You had those snappy teal uniforms well before wearing teal became a thing. DCP mod MikeD who marched Garfield Cadets drumline has said many times on DcP how smart your unis were, even if the Bensonhurst source of the financing was intriguing, ha. ha.3 points

BITD most of us weren't music or dance majors..we were happy just to be able to perform, period..Times have changed(obviously) and the performers, as you have outlined, are reflective of that change..peace3 points

Maybe it's just me, but i think it is ignorant and hateful to suggest that only (or to imply that all) people from a certain age group are ignorant and hateful.2 points

This is true BUT to say everyone was happy with what they wore even BITD would not be accurate either ( plenty of examples of that, as Im sure there are those today). Bottom line is respect for those of the past and what " We" did should be a given BUT that should apply to performers, etc etc of today and what they do. There are those who don't get respect is a 2 way street NOT a one way one.2 points

Just throwing it out there...but with the tradition that is SCV's cymbal line, long before Rennick was there, could it be that he wants them...or that he has no choice but to have them? Just a thought.2 points

Exactly right and many kids dont march because of it. There is no cool factor anymore...no bad a55 unis.2 points

First... let me start off by saying I am continually amazed and how much the activity has progressed over recent years, the technical ability, musicianship athleticism and sheer creativity is amazing. In spite of all of this, there is one glaring trend that I might suggest is going very much down the wrong path. A break from the past here is certainly needed, but this can't be the right direction. Uniforms... Frankly speaking, guys are just trying too hard and can't seem to completely break away from some sort of pseduo-military element of the past that makes it feel even more awkward. The end result is something that seems so out there to the uninitiated, to the point where it seems kind of amateurish. What is most strange is that all are sort of moving very much in the same sort of waves (something old, something new, something borrowed, something half and half, etc.). Everything is a mashup, rather than a concrete or cohesive idea. What is wrong with simple? What is wrong with a wide range of possibilities out there? Why does everyone need to follow a trend vs. putting something out there that makes both programatic sense and is appropriate to the type of movement guys out there are doing? The roots of this trend are in WGI, more specifically winter percussion, where pretty much everyone (with some very recent and breakout exceptions) is wearing Star Trek pajamas. How did this happen? Where did this come from? Most of these things look like those velour jumpsuits my grandpa used to wear back in the day. Nothing about this is remotely connected with this decade and needs to change. Anyway, we're stuck in this sort of loop (is it the manufacturers driving this and influencing this, having to put out something so attention getting each year?) and there needs to be some fresh horses and new exploration and more diversity. Rather than designs that are force-fit to be marching bandish.... something completely clean... from zero... re-imagined? Rather than starting with a traditional military influenced uniform and deconstructing, start from more dance and athletic wear foundations and build up from there? While we're at it... it is time for these silly ski bib pants to go. There is no body shape out there that this looks good on... also, costuming needs to be considered in the full context of the performance, which is wherever people are hanging out watching you do stuff. Watching guys warm up in bib pants is silly. On the topic... shoes. With so much revolution going on out there in the athletic shoe world (and drum corps is athletics from the neck down) we're still out there wearing souped up nurses shoes? Really? Bottom line... guys out there are trying way too hard. Seems like it is the manufacturers driving this... it isn't helping to make things more accessible, not at all. Time to go back to the drawing board... everyone tabula rasa with a build up, rather than tear down approach and hopefully the result will be something that is not only contextually relevant, but movement appropriate and a little less awkward for the general public.1 point

Keep seeing “Color Karma Corps” and now have that #### song “Karma Chameleon “ in my head....🥵1 point

Correct. They will be on G for some time. (2 valve). Pretty sure Truman Crawford made sure they would never play fully chromatic instruments.1 point

I remember the combined horn lines playing warmup exercises and whatever else they could think of quickly that everyone knew. LOL. That was a fun thing to see!1 point

I agree.... those, the Cadets' classic uni, and the ones used by the OLPH Ridgemen in NYC. A beautiful blue and red.1 point

I will now add that word to my lexicon in case it eventually appears on the S.A.T.s or A.C.T.s or Graduate Record Exam. 🙂1 point

That was 1989 DCA finals and it was FUN! I wore one of Cru's Phantom of the Opera face masks! We were trading uniform parts, flags... what a good time that was! Then in 1990 at Cru's show, we tied again!1 point

Given that Regiment didn't have a cymbal line when he was there, I suspect that decision is organizational rather than personal.1 point

Since marching has been replaced by dance (essentially); what was the process that Martha Graham or Merce Cunningham used in consultation with their costume designers in bringing costume relevance to modern dance..Seems to me that with limited suppliers corps might be afraid to go truly "outside the box" exploring more simplistic alternatives...freedom of movement and show relevance can still be attained without everyone "glitzed up"...As long as the costumes are relevant to the theme, let the music once again be the focal point of the show..Note: I no longer refer to drum corps wear as uniforms...except for Madison last season...All the above is IMHO..peace1 point

No front-sideline "area" microphones, though. I hope they never go that route. They are plenty loud enough.1 point

well even Rennick thinks they are worthy, so there's that for ya. he only has how many Sanfords in the last 15 years? like half of them?1 point

Flourishing? In what way? Chicago 1988 and 1989: there were more people at a soccer game next to where the DCA sanctioned senior drum corps show was being held. Dayton 1989: More people in the corps on the field, than fans in the stands. I don't think that's flourishing. I don't think that even showed a potential to "flourish". I think those shows were failures, in terms of exposure and revenue.1 point

With all due respect, I wonder if Michael Cesario has too much involvement with too many corps creating a more uniform look throughout I strongly dislike many of the WGI uniforms but they are form = function so what might work in a gym on 30 people would never work on a football field for 100 plus – someone will make that mistake soon Often, after a big uniform change, it take the visual staff a year to create a drill that works better for that uniform1 point

Drum solo absolutely stunk, if you listen to it with a critical ear. In KAC 2005-2007 I marched alongside one of BD 81’s rookie lead baritones (great guy) and on one of our bus rides I asked the “what happened?” question since I was in the stands (you could hear the dirt up there) that night. He chalked it up to a stupid level of overconfidence (“everyone in the corps thought we had the 3-peat in the bag, no problem”) and an “unauthorized vocal” that took place at the end of opener. The way he described it, “my spot at the end of opener was just steps away from the DL behind me. We’re just nailing T.O....last note, horns snap down....and then I heard people in the DL behind me say something in unison under their breath....the judge whirled around, because he heard it....I knew at that moment we were screwed; there went our ring.” He went on to say the judge was in the DL’s face for the rest of the show, and they caved. The guy went into the military even though he had another year left.0 points
