Thirty years in fund-raising. Confirming: the #1 reason people say they do not give, "I was not asked." (Indirect communication -- brochures, e-mail, et al -- are simply that: indirect communication. They are not "asks.")4 points

Right now may be the perfect time to donate to Cadets because when an organization has so many people watching it, more often than not there are tighter controls. My thought would be every penny will be accounted for in the upcoming days. That being said, trust is very hard to earn when there have been so many ways that trust has been violated. In the case of the Cadets, the people most responsible and in particular one person who was especially a lightning rod may be gone, but regaining the trust will take a while.3 points

Uggggh! Are you kidding me? That's too hard to do. It's easier to pontificate on this site.2 points

My gosh, I just got the other interpretation. Alright just to clarify, I am rooting for a second championship and that is all š Iāll let them worry about their personal issues...2 points

The great Bill Hayes has passed. After serving as an Air Corps turret gunner in WWII and earning 4 bronze stars, he completed his music degree, became the first "Cherry Pink" soloist in the Caballeros, and taught both music and drill to dozens of the finest drum corps in the country. If you ever marched in this activity, you either learned from him, someone else who had, or one of their students. We all carry Bill's Drum Corps DNA to some degree. He was the personification of "The Greatest Generation", in every sense of the word. Details: https://tilghmanfh.com/tribute/details/1343/William-Hayes-Jr/obituary.html#content-start2 points

Since I can interpret that a couple of different ways, I choose that to mean a second championship, of which I am in favor. The other interpretation, not so much.2 points

So. Decided to check camp out today at Lakewood ranch... not sure if putting your camp in Florida then having less than 50 brass show up.... now, I donāt know if thatās 50 new brass players or not but... I donāt know if thatās a successful camp from a ātop 12 organizationā Ron, the assistant director(?) whoās below the director of ops(?) unfortunately had to do double duty of band director and try and run camp? Kind of(?) i wish some of yall were there to observe, that is all. Excited for this call and to see how they will have money to go on the road this year and at least remain on the same level of quality of the top 12!1 point

His "new" page is the old "The Cadets" page that he was the admin of and refused to give up. He just changed the name, I imagine a good chunk of those people have no idea that he is running the group or that they are following it To put it bluntly, why would anyone care about his opinion on the matter? He hasn't been involved in the corps in two years and never will be again.1 point

Exactly. People questioning decisions before things are even really announced fully. Next Wednesday they will host a webinar - hopefully lots of folks check it out. This weekend's camp a Q&A for folks, and then an alumni meeting as well on 2/18. Lots of communication planned. Smart!1 point

It's like some people here won't be satisfied until Cadets fold. They provide information and some people are still questioning their decisions instead of letting the pieces fall into place. There is just no pleasing some people.1 point

honestly i know many people had concerns that their donations went to whatever bill in YEA needed paid that as opposed to solely for the Cadets, so this could increase donations1 point
-
The inverse seems more likely to me. YEA first and foremost was The Cadets, this move is almost certainly being made to keep the rest of YEA from dragging down The Cadets rather than vice versa.1 point

Dad wanted a trumpet player ... what kind of compromise is being a barri? Mello ... thatās a fair compromise.1 point

I know the internet is a hive of anonymity, but Iām likely more transparent than I should be š My son hates that his parents are connected and he loves it at the same time. He loves the variety in the Bari Euphs with the Scouts. Heās found a few good friends already with one from Brownsburg, one from Carroll Ft Wayne, one from Mt Orion (Michigan?). The section leader is super knowledgeable and extremely helpful to the rookies. The kid is on his game with answers. Iām happy to pass along any āinsideā info An outside-looking-in parent can! Except show music and such. I know better. š1 point

Thanks for such a thorough, transparent, wholly & healthfully honest response, that for my opinion is so refreshing. Haven't read every post in this thread, but THESE human "interest" stories.........REAL kids in the ranks info/background, and YOU two parents longevity/story.......are what I'd like to read more. That's why I asked..........kinda sensed YOU were the one who could put a REAL face to the current mm MS story. Again, thanks for your reply.1 point

Hi! My husband definitely wanted trumpet but a 6th grader wants to be opposite his dad, he wanted a woodwind. Instructors suggested Baritone. He went with the baritone! My son will graduate from Homestead High School in Fort Wayne (about 2 hours north of Indy). They are a consistent top 3 in the state under Avon and Carmel as well as a BOA grand national finalist. Their previous band directors have all been very resistant to having HS kids do drum corps, but their new director works for the Bluecoats, so I see that mindset changing in the future. My husband marched with the Blue Devils (C,B, and A corps) from 1992-2000. I went to audition for Star of Indiana in the fall of 1993 (and we all know how that turned out). Most of my friends I taught color guard with are all over the place or retired now from the activity. My husbandās fellow BD alum are everywhere too including Cavies and Blue Knights (although he just took the summer off this year for the first time in ages). However, we still have connections at BD. Staff seem to move around a bunch! Oh, and I believe the marching staff from the Scouts last year are with the Crossmen, and theyāre old instructors of mine long ago. We taught in the same circuit and stayed in touch! My sonās mindset is all about being the best. And in his young mind (and being pressed by his dad) the only option was the Blue Devils. However, this is not realistic these days (even with my in-laws living in Concord). Both financially and likely talent-wise with the fact that my son is inexperienced. So we reached out to friends (all listed above), and we got rave reviews about the staff at the Scouts. After talking with one particular friend who lived with and worked with the vis caption head, my son was very encouraged and excited to potentially work with these people. And here we are š Anyway, we as drum corps people know this is a family activity, and Iām so excited to help and get involved. I hope I answered all your questions!1 point

Boy, you guys know how to welcome a new member to the family š I guess knowing the history some have with admin is relevant knowledge, so Iāve been continuing to lurk. Just a note. My sonās decision to audition for the Madison Scouts had zero to do with being coed or their past successes/struggles. My husband and I have a ton of connections to staff members in different drum corps due to our history with the marching arts. There were so many positive comments about the staff that has been assembled with the Scouts this year. That was the only reason my son auditioned... because he was encouraged by our friends to learn from these teachers specifically. He has since watched as many MS shows he could on YouTube and has learned quite a bit of history through the returning members. My son has had an amazing high school experience with competitive success, and we are cautiously optimistic with his happiness with his experience with MS so far. Albeit, 3 camps. But he has already learned and improved so much with the staff and members in that small amount of time. Camp is this coming weekend, and heās been practicing his tail off. The members are excited about their upcoming season! šš¤āļø1 point

Believe it or not, Jackson wasn't all that small (capacity = 60,492). Byrd Stadium in 2000 was the smallest, with capacity at the time that was only around 48,055. Memorial Stadium in Bloomington was also relatively small (49,255 in 2008). Interesting enough, both of those stadiums hosted the championships as a result of problems with the venue originally chosen for that year.1 point

There was a show at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA that I marched at back in 2001. As of today, it's 102,000 per Wikipedia. Not sure what the capacity was back then though. Also, Cotton Bowl hosted the '91 finals and clocks in at 92,000. Nebraska's stadium hosted a mid-season event once or twice in the mid-2000's, the new Meadowlands routinely hosts late-season shows, and Camp Randall in Madison has hosted finals numerous times.1 point

The instructors shouldnāt, by themselves, be able to pass out of caucus rules changes that have financial impacts on drum corps or DCI. If itās going to incur additional expenses that will necessarily be passed on to the corps or the members, the adults in the room who have to actually pay the bills should be part of evaluating those changes. Those who are already making unseemly amounts of money designing the shows (and then using their DCI credentials to soak band boosters for even more) should stay in their lanes and create within the financial boundaries the adults put in place. Now that itās done, can we just say that Ms Blackās proposal was embarrassingly under-considered, to the point where, were she still in law school and presented an argument as weak in a classroom setting, sheād be laughed out of the room. Next time before she stands up and acts as the guts of some corps directors or staffers who are too afraid to propose this on their own, she should at least try to come up with an argument for her proposal that isnāt based on suppositions that bear no relationship to reality.1 point

Great News! Sounds like the vote wasn't even close. I know it will come up again, but tonight time to celebrate with a few Manhattans and blasting 1974 Kingsmen!1 point
