  1. I'm really sick of this "I've got a secret" crap on here. This corps has been through hell lately. Enough with the innuendos.

  2. Heh... watched an Air Force football game a few week back... the other team called a timeout to "ice" the Air Force kicker before a field-goal attempt. The announcer said, "This young man is training to fly fighter jets... I'm not sure something like a timeout in a football game will really rattle him." 🙂

  4. I’m with you. After going through the crucible, I don’t think a G-bugle is gonna scare them off. 😂

  6. Since this thread has wandered to the Commandant's Own, here was their gig tonight!

  7. Just can’t see someone wanting to be a Marine and be in the D&B corps and then say “oh you play G... never mind”. Never served but worked with and under “Marines no longer in uniform”. Terri taught me that “ex-Marine” is not a real thing... “once a Marine always a Marine”

  8. I do not think that the use of G bugles in the Commandant’s Own is really that pressing an issue for those in the corps any more than playing fifes rather than flutes and piccolos is for the Army’s Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Military musical units are ceremonial and tradition plays a key role in what they do. Since being in the Commandant’s Own is a privilege, where it is a public face of the Marines, I don’t think too many Marines would say no and believe learning to play a G Bugle is a burden. Those in the Marines have survived boot camp and in many cases combat.

  10. My son made the callback camp for Bluecoats last year, but just missed the cut for a contract. He was contacted by at least four other WC corps immediately, and ended up contracting with a fifth corps and performed on Saturday night. The Coats cut list was obviously shared far & wide.

  13. Late 1990s, a friend with the Marine D&B Corps asked me if I would be interested in being the staff announcer for the corps..."Of course, you have to go through Marine basic training, then be assigned to the Barracks..." After hearing those words "basic training".... I politely declined. I knew he had to be busting my chops!!! LOL

  14. I’d settle for real and info to back it up.... unlike a certain thread on DCA side that OP did a drive by and never followed up

  15. Had the AF Academy corps at the Forum show in the late 70s and loved talking to them. We were about the same age so I’d get kidded “hey we need Baris, but you have to shave the beard off”. 😬Every time I’d go away thinking “thank God there are people willing and able to do what they do... and we have them”. one year they sat in the planes for couple hours waiting for a ten minute window of calm winds to be able to take off (nasty windy weather that year). other year “any problems getting here”. “No but one of the planes lost a windshield over Kansas”. 😲

  16. It's an issue. Keeping those bugles functioning has cost more than the cost of the new line of Yamaha's. Quality of sound is not keeping pace with quality of design.

  17. Nope... I think that show is gone for good. Regardless of key. LOL. Last year was 2011 in Annapolis. I had the privilege of announcing it, the years it was in Annapolis, from 1999 on. What a cool gig!!!

  20. and til the end.... ex-project leader buried in his dress blues with Marine League doing ceremony night of viewing. Anyone who knew him or worked with him saw the dress blues and thought “no surprise”. wish Jim a happy Veterans Day. DoD Agency where I work has a Wall of Honor for veterans. Have my dad (Korea, Army Corps of Engineers) up there

  21. Ask your hubby what the slang is for the equipment they use.... Thinking “G bugle is just another tool” but not sure if tool is the correct term. sigh could have asked my ex-project leader (5” 4’ 140 lbs Marine) but he passed last year. He followed corps as his daughter was in Cadets until asthma stopped that mid season.

  22. that has not really been an issue at all.

  23. Drum corps can i deed have WW if DCI votes that they are legal. But you are right....as of today drum corps does not have WW. Why should WW players be limited to changing the instruments they chose to study? If DCI permits WW, then they won't have to start all over. Percussion and Brass players don't have to switch to a different instrument. No, clarinets will never make the BD "hornline". But, hopefully some day they will be able to make the BD woodwind section.

  25. wish this show would have been given a visual design worthy of the performers. still one of my favorite horn books from TeamCream. full brass entrance in ballad is just so tasty.

  26. Several years ago Under Armour refused a request by DCI to co-brand some athletic wear, stating that drum corps is not an image that fits their market focus. I can imagine the jockstraps in their Board room now: "Stupid band kids. Do we really want to dilute our image with a bunch of band kids?" I've refused to buy their gear ever since, and have even rejected gifts of their stuff based on their attitude towards drum corps. I'm more than a little surprised that so many drum corps MM's and fans wear the UA logo. To me it's crap if it's too good for band kids. Nothing has made me happier than to see their stock price get slammed due to lower earnings and the realization that the "Athleisure" market they helped create is not immune to the competition of the market. To he11 with Under Armour, the stock, and the bus they rode in on, IMO. This is the prettiest picture: From a high of about $53 in October, 2015 to just over $20 today... Maybe if they include some band kids in their marketing their sales would would look better, eh? (disclaimer: this is not an endorsement, recommendation, or offer to buy or sell UA stock. The opinion expressed here is mine alone and does not represent the opinion of DCP, DCI, UAA, or my company. Past performance is not indicative of future results. Wash behind your ears and wear clean underwear, so long as it's not UA.)

  28. I would bet an even larger amount of money that the Blue Coats will have no one to audition. Now, the Bluecoats, may.

  29. I don’t expect that the top 6 will have any recruitment problems. If anything, it will be quite competitive. SCV is not a shoe in for the top three, and Crown, BAC, and Cavies will be hoping for a medal. Regarding Cavies and the death of Don Warren, I’m not sure it would have all that much of an impact on recruitment. Regarding Cavies being the only remaining all male corps and gaining young men who would have auditioned for Madison, that’s hard to tell. In Indy I sit with some seasoned Madison folks, mostly alumni, and there are some concerns regarding talent going elsewhere, but Cavies was not mentioned specifically. My hope for Cadets is that by making it affordable to audition (travel expenses only), they will attract talent. In our world of arm chair quarterbacking, it’s easy to say last year was an off year, but kids deciding where to march may need more convincing. For a long shot prediction, I am thinking Pacific Crest could have a good audition season. This past year’s show was enjoyable which is nothing new for the corps, but it had a certain sophistication to it and an upward trend is a possibility.
