org/news/cadets-alumni-association-formed

Continue: Moving the activity forward by teaching music instead of prop management/staging. Start: Respecting people who are older than you. ( That’s for you Spatzzz) Really. 48. Yes, Yes, Yes! She was such the force of change in colorguard beginning in the late 80s and has had an influence ever since. She may not have been the first to put a guard in uniforms to portray a character, but she led the team that figured out how to do it better than everyone else. Can't wait to see what she does again - sometimes that perspective of being away can add so much more to the work.
