  1. Hi! My husband definitely wanted trumpet but a 6th grader wants to be opposite his dad, he wanted a woodwind. Instructors suggested Baritone. He went with the baritone! My son will graduate from Homestead High School in Fort Wayne (about 2 hours north of Indy). They are a consistent top 3 in the state under Avon and Carmel as well as a BOA grand national finalist. Their previous band directors have all been very resistant to having HS kids do drum corps, but their new director works for the Bluecoats, so I see that mindset changing in the future. My husband marched with the Blue Devils (C,B, and A corps) from 1992-2000. I went to audition for Star of Indiana in the fall of 1993 (and we all know how that turned out). Most of my friends I taught color guard with are all over the place or retired now from the activity. My husband’s fellow BD alum are everywhere too including Cavies and Blue Knights (although he just took the summer off this year for the first time in ages). However, we still have connections at BD. Staff seem to move around a bunch! Oh, and I believe the marching staff from the Scouts last year are with the Crossmen, and they’re old instructors of mine long ago. We taught in the same circuit and stayed in touch! My son’s mindset is all about being the best. And in his young mind (and being pressed by his dad) the only option was the Blue Devils. However, this is not realistic these days (even with my in-laws living in Concord). Both financially and likely talent-wise with the fact that my son is inexperienced. So we reached out to friends (all listed above), and we got rave reviews about the staff at the Scouts. After talking with one particular friend who lived with and worked with the vis caption head, my son was very encouraged and excited to potentially work with these people. And here we are 🙂 Anyway, we as drum corps people know this is a family activity, and I’m so excited to help and get involved. I hope I answered all your questions!

  2. Well... as long as they refer to themselves as just "Cadets" and not "Corps of Cadets".... they might be able to co-exist. However, the Cadets' staff might want to stay out of the bars at City Dock, especially during Army-Navy Week.

  5. The inverse seems more likely to me. YEA first and foremost was The Cadets, this move is almost certainly being made to keep the rest of YEA from dragging down The Cadets rather than vice versa.

  6. Under this new management plan, what happens to the alleged debt that exists? I say "alleged" because I have no clue as to the finances of the organization. Best of luck to the Cadets, going forward!!

  9. At least sentimentally 1980 is my favorite Cadets show. I always love to see leaps and bounds improvement during the season and that was the case with Garfield Cadets in 1980. I saw them early in the season in 1980. The show was unfinished and didn’t seem to have all that much potential. It wasn’t horrendous and had enjoyable moments, but I never expected that when I turned on the television to watch finals on PBS to see who made finals, Garfield Cadets would be a finalist.

  21. I know the internet is a hive of anonymity, but I’m likely more transparent than I should be 😂 My son hates that his parents are connected and he loves it at the same time. He loves the variety in the Bari Euphs with the Scouts. He’s found a few good friends already with one from Brownsburg, one from Carroll Ft Wayne, one from Mt Orion (Michigan?). The section leader is super knowledgeable and extremely helpful to the rookies. The kid is on his game with answers. I’m happy to pass along any “inside” info An outside-looking-in parent can! Except show music and such. I know better. 😜

  22. Thanks for such a thorough, transparent, wholly & healthfully honest response, that for my opinion is so refreshing. Haven't read every post in this thread, but THESE human "interest" stories.........REAL kids in the ranks info/background, and YOU two parents longevity/story.......are what I'd like to read more. That's why I asked..........kinda sensed YOU were the one who could put a REAL face to the current mm MS story. Again, thanks for your reply.

  24. I think he wanted to play the clarinet because he was oh so good at the recorder 😒 But no, he’s been a Bari-Euph since the day he started the 6th grade. Brass from the start. And he LOVES it. Glad he gave up fighting for that God forsaken clarinet. 😂 Camp this weekend! Looking forward to hearing the next part(s) of the show!

  26. Came here to see the chatter yesterday. I didn't see antyhing going on so I left. I only delve into a couple official annual corps threads. As far as I see it, those are about 2020 program content and development. This is worthy of it's own thread, IMO.

  30. This question requires some parsing. All-Girl Corps, even at their peak, were still a super-minority of total number of organizations. From the Bon-Bons to the Gardner Guards to the ND-ettes to the Chatelaines they were unique jewels in the crown and always crowd favorites. I suppose their demise was due to most of the same factors that caused the overall decline of regional corps. Anyone reading this will be quite familiar with those. One thought persists: Those young women provided the spark for gender equity in all sections of corps. Rita Macey, Cherokee Merino, and others proved without a doubt that women were fully capable of any task in any section. Just ask Bonnie Ott, Gail DeAngelis, Barbara Maroney or any of the thousands who came after.

  32. I guess my decades of management in non profits and regular work with NPO specific attorneys is just all wasted time. Google deeper. You cannot just voluntarily "swap" you status. The NPO must be dissolved and there are strict limitations in how that works from state to state. Here's just one of many articles that explains how tricky this process could be. Essentially it requires a completely new corporate entity to be formed and various ways to then find for one to take control of the other. Key is that the State must approve it, and in my experience that is never an easy thing to make happen. https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/295534 As is mentioned other places in the thread... there really is no reason for Varsity to want to "own" USB. They can support it via Sponsorship and stewardship to make it healthier and more successful, then leverage that to market their products.

  33. I was wondering that too, but I don't want to be negative. I'm sure they have good legal advice, but if the assets of YEA were siphoned off to Cadets and USBands before YEA files for bankruptcy, I can't see the creditors sitting around saying, "Well nothing left of value, we'll just cut our losses."

  37. A for-profit corporation cannot own a non-profit as you correctly stated, but it can run and manage a non-profit corporation. It can appoint all or some of the non-profit board, and it can manage financials, as long as that is not mixed in with the for-profit financials. There needs to be a definite wall separating the two, but it is possible. For-profits often have non-profit charitable foundations, for example.

  38. My prediction, which i can say now because it wrong and I won’t be starting a rumor, was that they would administratively merge with The Crossmen and share administrative overhead.

  40. Given the announcement, I would bet money that Varsity is poised to simply become the presenting sponsor of all USBands events and use those events to drive demand for their products like Stanbury uniforms and whatever other lines of supplies for bands they choose to promote. They already have fundraising, awards and trophies, memorabilia etc. Lots of ways to sell products to a whole new market segment.
