  1. Also...having my DCU and DCI fandoms collide on DCP is getting confusing.

  3. So is Allen Buell on the phone with DCI, cussing them out for talking to a DCA corps about an event during DCI championship week? That is not allowed.

  4. I first met Don in the early summer of 1976 in Atlanta, and quickly realized that he was a show marketing genius. I had just graduated from high school, and our band booster club was sponsoring the first DCI show in the southeast later that summer at Georgia Tech's Grant Field, part of a tour and series of shows that Don was promoting for DCI. I, along with our drum major, were marching that summer with the Birmingham Charioteers, a Class A corps from Alabama. Don flew into Atlanta for a week and he, my h.s drum major and myself spent several days going to all of the TV and radio stations in Atlanta pimping the upcoming Drums Across America show. It must have worked, because 14,000 people showed up at Grant Field to see the Blue Stars, Royal Crusaders, Crossmen, CapitolAires, Sancions, Black Knights, Charioteers and Bleu Raiders. Don later moved to Atlanta and started a very successful parade production company. Rest in Peace, Don. DCI sure could use your expertise now in maximizing the tour model.

  6. We come in Wednesday afternoon. Thursday is the very long day at prelims for us. Friday we don’t go in until a little later. Unless you go to Soundsport on Saturday morning, you basically have all day Saturday to do what you want.

  9. Saw Rolling Stones there around 1990 and plenty of parking. And Metro 🚇 system great for getting around. When sight seeing used to park in Nothern VA and take the subway to where ever (usually the Mall stop).

  10. Byron is well known in the guard world having worked and still working with some really good elite guards. He’s also a designer at FJM so hopefully that’s an added bonus for the guard to standing out more.

  11. Does some of this sound familiar? While I had relatively few major complaints with Flo Marching during the DCI season, the quality of the streams for the BOA Regionals the past two weeks have been...CRAP. Just curious if any of you have had issues of late? https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/10/03/dc-united-severs-ties-with-broadcast-partner-flosports/

  14. Agreed. Our other hobby or interest is gourmet dining and we always manage to find fine dining establishments in most DCI and DCA cites. Another reason for avoiding Indianapolis is its lack of fine dining establishments. The Chicago area, now that's different! And the LA region, including Pasedena . Of course, during our Southwest tour on the way to Allentown, we always find time to dine in Charleston SC!

  15. Why not Ford Field in Detroit. Premier show has work quite well the last couple years with a really nice crowd for that early. Acoustics are not bad as far as hard topped stadiums go..seen hundreds of marching band shows perform there. Logistics are fairly easy in and out of downtown Detroit. Stadium district downtown is really going through a renaissance and river walk is is less than a mile down Woodward. For those that like "culture" the Windsor Ballet is just a quick drive south into Canuckistan.

  17. Many Drum Corps people today Do not attend all the festivities. I know many who also went to DCA and never go to anything but finals, maybe part of prelims. Look at the attendance at some of the things you were at like Alumni Sunday morning. There has been a lot of talk if some things are even worth having anymore and the cost. DCI is no different.

  18. Why was it great? 1. I had hair. 2. I had a cool car to go to rehearsals. 3. Much simpler times. No political correctness, no social media, peer pressure came the old fashioned way( "Hey, try *this*!" ) What pulled me in and kept me there? 1. Travel without Mom in the car slapping me with a fly swatter every time I acted up. 2. The same people I play poker with regularly 40+ years later. 3. I loved playing the snare drum and performing.

  20. Madison- You newbies have no idea how great DCI Finals in Madison was for some of us. Saturday farmer market on Capitol grounds, State Street, I and E in the Frank Loyd Wright Museum, Lake Mendota, That Ice Cream place! Las Vegas- Awesome new indoor stadium, Lot's of inexpensive hotels, great food . Lots of things to do after and before the drum corps shows. It's hot but so what! Chill out by the pool. I spent many years going to Vegas for boxing events. I could show you some places! Atlanta- They really tried to create an amazing drum corps experience there last year. I think the Indy model will fit well there, Coke anyone? Washington DC- City council has plans for a brand new stadium on RFK site. Open class could be held in our new soccer stadium. Museums in DC are free, Lots of great food, Lots of hotels. site seeing is on a level 10. And, if you really take the time to check out the music seen you'll find a very diverse mix. Everything from Country, Bluegrass, hard and punk rock to Hip Hop, RnB, Soul and GoGo Bands.

  24. I attended the DCI BoD meeting in Denver in 1978 when Don was let go. Part of the discussion was in super-secret executive session and some of us waited outside for the "founders" to finish their discussion and vote. You fail to mention that Don is the one who gave us Jackson, MS. plus Birmingham, AL finals sites. Colorful character for sure. DCI was aided in its origin by his efforts for sure.

  25. I remember that tour well. It was also the inaugural stop for Sevierville, TN (in fact, we picked up at least two members after that show). As I recall, every stop had MANY people in the stands and their response to (in many cases, I'm sure) their first drum corps experiences was very enthusiastic.

  27. As a DC United fan, i wasn't as chuffed as some were regarding the Flo contract. Until I tried watching games. Wow. Flo, as an organization, was very not ready for this level of broadcasting. I think it was the first game they were to carry, the entire first half was lost to everyone because, well... we never did learn why. Apologies followed as well as refunds. Things did not improve. Further, the one 'perk' the team expected to get out of it was all the shoulder stuff specifically on DC United. Flo did nothing. I mean nothing on that level for DC United. No real pre/post game analysis, etc. It was like "Hey dude, go to the top row and hold your phone out there for us to stream the game" level of coverage. As much as Flo was rough out of the gate in the first year and a few of covering DCI, they've improved immensely. I got the feeling they were expecting the same leeway with DC United out of the gate or something and yet...it was much worse than their DCI offerings. There is much rejoicing in the DCU boards and places over this. And astonishment and speculation on how DCU got out of the contract effective immediately. One hunch is that Flo was behind on payments, and thus their business model simply can't do this level of the game yet...at all. Speculation on 'where next' mentions none of the TV outlets but likely YouTube TV or some deal with ESPN+ for in market games.

  33. What I enjoy about attending some shows is the “personality” many shows have. Even shows hosted by the same corps can vary a bit. Local shows also feed into larger shows and larger shows feed into local. A few years back I attended NightBEAT and the talk was all Atlanta. If I go to CYO Nationals Tribute, the big question in the stands “What time are you leaving for Allentown?”

  34. Two years ago CT (Cincinnati Tradition) did a Friday show in Johnstown, Pa, after traveling from Cincinnati. A Saturday show in Peckville, Pa. Sunday night, Whitelake Michigan. And a Monday night show in Centerville Oh. We had members from West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Michigan, as well as Ohio. Stldrmn1

  35. And not just "the numbers", but the other side effects of such a change. For instance, fewer/larger shows probably means that lower WC corps will see even more early performance times than they already do. That causes several logistic challenges such as shorter rehearsal days, slower travel in traffic, and earlier housing move-outs and move-ins. One of the advantages of "smaller" shows is that all corps have the full day available for rehearsal, can perform under the lights, and sleep through the trip to the next site.

  36. Dream big. DCI wins every lottery ever held and builds a traveling outdoor stadium. The stadium repels any bad weather. 30,000 hotel rentals always available at each site as well as no pickpockets and plenty of scholastic rehearsal space. Stadium ticket includes complimentary air travel and gratuities. Four town picks: Thermopolis, Wyoming Mackinac Island, Michigan Key West, Florida Crescent City, California

  37. Cleveland is no more dangerous than any other big city. The bulk of the crime in CLE has been on the east side, not downtown. Cleveland is a revamped city experiencing a major renaissance in downtown, and it has amazing suburbs. It is close to Akron and Canton. It's downtown sports facilities are among the best in pro sports. Cleveland is the 2nd largest musical theater district in the country after NYC, and it has one of the finest orchestras in the world. The museum of art is world class, and It's the no. 2 city in the country for medicine and medical research after Rochester, MN. The city's new convention center is state-of-the-art and situated close to Browns stadium. Transportation is good, the streets are wider than the east coast big cities which helps with bus travel, and there is plenty for people to do while also attending drum corps. DCI fans would absolutely love the FLATS, including all the restaurants, clubs, and even a Margaritaville (the only one in Ohio) which is situated in the Flats near the lake. Now having said that, I don't know that I would want Finals in Browns stadium. It's a great stadium for football, but for corps, I'm not sure. But the city itself would surprisingly be better than many would think. The stereotype about Cleveland is just that...a bad stereotype based on issues that happened decades and decades ago. It's the same stereotype that Chicago people have to listen to when the news media beats-up the city over all the killings that seem to happen in one area. For most people, downtown Chicago is awesome, as are the suburbs. Frankly, Cleveland would be better than smaller cities like Buffalo, where housing and hotels can be an issue, and the mega-size cities present their own issues. I think Cleveland would be way better than St. Louis as well. Madison is a unique city. Not overly big, but they love drum corps up there and you do have a big university with a great stadium for Finals. I think Minneapolis would be good. Also, even though we no longer see corps from Canada competing in the states, DCI is international and going to Toronto or Montreal again would be cool.

  38. OK, unless the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce starts paying me I’m going to stop responding.......... Pasadena hosted finals in 2007(?) and somehow all the corps managed to get where they needed to go and showed up on time. Yes, there’s “traffic” but you allow for it. It’s not a reason to not host finals. What IS a valid reason is the cost of renting out the Rose Bowl, and the fact it’s not central to the USA.

  39. The idea is to grow the activity. And with 10 million people in the greater LA area, the media capital of the world, where is the best location to host finals in terms of return on investment and long term growth? It ain’t Whitewater.
    1 point
  40. No one can deny L.A. traffic, but if you stay in or near Pasadena traffic isn’t an issue especially on Saturday night when finals are held. The Rose Bowl may be cost prohibitive for DCI, I don’t know, but a change in venue is overdue. Who wants to keep going to Indianapolis? It could also inject some life-blood into the Southern California drum corps scene. Besides the Kingsmen and Velvet Knights, when’s the last time a corps from So Cal made finals?

  41. What's wrong with the Rose Bowl every year (ucla notwithstanding - ugh)? It's obviously not centraly located, but it's a beautiful location, it will never get rained out, old town Pasadena is fun, plenty of practice and housing options, and its near a large metropolitan city with lots to do besides drum corps (i.e. beach, Disneyland, etc.) And before you say it.......B.D. are going to win at least every other year anyway.

  46. When thinking of sites, keep in mind rehearsal sites and rehearsal conditions. For about a week. It isn't ALL & ONLY about you; the fans. I could go with: Pasadena, Denver, Indianapolis, Boston. I think these are located in somewhat easily accessible areas that would draw good crowds and offer things for non-drum corps activities.
