Boy, you guys know how to welcome a new member to the family 😜 I guess knowing the history some have with admin is relevant knowledge, so I’ve been continuing to lurk. Just a note. My son’s decision to audition for the Madison Scouts had zero to do with being coed or their past successes/struggles. My husband and I have a ton of connections to staff members in different drum corps due to our history with the marching arts. There were so many positive comments about the staff that has been assembled with the Scouts this year. That was the only reason my son auditioned... because he was encouraged by our friends to learn from these teachers specifically. He has since watched as many MS shows he could on YouTube and has learned quite a bit of history through the returning members. My son has had an amazing high school experience with competitive success, and we are cautiously optimistic with his happiness with his experience with MS so far. Albeit, 3 camps. But he has already learned and improved so much with the staff and members in that small amount of time. Camp is this coming weekend, and he’s been practicing his tail off. The members are excited about their upcoming season! 💚🤍⚜️5 points

No, we're commenting on the hypocrisy of your posts, but thank god you decided to stop. I would say while you're ahead, but...4 points

Having a private organization wanting to be all male is NOT discrimination. Legally or otherwise. You lost the debate big time when you brought up white supremacy.4 points

How do you feel about the Rockettes, Hooters, the red hat club, Miss America pageant, Mary Kaye, etc?3 points

The cost of the activity on the participants is a much bigger issue than The Cavaliers not allowing women. The activity is becoming more and more a rich kid's game.3 points

I resemble that remark.... My first audition, Spirit of Atlanta 1986 one of the comments that was made was "I have every confidence that you could play the book perfectly...if you weren't having to march while doing it." 🤣3 points

Thats funny considering I went there not a month ago (gay male) with my sister (married to a male), our best friend (engaged to a male), and my nephew to eat. It was FULL with families, and I had the best burger of my life! For those wondering, it was the bacon mac n cheese burger. 👌👌👌 Edited to add: Every single one of these young women that you're claiming to be "objectified" were wearing yoga pants and hoodies, because they are allowed to if they feel the need or are cold.2 points

Think mine was a take off on the old baseball scouts report BITD. He was told to be concise in his telegram to the team. Telegram said “Good field, no hit”. My report was “good play, no march”. Thank goodness the corps needed “upright and breathing “.2 points

No no no, can't feel fine with the Rockettes or any of the organizations that was mentioned because why? They don't include men, which by your definition would be discrimination. So now we have walked into the double standards volume of your encyclopedia of bull. This is where I walk away because you can't want things to be equal but it be okay for all female organizations to exclude men. Simple as that. Also, as a gay male, when is the all male version of Hooters opening up?! Someone needs to start this ASAP!2 points

Pretty typical actually. I started out on Clarinet and switched to percussion my 6th grade year and marched with the high school band starting then. My father was "thrilled" to say the least when I brought home a pair of cymbals to "practice" them...but he got over it. My brother marched corps as a baritone player and my father was a huge drum corps nut. I was lucky enough to be very close to SOA so we had great instruction and a very good path to make the corps. My HS band directors were all former corps guys so they actually encouraged us to march. In fact, my HS band director took me to my first audition. It took a few years for me to make it into the big leagues but I did and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I think you guys made a good choice. Some of my favorite corps growing up were Madison and the 27th. Lots of history and great shows.2 points

They are DEFINITELY a 'class of people' who have been discriminated against in drum corps. There's no way to argue otherwise. They are, in fact, the ONLY real group (along with bad drummers and bad guard people) who have been discriminated against BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY ARE - to wit, bad horn players. Drum corps says "we'll take you and you and you....but YOU, bad horn player, NO, you can't join." By definition, that is 'discrimination."2 points

I think that may have been 2012, when we won the Class A championship with "Out of the Shadows". Our guard was phenomenal that year in Annapolis.1 point

No. I should not have been. Had I wanted to be one bad enough I should/could have auditioned for Madison, or the Cavaliers. I was free to. Just like any female today can join any other corps other than the Cavaliers. They are no more "discriminatory" than the WNBA, or any other all female group. I hope I live long enough to see this cult of victimhood pass, but I doubt it.1 point

also sharing some rare footage from 87 - full corps on the field, drum rehearsals and some ensemble such a melodic line that year -1 point

Well I might actually see some DCI this year as will be retired and not have to worry about 6am wake up. Not sure how much or little I might like but at least give it a fair shot.1 point

Hey if no one gripes that means no one cares.... good luck to him and good for him that he picked up on the corps history before he even joined.1 point

Hooters is for gross old men and teenagers who want to sexualize and objectify young women and eat food that tastes like garbage. Miss America isn't as bad as that, but is still objectifying women, I admit that I'm not all that familiar with the details of the Miss America pageant, I've never watched it but maybe it has some value that I'm not aware of, but you asked my opinion. I have no problem with women wearing bathing suits, I have problems with the gross men getting their jollies by ogling them1 point

What the heck is gross about Hooters and the Miss America pageant? You better stay away from the beach and swimming pools. Ewww!!! Scantily clad Girls who are doing it by choice!1 point

The situation with Madison (or any corps who has fallen off placement wise,) is that it's hard to measure what success would be. I don't think Top 12 is realistic simply because the current top 12 is so strong. That's not to say that it can't be done but does the corps (coed or not,) have the staff and talent MM wise to make that jump? Do they have a top 12 show sitting in their back pocket just waiting on the right time to throw it down on the table? I don't know. I don't know that anyone knows without seeing the rest of the corps in the arena. I'm unconcerned about the corps going coed. I don't know the true reasoning behind the move and I'm not one to prescribe to theories without first hand evidence. What I am am concerned about is the survival of the corps. I have nothing against an organization in DCI staying all male, all female or coed. That's their choice and they write the by-laws for that specific corps. I believe in inclusion strongly but I also believe in identity. My personal opinion is that the corps made a good move for survival sake. If you're sitting in 14th, putting up a "no girls allowed" sign on your clubhouse isn't really going to help when it comes to drawing talent. You need a pool of people to draw on. I also get where some of the fans and alum are coming from when they have concerns about tradition. But this is drum corps folks. Things change and you either keep up or you move over. The thing we should all be hoping for is growth and future success for the corps and that the MM's have a great experience. That should be the primary concern. If they finish 14th and build from there, I would call that a success. If they come in 20th and continue to slide, then it was an experiment that didn't help and that kind of thing happens. To say that this is all a distraction (which seems to be implied in some posts...let me know if I'm wrong,) is something I simply can't see a corps doing. I don't see a Scooby Do villain anywhere saying "And I could have gotten away with it to if it weren't for you meddling kids and your talking dog." Maybe I'm just blind to it. Flame away!1 point

Generally speaking, I'm the same way though I never really took personal note of it until you mentioned it. I think at times, I simply don't want to possibly taint what could be a great arrangement to my ears by placing it up against a "known" product.1 point

Agreed. No women cried foul last summer when Crossmen told veteran guard members to go elsewhere so they could have an all female guard1 point

I can't believe you just compared all male drum corps to a white nationalist group. Read up on Harvard and it's (losing) court battles with single-sex clubs and organizations if you want to learn more about what is and isn't considered "discriminatory"1 point

And they can. And apparently they want to. And apparently 150 members want that atmosphere So - there ya go!1 point

I think you missed something in the mission statement. Just as I don't believe that there's anything wrong with gay chambers of commerce, the Girl Scouts, or the VFW, I don't have a problem with private institutions setting their own definitions of what qualifies an individual for membership. Guess I'm ok with letting other people live their own lives of their own choosing.1 point

" the future of dci is wgi. " A viable premise. I think it's already materialized to a great extent. As for arrangers, I wouldn't sell the current crop short. In addition to those luminaries already mentioned, there are a few others with very heavy pens, like Jay Bocook, JD Shaw and Chuck Naffier. Beyond that, it would not surprise me if there were a couple in the woodwork about to break loose. What better way to make your bones than a Chick Corea chart. Hint: No one has yet maximized synth/electric piano in our beloved activity. Chick's "Antidote" charts with their horn, keyboard and percussion mix just about scream contemporary drum corps.1 point

I can get rid of this troublesome itch before tour starts. J/K The women in Madison have a smooth transition into the corps. The Cadets take a big step forward The battle for top 12 is as exciting as it was last year. The battle for the top spot is as exciting as it was last year. No shinny tarps. Safe travels for all corps this summer. No rain in Allentown1 point

Nope. Keep pushing that narrative though. Here’s the counter narrative I suppose - All Scouts fans should be happy with 16th and 17th place finishes. The bar should be set so low that simply being able to pile on the buses and head down the road should be considered a triumph.0 points
