That was exactly how I felt - zero interest but then couldn’t get over the parallel to drum corps3 points

They have all they need now for a successful season provided good decisions come down from the executive level. The DCI world awaits.3 points

Madison has had a difficult time retaining vets for a few years now. Cavies was a destination corps for many years, lost that status a bit around 2012 or so, but around 2016 earned that status once again. Maybe it’s the brotherhood/all male atmosphere of Cavies that has attracted former Madison Scouts, but I would wonder if four years of top six placements, with each year being rather competitive, has more to do with it than anything else.3 points

Here I’ll take a stab at a new mission statement: hard work, pursuit of excellence, and memories for a lifetime. And fluffy bunnies.3 points

Gotta say, I was not interested. My wife started watching it, and I walked into the room... The parallels with our activity are stunning... especially that young lady whose ribs were trashed. Crying and huddled over after every rep, and then getting up and doing it again because you just... have to... for yourself, and for the group. I cried for some of the kids they spotlit (spotlighted?) and I wish I'd felt that during Clash of the Corps. "Cheer!" did a phenomenal job.2 points

who cares what slant his views had. here's an easier way to phrase it and save yourself a headache and stop you from making your hole deeper: " he talked all kinds of stuff and yet never practiced what he preached" problem solved2 points

There was a show at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA that I marched at back in 2001. As of today, it's 102,000 per Wikipedia. Not sure what the capacity was back then though. Also, Cotton Bowl hosted the '91 finals and clocks in at 92,000. Nebraska's stadium hosted a mid-season event once or twice in the mid-2000's, the new Meadowlands routinely hosts late-season shows, and Camp Randall in Madison has hosted finals numerous times.1 point

Cavies 2004 is still one of my favorites. I watched that show for my superbowl halftime entertainment.1 point

Oh, this is PERFECT! Surf takes the risk, runs the show, and gets the reward. Excellent! Way to go, BOB!!! I hope this is right, for Surf's sake.1 point

I've heard from someone who would know ( Surf admin) that the Surf has taken over a Cadet show, this may be the one and it quite possibly will be at Rowan in New Jersey.1 point

I’m excited to hear their music this year. I like Will Pitts but never thought his arrangements were right for Phantom.1 point

I'm hoping it is in Metlife stadium if it is a Cadets-sponsored event. That's usually standard.1 point

If it isn't on History, Discovery, Smithsonian or PBS, it's going to be "out of the norm" LOL. Then I'll have to go down to the shop and make her something fancy to get her to stop looking cross eyed at me. You gotta understand...she's 29 and used to be a cheerleader.1 point

2006 is also one of my favorite shows...hands down. My all time favorite is still their 1989 show Gloria. That show holds a special place for me. I decided to march Drum Corps after seeing it. And BTW...I miss the "classic uniforms" of every corps : (1 point

I would tend to agree. The mission statement should remain the same as long as the organization believes that it is still valid. There have been people who didn't live up to the mission statement of organizations for as long as there have been mission statements. Now, if the mission statement needs to be updated because the goals of the non-profit have changed, then go right ahead. But I think to 2000's point, the act of changing a mission statement simply because of association to an individual is unnecessary. Just my MHO.1 point

Or, sadly, it is probably the case in recent years that Madison has become a feeder corps for the top nine.1 point

This is right. It will be, and reflect, the Cadets and all of its traditions. Not GH. That ######## is dead to the org and they should kill every outward reminder of him and his $$ schemes, including YEA! and USBands. Jettison. "Sell" them (someone here says that can't be done, but...). Start new, with the old.1 point

Tek, as I understand his posts, George is saying keep the Cadets (or Garfield Cadets or...) and change the name of the parent org. I, frankly, don't give a da-em-en about YEA! - that was a HOP creation and, IMO, killing it is absolutely worth very serious discussion. It stinks too much. But The Cadets drum corps, in the Marching Music world, means something else, the "else" YOU know. I agree they should be split. Find another name for the parent - keep the corps name, tradition, style, mission, everything. The Parent's mission will grow from the decision surrounding whatever other entities need to be under that umbrella to keep the mission - and the critical corps - alive, solvent, and competitive. YEA! was a catch-all for a bunch of Hop dreams. More sane dreams will determine the nature, and name, of the parent later. DCI wants to know if they can get down the road profitable, safe, and with enough cushion to pay off whatever debts it owes. My understanding is that they have EXCELLENT and VERY EXPERIENCED guidance looking over their shoulders. Even in this state, they have a LOT of credibility asset as a teaching and winning enterprise. A good business plan won't sacrifice that, and no other "watcher" looking over their operations is going to allow that, either. Cut back to the REAL bone and re-prove tour and financial efficacy and durability - that's the obvious target of what DCI is looking for. Stop and think: Has anyone here heard anything about Cadets hiring some outside business counsel or guidance to help them rebuild? Anyone? Not me. Isn't it reasonable, therefore, to presume that those who are assisting in their oversight and direction are, in fact, "The Member Corps", represented by DCI's administrative functional structure? In other words, the other member corps? The Cadets may or may not have enough air in their bilge to right this ship. But I'm HIGHLY confident that everyone in the activity wants to see Cadets succeed and continue to be a stout competitor. The people on the ground, running this thing with all their might, skill, and dreams deserve praise for their guts and grit not attacks, period. Sending a check would be real nice. Volunteering, yes please. Coming on DCP and spreading silly, and borderline stupid, rumors is damaging, not helpful.1 point

" Casper Troopers Stockton Commodores. Marching style, Jim Jones worked with them early 1970's " This gets really deep. The Troopers were modeled after Garfield in terms of emphasis on execution, repertoire (show themes and marches) and a kind of infrastructure that could provide touring. This is not surprising when you consider that Donald Angelica was a prime arranger (along with Mike Duffy), and an advisor to Jim Jones. A little later, that gospel got spread to Gail Royer and SCV. Some of those apostles were the aforementioned Donald A, and Trooper alums Pete Emmons and Fred Sanford. This is "how the west was won", so to speak. The Troopers really did spark a new era. No one who saw them in Bridgeport at '64 World Open prelims could ever forget the pandemonium their performance caused. They finished 11th, missing finals. As the story goes, Donald A convinced the show sponsors to permit them an exhibition at the night show, partly because they had "traveled so far", but mainly because the audience was ready to burn down the town. After their evening performance it was clear to most that their prelims score was suspect...highly suspect. Regardless, they made their mark that day and established a rabid fan base a couple of thousand miles from home.1 point

My son is a returning member in 2020 and all he will say is that “expectations are higher for the hornline” under their new CH. My understanding is that one of their new brass members is coming all the way from Scandinavia, a nice geographic reach. 😎1 point

Luckily DCI has already prepared for this by moving the judges off the field.1 point

You know, some folks at Madison with their 65 pages and Cadets at 188 are probably a bit jealous of the quietness of the Cavaliers thread. 😀 Actually I thought the most exciting competition last year was between Crown, Cavies, and BAC and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it be the same this year.1 point
