  1. I believe the reason for so many pages has more to do with people drawing a line in the sand. Most of the changes in drum corps over the years can truly be defined as "evolution" in one way or another. Adding woodwinds to drum corps is not evolution, it is a change in format. That may be a bridge too far for many and they will add their names to the list of those who leave.

  2. And what - you think that is off-topic? When the topic is "leaving the activity because of... "?

  3. Hi Keith, This OP has read each reply with interest. While I don't intend to return to the Ogden Event I have considered how to selectively participate to bring some of my (perhaps wrong) understanding of how to add reinforcement to a sound. I operate on the premise that you can't reinforce a sound unless you can record the sound. What I mean is to accomplish the 2 tasks separately. First learn how to record a certain sound. Second premise is you can't reinforce a sound unless you can playback the recorded sound. I think it is a ratcheted learning experience..., if you get better at recording you get better at playback, you get better at recording and so on. You need to separably record each thing you desire to reinforce. Reinforcement is not the same as record/playback, but lessons learned in record/playback are useful for reinforcement. I think that "recorded music is like canned sushi", in fact I made lapel buttons with that quote of mine for a 2000 convention. You can't do it!, really it can't be done. But there is a huge difference between pet food and Albacore. With the IsoMike experiments I simply wanted to get closer to Albacore. Next, work out how to reinforce a single sound before moving to reinforcing more than a single sound.

  6. D. C. = Don Cherry? (I hear his new job has already been signed-on as a consultant with a well known uniform/costume mfg. for the marching arts.)

  7. on the flip side to the smaller-than-desired Veterans Day event - a large number of US Bands contest were "full" this season that said - the damage inflicted by GH mater was only heightened by the thin ice YEA was treading on under his leadership none of should be surprised thus will take several seasons to rectify

  8. I have to chuckle at Social Media and especially DCP! A person says that they are leaving the activity because of issues in drum corps (DCI) and soon after (93 plus pages) it has changed to marching band and WW. LOL

  9. Could be they're going to announce that they paid all their staff and suppliers for last year. One can hope, right?

  10. It has happened, not just in Texas. Here in NJ, as far back as the late 60's through the 70's the Herald News Band Festival was held in Clifton NJ on 3 Tuesday evenings in October, with about 15 bands per evening. More recently, we competed during the week when a USBands championship got rained out from the weekend. In that case, some bands did end up dropping out.

  12. Yes. 2019 La Kermesse parade was June 21st. 2020 parade is in the works. Festivalsnet often has the info in advance. Portland in Maine PressHerald today had a follow-up photo and video of the revived Biddeford marching band in yesterday's Portland in Maine parade.

  14. This is beginning to mirror the discussion on that other thread analyzing whether DCA will last another 5 years. Or as another site put it: Will DCA last another 5 years if not discussed on DCP by Pennsylvanians?

  16. Or, perhaps it would take only one. Sell USBands and refocus on the functional center of the YEA! universe. If what you say is true, and no doubt it is, it's reasonable to presume that all of YEA!'s programs suffer from bloat and self-importance without concomitant revenue or operational efficiency. I wouldn't be surprised if the BoD decides it's time to streamline to save the biggest component of the org.

  17. But those involve moving finals back from Labor Day weekend. I'd agree that there definitely would be more options if they take that step, but if they stay married to that particular weekend, then the amount of top-tier venues greatly diminishes.

  20. Buckle up it's going to get bumpy ! Currently six of DCA's competing Thirteen Corps are from west and south of the Allegheny Mountains. The Mid-West and South can rightly lay claim to DCA's major growth area. Costs to compete in the "DCA CORRIDOR" for us are in $20,000 (plus or minus a thousand or two) range per trip. I would offer that it's time to rethink the whole I-95 approach, and possibility move West to an I-79 venue. Much more doable for Drum Corps fans that want support their local Mid-West and Southern Corps, and much cheaper for non I-95 Corps to attend. Without the Mid-West, and South, DCA's pretty much a seven corps circuit. The answer to "Will DCA Be Around in Five Years" lies in can DCA embrace growth, and compromise a little. Rumblings are that there may be one or two more Mid-West organizations considering moving into DCA in 2020. Regards, Stldrmn1

  21. Legion, VFW, AMVETS, Jewish War Veterans...etc. The Greatest Generation saved the planet (again, just like their fathers had a generation before), came home, gave us their Drum Corps. Lucky us. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/2017/11/inside-the-arc-horns-drums-gratitude/

  23. My apologies, I didn't have much to go on at the time other than "keep an ear out." Since then, my source divulged that this info does NOT have as much of an impact on the 2020 edition of The Cadets directly, but certainly has potentially big ramifications both long and short term for various YEA programs.

  24. My son made the callback camp for Bluecoats last year, but just missed the cut for a contract. He was contacted by at least four other WC corps immediately, and ended up contracting with a fifth corps and performed on Saturday night. The Coats cut list was obviously shared far & wide.

  27. YES it was distinct BITD BUT what made it distinct was also corps were wearing the same thing year after year. Often some corps played the same music year after year also. To me that's more cookie cutter. How many corps sported the cadet type uniform just in different colors..many Not that everything new is good and that can go back to the beginning of time, looking through fresh eyes or even at times forcing ones self to honestly look at things from another perspective is NOT a bad thing. Not everything will please everyone all the time, nor should it. If it did how would we have our favorites.

  28. Not slamming anyone but having flashbacks to AM radio years back and daily bit of Mr Manly. Always had a bit of the manly thing to say to women per the “Manly Manual”. And ended with something like “and when the doctor asks how a drink umbrella ended up in your nose you know what kind of manly man you are”.

  32. theres a few reasons for why they are disappearing. because they are dying off ( ok being killed) the amount of skilled people that can teach them with true skills is diminishing also, not enough judges actually have the true knowledge to credit them too many people have zero understanding the textures, sounds and effects marching cymbal lines can give you that a cymbal on a stand or the occasionally picked up pair of cymbals in the pit can do and finally because visual demands rule the activity, even if music suffers.

  35. So what's basically coming out of all of this discussion is that no college venue is going to be feasible due to football schedules, unless DCA gives up Labor Day weekend. Gotta say that leaves very few options...

  36. I'm obviously a Cavaliers homer, but I do believe that two things will have their numbers up this year. You already mentioned Don Warren. But added to the equation is the Cavaliers touring California last year, and getting amazing crowd reaction throughout that tour. I don't think it's accidental that Cavaliers have a Los Angeles audition this year that they haven't had since my son got involved 3 years ago. I also think them closing out the year 3rd in brass will pay some dividends. I haven't talked to my kid about this...I have no idea what kind of registration they are doing. I do know that he will be at BOA Grand Nationals in Indy recruiting...something else I'm not sure they've done regularly in the past ( but could definitely be wrong about).

  37. I think they'll be too busy trying to pay off renting AT&T Stadium in Dallas for a band show today (a Monday and national holiday??) with only 16 bands in attendance. Probably not the wisest move for an organization trying to get back on track financially IMO.
