  1. First, we don’t know if we’re dealing with a fact or a rumor regarding the 55 member rule. I also do not recall Encorps having 80 members it’s first year out. I could be wrong and I am relying on memory, but 80 seems a bit high. 50 seems on target for 2019. My guess would be the 55 member rule is based on finances and is not an attempt by DCI to be rid of Encorps. I’d also be careful about announcing a Corps is folding when the corps has not made the announcement. Perhaps you have inside information, but many of us have inside information from reliable sources, we repeat what we hear on DCP, but it happens to be the one time our source is wrong, and we find ourselves with egg on our faces.

  2. OMG! The flags are spinning again! OMG! Did you you see that rifle toss? Was that a company front?!? Did that trumpet just nail a high G? Never saw anything like it! Not since the last band, anyway.

  3. Overproduction. Yes. Such a good term to describe it. I was watching about five minutes of BOA today (that’s all I could handle). The body contortions adding absolutely nothing to the music other than simultaneous demand, which somehow became a perceived must.... just unwatchable. The soundtrack in the background. The way over the top emoting. It’s hard not to laugh. It’s become so silly.

  4. We thought so too, my friend! It's part of our "9-11" history (that most of us geezers take pride in) - much like CV's old motto..."We finish 9th so YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!!"

  5. despite 100000000000 misconceptions about the cost of drum corps, the costs rose because of: food, fuel, housing and insurance.

  7. Revamped Cadets Bluecoats -They were Excellent the last two years, Should have won last year. Crown- How do you get the judges to respect your visual program when you march more than almost every top corps? Vanguard- Just one year removed from gold. They can do it again. Cavaliers- When the Cavaliers are good, they scare everyone. Boston- Waiting for them to take that next step. Spirit-This is the year they make finals! Hopefully.

  9. I listened to as much as I could of the BOA show today while working. I have no idea who/what where/when I heard. Some of the corps were as expected for high school band. Some of them blew my mind, it was wonderful! Can’t wait for the next two days. I agree there is a lot of over production. But I still love it and do think it will eventually swing in the other direction. Really looking forward to the release of 2019 videos and to the upcoming season of Winterguard. Starting to watch old shows on YouTube in anticipation : )

  15. I know a place in Southwest VA that has a wonderful site and is not tied to a college. In fact, they host a DCI show every year right after Night-Beat. Just thinking outside the box. https://www.visitroanokeva.com/listings/salem-football-stadium/6081/

  18. however, those two circuits primarily ran in the same region as DCA, usually in the smaller towns. if they run stuff outside of the NE, different ballgame. They have to build their markets though. I have asked at least a hundred times over the years what do shows outside the NE draw, and never ever get any kind of concrete answer. You can't depend on the DCI fanbase to instantly flock to a product they really don't know. notice how marketing plays an overwhelming role in everything?

  19. That would work too. I want to buy a contra (I play electric bass), not that it would be great for a blues / classic rock gig. Just to play and maybe do brass caroling during Christmas. But $9k....

  20. Sounds similar to a circa 1970s festival run by the Home News in central NJ at the old Rutgers Stadium. A bunch of bands, and only a few of them were competition-style. And the announcer... I think he might have been a longtime staffer at the Home News... he would talk during the bands' performances. "If you see something you like, give 'em a hand!!!"... stuff like that. LOL.

  21. Forgot about that different sheets and judges bit. RCA was easier on execution for obvious reasons. Did both circuits a few years and whole different mindset. can still her Hershman screaming “it’s a DCA show this time, execute bleep it execute” MBI and Chicago Connection... everyone’s favorite 11th and 12th place Corps late 70s. If they would have had some DCA judging earlier it would have been real interesting. Now I know why we did judged exhibition if possible so we could get the sheets and tapes

  23. I agree... the friendships/relationships. Old friends, and new friends. Even catching up for a just a few minutes, or waving hello from afar to a familiar face. When I worked the DCA title shows all those years... I would try to spend a minute or two with some of the older folks who ran the circuit, ran the corps, or just were familiar faces... because I never knew if that would be the last time I saw some of them.

  24. Did community college and state school to afford it in the late 70s. Look at the cost of doing that now and whole different (sad) world. Just no comparison

  26. I was an MP from 1978-81 and a K9 Handler. My last 2 years I was stationed at Seneca Army Depot on SRT and RF. 1985-88 I was a chaplain's assistant and the only thing I got to do was protect the chaplain from doing dumb things LOL

  27. You forgot the word "rich" as in "rich college-student activity" with drum corps tuitions at the $5K mark annually and non-State school tuitions above $50K annually before room and board.

  31. It's refreshing to read the comments from veterans on the discounts they received yesterday, and SHOULD receive on a daily basis. As a son of a member of the US Navy for 25 years (15 active, 10 reserves) I know my dad takes great pride in that day, and you all have earned everything coming to you, and more! Thank you for your service.

  39. I can already tell you the schedule because it is in a rut: It will start late June. Several Corps will be at midwest premier; a day or so later west coast premier will happen. A Corps or two from east or midwest will head to CA as part of the tour. The west coast tour will leave CA by the first week of July (no more DC for you CA!) toward San Antonio (with a stop for some in Denver & / or Casper), as will the midwest tour. Corps will gradually be added until they all reach San Antonio. After that, one - three groups of Corps will follow the usual rut (oops, I mean route) to Atlanta, then north to Allentown, followed by the usual convergence in Indy.

  40. a rather interesting strategy is posting for the first time to say "goodbye" take care! Things change, it's called life. I preferred the acoustic activity in G - loud as crap and FANTASTIC, but we haven't had that since 1999 for me the core (pun intended) of the activity has always been about the member experience and life lessons learned by the mm - it's not really about "us" IMO

  41. Sorry you feel this way. But those are your feelings and you are more than entitled to them. I am sure the kids who are the musicians you speak of, and some pretty good ones too, will also miss your support no matter how selfish, imo that it comes across. This activity is for the kids who participate, and not so much there specifically to entertain some old farts like many of us are. I include myself in that sometimes. They are there because it is a new generations activity and is not there to appease the whims of others who wish the puppy would remain a puppy. I have found myself swing back and forth from time to time ,wishing DC could be what it was. Then I watch what it is, I listen to what it is and then I look back and see what I thought was good, and realize it is not as good as what I see today. I hear amazing musicians. I see incredible artistry with guards and drill writers and show designers. I see talent I could not even dream of BITD. There are flaws. Always have been, always will be. But the current product is tremendous. Lots of props, sure but eventually that will subside and regress. It may have to for the activity to sustain. The self-discipline taught to MM's, could be learned by organizations themselves. Sorry to see you go. The activity will go on without you and you will miss a lot of really good stuff. I have learned to enjoy it for what it is. It is still unique and worthwhile and most of it entertains the crap out of me.

  42. Something is fishy here. Encorps came out 2018 as a Soundsports Unit with about 80 members. They marched less for 2019. It's 2020 and they decided to fold because they marched less than 55 members in 2019. I don't get it!!! For 2020, try recruiting more members. What about 2018 when you marched about 80 members? I'm missing something!!!
