  4. What did you do on vacation... watch drum corps! Almost did that years ago in Canada. Drove by a stadium near Toronto and saw a corps on the field. Found out later it was a major competition. If only there had been the internet to tell us we would have rescheduled whatever the heck we did that day.

  5. How would anyone here know the answer to that today? Also, as there are a bunch of professionals involved with this process, financial, legal, etc...don't you think that they will do what is necessary. Also, DCI is involved with all of this as well, so whatever happens I would guess they are part of the process. Those are the people who matter in creating this new organization.

  7. Well you’re clearly not going to stop theres a webinar explaining the arrangement of the new Cadets organization and the path forward It’s Thursday night night and you should tune in instead of just spreading rumors and asking silly leading questions on DCP

  9. Since it has been noted by lifeisaround that there were less than 50 brass, I’m curious as to how many brass players were excused from this mandatory brass camp.

  10. It's interesting to read the list of discontinued Olympic sports on this page: Basque Pelota Court Tennis Cricket Croquet Equestrian Vaulting Handball Lacrosse Military Patrol Motorboat Racing Pelota Polo Rackets Roque Tug-of-War As well as sports that were conducted as Olympic demonsration events but never added to the competition: American Football Australian Football Auto Racing Ballooning Bandy Boules Bowling Canne de combat Gaelic Football Gliding Glima Hurling Ice Stock Kaatsen Kendo Korfball Kyudo Lifesaving Ling Gymnastics Longue paume Pesapallo Roller Hocket Savate Ski Ballet Skijoring Sled Dog Racing Speed Skiing* Sumo Water Skiing Winter Pentathlon *I remember the speed skiing demonstration in 1992. One of the competitors was killed during practice when he struck a snow grooming vehicle at 100 mph.

  13. The "baggage" is all that has gone on with Cadets which led to bands pulling out of events and people not wanting to do business with US Bands. And then there is the use of US Bands revenue t support the corps instead of support... the participating directors and bands. Anyone can start a circuit. But US Bands will be better positioned to be a service organization and not just someones side deal to generate cash. A health, independent, service-focused US Bands is good for music education.

  18. Sooooo quick question, when the cadets separate does their debt follow?!? Because the 67K they owe dci should be accounted for plus the amount of other stuff they owe.... they need to be held accountable for all of this!

  25. I don't know if it will be a problem or not. Hopefully its not, and the Cadets talk about it in detail, next week. I think a lot depends on just how big a "relatively small debt" is ,and how many companies. they owe money to. "Cred, kudos sounds nice. But, what good are "future orders" if you're not assured your getting paid, especially when that's happened before ? Maybe the companies that deal with drum corps are different. But most companies want to get paid for services or goods they provide. I know in my business,if a client owes me money ,and wants more work done my answer isn't usually "sure, glad to help you out". "Cred" doesn't help me pay my employees every week. .

  26. I don't think this will be a problem. No supplier wants to be the death knell of a venerable org like this just to settle a relatively small debt. Much more cred, kudos, and future orders comes with seeing the situation in its totality and stepping up first in line to renegotiate whatever debt is owed to not strangle the new BoD while trying to save/rebuild the org from a once-in-a-lifetime calamity. They deserve grace, understanding, and the BOTD. I'm betting they're getting that with new and clear repayment terms.

  27. Although I wonder who today's Dalton Trumbo might be, it would be an interesting adaptation where Nick (GH) takes his love (YEA! or his guard instructor) hostage and brutalizes it, still thinking it's only for him, until, while trying to jump bail, he's shot down by a bevy of victims who corner him just as his 401(k) settlement clears his bank.

  32. I guess my decades of management in non profits and regular work with NPO specific attorneys is just all wasted time. Google deeper. You cannot just voluntarily "swap" you status. The NPO must be dissolved and there are strict limitations in how that works from state to state. Here's just one of many articles that explains how tricky this process could be. Essentially it requires a completely new corporate entity to be formed and various ways to then find for one to take control of the other. Key is that the State must approve it, and in my experience that is never an easy thing to make happen. https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/295534 As is mentioned other places in the thread... there really is no reason for Varsity to want to "own" USB. They can support it via Sponsorship and stewardship to make it healthier and more successful, then leverage that to market their products.

  33. A for-profit corporation cannot own a non-profit as you correctly stated, but it can run and manage a non-profit corporation. It can appoint all or some of the non-profit board, and it can manage financials, as long as that is not mixed in with the for-profit financials. There needs to be a definite wall separating the two, but it is possible. For-profits often have non-profit charitable foundations, for example.

  34. Are you saying he went to corps with a woodwind background? Wondering as seems every time a woodwind wants to join a corps they shove a bari in his/her hands lol. And saw that back in the late 70s. I played trombone which meant I learned fingerings by reading them on the chart as I played. Variety in Baris/euphs? Cue evil laugh as my all age corps had music majors playing lead, blue collar types playing 3rd and couple IT types on 2nd. Bari tech would talk in musical terms for the leads and sing what he wanted to the rest of us. 😆 Real mix and we got along well.

  35. Boy, you guys know how to welcome a new member to the family 😜 I guess knowing the history some have with admin is relevant knowledge, so I’ve been continuing to lurk. Just a note. My son’s decision to audition for the Madison Scouts had zero to do with being coed or their past successes/struggles. My husband and I have a ton of connections to staff members in different drum corps due to our history with the marching arts. There were so many positive comments about the staff that has been assembled with the Scouts this year. That was the only reason my son auditioned... because he was encouraged by our friends to learn from these teachers specifically. He has since watched as many MS shows he could on YouTube and has learned quite a bit of history through the returning members. My son has had an amazing high school experience with competitive success, and we are cautiously optimistic with his happiness with his experience with MS so far. Albeit, 3 camps. But he has already learned and improved so much with the staff and members in that small amount of time. Camp is this coming weekend, and he’s been practicing his tail off. The members are excited about their upcoming season! 💚🤍⚜️

  36. I would like to see just a bit more emphasis on drill this year. I know staging is the thing right now, but I LOVE it when a corps has a challenging visual design.

  39. I can get rid of this troublesome itch before tour starts. J/K The women in Madison have a smooth transition into the corps. The Cadets take a big step forward The battle for top 12 is as exciting as it was last year. The battle for the top spot is as exciting as it was last year. No shinny tarps. Safe travels for all corps this summer. No rain in Allentown

  42. Interesting- your posting history is lately 100%. negative regarding Cadets and yet you run to a satellite brass camp in FL (which some folks were excused from) and we are supposed to be shocked your take is 100% negative? Hardly!

  43. So. Decided to check camp out today at Lakewood ranch... not sure if putting your camp in Florida then having less than 50 brass show up.... now, I don’t know if that’s 50 new brass players or not but... I don’t know if that’s a successful camp from a “top 12 organization” Ron, the assistant director(?) who’s below the director of ops(?) unfortunately had to do double duty of band director and try and run camp? Kind of(?) i wish some of yall were there to observe, that is all. Excited for this call and to see how they will have money to go on the road this year and at least remain on the same level of quality of the top 12!
