  1. "Captain, how soon can you land?" "I can't tell." "You can tell me. I'm a doctor." "No. I mean I'm just not sure." "Well, can't you take a guess?" "Well... not for another two hours." "You can't take a guess for another two hours?"

  3. how is there irony in people reminiscing about loud acoustic brass, but not wanting "wergleoooooooozzzzzzzhrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmm" blasted through a mic at the same or greater volume? i think that shows a lack of understanding of the word "irony". is this one of those things like tweens calling anybody of any age over 20 who doesn't agree with them "boomer" even though boomers are in their 70s, or constantly using "literally" to mean "figuratively"? what's the world coming to, lol?

  4. Could be wrong here... but from what I recall, one of the first podiums was used by DCA's Hawthorne Caballeros, circa 1970. Jim Russo, who took over as Cabs' lead drum major in 1970, was not as tall as his predecessors... Chuck Bishop and Ralph Silverbrand.

  5. Something like that, though it would also set a fairly problematic precedent. I mean, at a certain point, rules have to be enforced, or they're not really rules.

  6. Hear, hear! I cursed their entire production under my breath last year except for percussion. But I can't wait for the "Bocook book". (See what I did?) #VintageCadets

  7. Boomer here, along with my older brothers and sister... and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews scattered throughout Gen X to Gen Alpha. My mom and a good chunk of the Irish side of our family grew up in Bayonne, NJ. Generation Bayonne was another story altogether.

  8. That one is great. I think it's their 1979 show... in about a one-minute span near the end, they do three classic Troopers visuals... the Sunburst, the rifles around the drum major, and the rifle toss over the flags. And the audience is going nuts!!!

  9. i'm 43, and have always thought of myself as gen x/y because Xennial sounds stupid. we're an interesting group because we had roughly equal amounts of our life with and without the internet. i was part of the last class at my school that learned to type on an actual typewriter, too. that was my senior year of high school when not everybody even needed to know how to type because again, no internet. also, i like loud acoustic brass, but i don't like mic'd up amp cheese. okay boomer.

  10. May I suggest: Lead & section Players in Big Bands. Principal & Section Players in Symphony Orchestras. My good friend is a touring Lead Player & Broadway Pit Orchestra musician, MANY large crowds. Most would not consider his acoustically-earned six figure salary to be in the "broke" category.

  12. I’ve heard some things. In my eyes, the most important thing is the survival of The Cadets.

  14. Unless, of course, the natural acoustic sound is indoors and manages to overpower the indoor acoustics themselves. Drums are especially bad, since their sound is omni-directional. Bugles and drums are for outdoors.

  15. Hmmm. Cavies aren't going to change their status. They already have two other co-ed groups in their organization.

  17. Natural acoustic sound is fine. Amplification with its unnatural, distorted sound and is what destroys hearing. I've always felt that drum corps contests should be about wind and muscle, not electrons. Don't we get enough electrons from everything else? The loss of bugles was a shame, but the irresponsible decibel arms race is just unhealthy.

  19. Yes - OC schedules aren't generally a one-sided affair, such as "you shalt do this show" or "we are doing 28 shows, find us some." In my experience, DCI been very accommodating in creating the lineups. In 2018 they asked us to add a swing through the south so that they could run a set of early season OC tours. It worked for us, though it added an extra week to our tour. In 2019 we asked to not do those again due to the structure of the tour we were planning, and DCI was ok with that too. We were going to lobby them for 2020 for a particular set of early shows that would get us with more OC groups and a big early season test; not sure how that worked out since I'm not with them this year, but DCI is open to that sort of give-and-take. Based on previous conversations with our director, it was always a fairly rapid process. Mike

  20. We marched all over except for concert. Had to march in 65 during concert since we started closer to the sideline, then marched to another location further back for the next minute or so.

  21. And then there were those drum majors who marched ON the box podium and created an audible "THUMP" to keep time with every footfall. 1980's BlueDevils had a huge, hollow wooden box that resonated like a Buick.

  23. TBH, I'd agree to "just as loud" but would prefer the term "different" to "better"

  24. Yep...and when some of the drum majors (the Troopers come to mind) actually marched part of the show. There would have been a hole in the Sunburst without the DM in there. LOL

  27. A strong come back is a good story, but it does not excuse the false narrative that was conveyed in the announcement When deception defines the moment, you don't get a free pass to victory. It's most upsetting they thought this would fool anyone, and it disrespected the alumni and their present staff.

  29. I'm a cynic,so forgive me. Seems to me,the fact that its this difficult to find out if YEA operates the Cadets, should set off a whole bunch of red flags. Just from the posts on DCP I would also think that YEA is aware of the questions. Shouldn't be anything stopping them from contacting DCI and giving them the answer.

  33. It's interesting that the chart shows the "Greatest Generation", a term I have always understood to mean the generation who fought in WWII, ending with those born in 1924. That means that lots of WWII vets born in 1925-1927 (the latter being 18 years old in 1945) are considered to be members of the next cohort. One WWII vet of note died yesterday at the age of 95: Christopher Tolkien, son of the famous author, and editor/publisher of a host of his father's posthumous works (most famously The Silmarillion in 1977).

  41. I had no recollection of them saying that, so I went back to the announcement on DCI.org. Not one word about needing to attract enough members. Lots of other justification ( principles, diversity, non-discrimination) but nothing about - hey, we’re having trouble attracting members. Actually, had they said just that, I think there would have been a lot less pushback. Because the way they’ve packaged it seems very disingenuous to me.

  43. I don't see where the Cavs are not doing the right thing. Ridiculous to suggest they they are in the wrong. They have always been, and continue to be a male organization. The same was true of MS. Where was all this righteous rumbling when all girl corps were present? If the intent of MS inclusion was to distract, it worked magnificently.

  44. As long as the corps agree to not smuggle their directors out of the country in a Contrabass case...they might even get additional reeds thrown into the deal.

  48. I usually don’t post on forums but I would like to counter some of the negativity being posted here about the Cadets. I am a retired music educator and a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Admin staff. I have also been assisting the Cadets administratively in the office and at their winter camps since I reside in Pennsylvania and have worked in the past with Denise Bonfiglio, Cadets corps director and Michele Teevan, Cadets Operations Manager while they were with SCV. Here are my observations: The corps took possession of a brand new set of Yamaha brass at their December camp in Salem, New Jersey. I would know since i personally inventoried each horn. At the winter camps I have had the opportunity to observe the educational staff and their interaction with the prospective members and I am impressed with their professionalism and the quantity and quality of their instruction. There is a lot of good teaching taking place. I am also impressed with the commitment and work ethic of the volunteers and members of the Cadets Volunteer Association, Many of these people no longer have students in the Cadets but they continue to volunteer because of the love they have for the corps, and for each other. Denise Bonfiglio, Corps Director and Ron Lambert, Assistant Corps Director personally addressed the prospective members and expressed their commitment to returning the Cadets to their rightful place among the upper echelon of DCI Michele Teevan, Operations Manager and Justin Moore, Director of Operations are super organized and are doing their best to make sure everything is in place at camps so the prospective members have a positive and enjoyable Cadets experience. I heard many vets, volunteers, and instructional staff comment Positively about how organized and professional the camps are being run compared to previous years. I was also impressed with the “show and tell” that was presented at the December Camp. The corps performed a few minutes of the opener and although I cannot divulge any information concerning the 2020 production I will sum the opener up with one word, tempo. The brass sound great playing a Jay Bocook horn book and the percussion will not disappoint. I think the 2020 corps will give people who have “fallen out of love” with the Cadets the past few years the opportunity to fall back in love with them. Right now they need the support of the drum corps community and less negativity. End of rant
