  1. When arrogance meets stopwatch, stopwatch wins.

  2. I wouldn’t expect to hear detailed explanations about finances, bankruptcies, whatever. Not only are these very complex issues that draw wide interpretations, I believe too much related information is ill-advised. Won’t be tuning in, but anxiously await the whole event being sliced and diced here. Public, unsolicited opinions are an important part. A little like theater reviews. There’s something to learn pro and con. Best wishes to the present Cadets management !

  6. No hints (As of today. Could it change in the future? It is not being discussed as of now). Just reconnecting with Alum that were pushed away for decades, by inviting them in person to play a part in an organization that they participated in and love to this day. You will see more of that across the country with the CAA (Cadet Alumni Association) in the upcoming months.

  8. Around 12:35 sounds incredible in person. I heard it at the December and January camps, and it sounds glorious. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I first heard it. Just a sneak peak of something you will be playing on repeat this coming summer. Go Crown!!

  16. You're looking at this the wrong way. YEA ran up some huge bus bills for The Cadets over the past few years. YEA also borrowed a bunch of money from banks over the past few years. Spinning the Cadets out as its own entity does not absolve the new Cadets entity of its liability to pay those debts, to the extent that the new Cadets entity is a "successor" of YEA, which under the law it certainly is. You don't just get to abandon debt by moving a business unit out the back door. If that worked, the law of obligations would not exist.

  18. Does anyone else think after the Beatles, 2020 would be a good year for a Pink Floyd show for Blooo? It could be called The Pinkcoats or Pink Side of the Moon. They could march in chanting “We don’t need no education”, build a wall slowly to create sets with huge white bricks. or even have a flying pig. “Time” and “Money” could make great productions. “Money” would have a great funky tuba background and the sax solo would sound great on trumpet. “Breathe”, “Us Or Them”, or “Comfortably Numb” would make a great ballad. “On The Run” or “Welcome To The Machine” could show off their difficult side, with cool electronic effects. “Eclipse” would be a powerful closer. What does anyone else think?

  19. The sad thing to me was that we had such a great year in 1971, with Frank Dorittie, George Tuthill and Bobby Hoffman as the staff. When George was let go after 71, a good percentage of the drumline left and went to the Cabs where he was also drum instructor. If I recall, 2 of 4 snares, 2 of 4 timps and all 3 of the tri-tom section quit. None of us were near to aging out. If we could have kept the line together, who knows where we could have gone the next couple of years. i did go back in late winter, but I played horn...I mean, who wanted to be in a Fred Sanford drumline? 🙄

  20. The primary reason we went to Whitewater and Racine was because originally it was the only SoundSport show in early July after the Bowling Green show ended in 2016. We continued going in 2017-2019 for outreach, community relations, and to allow for an early season read of the show before heading to SoundSport, then DCA shows. From a financial perspective we got to perform at 2-3 shows ; on the field with a full judges tapes and the ability to make $300-500 in souvenirs; for the price we'd pay for exhibition and tickets for 2 DCI shows as an exhibition corps while not being able to sell souvies. Additionally, each year we had the opportunity to partner with local programs; bring the drum corps activity to ignored communities in Chicago and Milwaukee while also having the privilege of being able to donate uniforms, and other equipment to programs. In the grand scheme of competitive drum corps; it doesn't make sense. In the scheme of drum corps being a community activity and it being important to our values to invest, develop, and build a community through music - it's priceless. As such we are discussing plans for returning to Chicago in the coming years to participate in the Bud Biliken Parade and hold a clinic. Here is an article detailing our Chicago outreach during our 2017 MACBDA tour.https://www.columbussaints.org/saints-hold-community-event-west-side-chicago/ Here is a video announcing the tour kickoff and more:

  22. agreed - just "fleeing" doesn't completely shield them from some debt/liability - depending on who/what/when/signed by etc and certainly they just can't flee with "YEA! assets" - things would be purchased at "fair market value" like old vehicles etc.. I would GUESS Cadets are carrying along any debt to suppliers or DCI? Things tied directly to the "Cadets" as a performance ensemble I would GUESS that YEA! is carrying debt for shows USB sponsored shows, salary owed, potential lawsuit liability re: GH If I was involved on running Cadets right now I would seriously limit putting many/any assets in the "Cadets" new organization name until the clouds clear Perhaps some upcoming settlement or bankruptcy which is signed off on by a JUDGE vs. the various DCP experts. Then they can truly "move on" This all could take a while to sort out - "fortunately" lawyers tend to "follow the money" and "fish where the fish are" and this may save them in the longer run...Cadets are pretty fishless these days...

  23. On YT there’s a live PMG video of “First Circle,” 1989 Montreal Canada. Have lost count of the number of times I’ve viewed it over the years, and Lyle Mays’ keyboard feature during that performance still leaves me breathless.

  29. I know the school I worked with left USBands after 2018 and joined a new circuit in Virginia. Many others in Northern VA did the same. I doubt there will be any issues with other circuits absorbing bands if USBands truly folds. Over the past few years, we noticed the quantity of bands at USBands competitions dropping in Virginia and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

  32. Exactly what "Asset" is Cadets to YEA!? "...shed assets..."?
    1 point
  33. Well. If you remember they were also with another corps that year ( staff ) Your details are for sure right but all I will add is that at some point near the time of Whitewater a warning had been given. If you remember, a great staff, a new approach, a new era beginning etc. etc. and along with that came a bit of arrogance .

  34. Hopefully they'll have an EXCELLENT show in 2020!

  35. All the way to Whitewater the staff....Bobby Hoffman, Pete Emmons, Don Angelica, and Fred Sanford, messed with the show, adding, tweaking, adding, tweaking....but you never saw the word "removing" in that. The show got longer and longer. Apparently nobody on staff thought to actually time the additions they made. So...we missed finals. The day after we performed...the staff disappeared. The show itself was amazing (No More War), but the overall vibe of the season was just not the same as 1971 (America, the Brave), which was an amazing year.

  36. USBands is still a strong circuit, even if not as large as before. Without having the Cadets to siphon off resources, it may be possible that YEA and whatever creditors exist can work out payment based on future USBand revenues.

  39. You're probably right. Drum Corps as it exists today would be a bit of a stretch, but Winter Guard is definitely in the realm. The Summer Olympics do have a small bit of Drum Corps connection as several alumni participated in the 1984 Summer Olympic band in L.A.

  40. The great Bill Hayes has passed. After serving as an Air Corps turret gunner in WWII and earning 4 bronze stars, he completed his music degree, became the first "Cherry Pink" soloist in the Caballeros, and taught both music and drill to dozens of the finest drum corps in the country. If you ever marched in this activity, you either learned from him, someone else who had, or one of their students. We all carry Bill's Drum Corps DNA to some degree. He was the personification of "The Greatest Generation", in every sense of the word. Details: https://tilghmanfh.com/tribute/details/1343/William-Hayes-Jr/obituary.html#content-start
