  1. Don’t feel bad. I know an accountant who doesn’t understand why he has so many kids.

  2. This debate about 501c3, whether they can fundraise, whether your donation is tax deductible, where their board is, Etc. is just odd to me. They are not operating as their own organization yet. That’s not until March 31. 501c3 is YEA right now. Board is YEA right now. Donations are tax deductible right now. They can fundraise and you can donate - and write it off. They said all of these details would be complete by March 31 when they transition. Why are we still talking about this? Am I missing something?

  5. Thank you sir for the reasonable response to the Cadets webinar. The cynicism about this organization is really sad. I have faith in the current team and believe they are on a positive trajectory. Feel free to insult me if you want.

  7. Denise knows what she's doing and also knows the importance of making sure the right people are in place. She has an extensive business background and has said that is one thing that separates herself from many other DCI directors. I cannot imagine she doesn't understand the importance of a 501 (c) (3) or doesn't know what needs to be done to get one or the challenges involved in it. If they would need to hire a financial expert to get it done, then I don't doubt they would do that. This is business 101 stuff and if someone like Denise couldn't figure that out, then she is a complete moron. She doesn't come across as a moron to me. In time perhaps I'll be proven wrong. But this time I think I'm right. I just think they deserve to be given the opportunity to show they can do this.

  9. I also watched the Facebook meeting they had last weekend. It appears to me that Denise is doing a LOT of the work. Not just the front of the house, but the back as well. They said she has been constantly putting in 12 hour days trying to get this done. She used the term "lean and mean". They are saving a lot of money by not filling in staff at multiple positions and those people that they do have are busting their tails to get things done. To me, it sounds like the admin is establishing a work ethic that mirrors The Cadets ideals perfectly. It's only going to be that much easier to get the members locked in if the admin is practicing what they preach. I think the road will get easier for the admin, but right now they appear to all be on the same page in that there is a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it. I do think the right people are in place.

  10. In my opinion, I think that the brand new BOD for the Cadets should have absolutely no ties to the old BOD at YEA or anyone who had prior administrative duties under GH. I truly believe that these matters of optics and public perception are important. Especially after so much public hand-wringing over their zeal to rid themselves of any and all ties to GH and the old "rubber stamp" BOD methods of operation (among other things). To be clear, I don't believe that everyone involved back then is automatically guilty by association, I just think that what's best for the Cadets at this crucial point in time is a clean break from that era when it comes to corps' management and operations. Fresh new faces, ideas, and vision for the future.

  13. I'm not sunshine pumpers or dark clouds. But I have been to every camp (except the Florida camp) and the Cadets are in very good shape. And that's the simple truth...not an agenda. Does the management team have work to do? Yes they do; however, this team is qualified and ready to move upward. I have more faith in the current management team and staff than probably...ever!

  15. There are more webinars coming up. I hope they do not release any information that is not 100% nailed down. As the back is where they are still working on setting up the organization, I am fine not knowing until they are ready to release the information. This is not a one-hour TV show (actually around 42 minutes with commercials) where everything is wrapped up in that hour.

  19. Again -- who taught you corporate law?! A corporation literally cannot exist without having a board of directors in place. It's a legal impossibility. If a corporation has no board, there is literally no corporation. The way you start a corporation -- and we know now that they have not -- is to file the Articles of Incorporation with the relevant state Secretary of State. In those Articles, you are required to name the initial board of directors. There is no way around this. What we have here is a loosely associated group of people with a "plan" that they won't share, who seem to be repeating past mistakes.

  20. When you say - work to do - are you meaning financially? Or at the marching members side of it, such as talent, preparation, things like that? Or some of both? I’m getting hints the most work to do is in the administration/financial health side of the house versus the on-the-field product. Is that how you see it?

  23. Not at all. You're over-exaggerating even your normal hyperbole. A post here showed "Questions not answered..."; ridiculous questions completely out of place for this forum and mostly designed to require predicting the future or living up to pipe-dreams. I think their ignoring the ignorant was a sign of clarity and level-headedness.

  25. Thanks for the update. It seems to have covered the items I would expect at such a webinar. They have a lot of work ahead, but it seems they are moving the "front of the house" forward while at the same time working on the "back of the house". I would doubt much of the back information would be released until it is 100% finalized and in operation.

In any organization the BOARD is first and the BOARD hires the management team, not the other way around! The managers work FOR THE BOARD. The COO has a "consulting company" that "supports non-profits." Uh.... what? No spring training site?! IT'S LESS THAN 90 DAYS AWAY! I feel exactly zero confidence in donating to this organization which hasn't provided any clear answers about whether it is a non-profit charity or not ####

  30. Yes and, in this case, easily. Cadets are not a new org. They were once their own 501c3 tax ID. Their mission hasn’t changed. They have an ED, a Secretary, and a CFO. I also depends where they end up. States differ on review time.

  33. If you care about the future of The Cadets, support them now. Deduction or not. If you contribute philanthropically merely for the deduction, perhaps you should mindfully reconsider your giving. The 501c3 filing will come through.

  35. All corps have work to do this time of the year. However, the most important work right now (for the future sustainment of the Cadets organization) is on the admin/financial side of the house.

  36. they didn't say that & they implied the opposite actually - discussing alumni events and a BOD dedicated to growing the financial health and foundation of the organization they also went somewhat into depth on installing a business management software package that would streamline financial matters and internal communication - eliminating the need for a "data entry person" finally they discussed leveraging more completely their massive alumni through alumni events spread throughout the country

They've got their work cut out for them - and anyone involved in something like this knows that However I greatly believe in a couple of the executive folks, and the couple I'm already aware will be on the BOD The BOD will be more "Inspire like" than "YEA like" particularly the kangaroo BOD BITD

  39. I'm not sure what this sentence means, but what makes you think this leadership is trying to mimic ANYTHING that GH did? Isn't it more rational that, to provide an experience and win medals, the design, staff, volunteers, and membership are more important? I just can't find much "legacy" that needs to be preserved besides that, least of all the leadership structure of the past.

  42. I've read your reflections here, and I went out searching Google this morning trying to identify any public CV or info about Moore. I find nothing. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt to produce corroboration of your claim. EDIT: I read your next comment to the recap and you make this contention again. You're looking as his past job titles and presume he's not qualified. Your contention is that he's an IT guy who worked several jobs at YEA! and now has this "gig" with no org or finance background. I'm not convinced that he's not a finance guy who knew IT enough to fix the finance system for George and got this "gig" because he knows how to say No and balance risk/reward. There is a staff member who provides finance operations - it's not like he needs to know how to complete the 990 or balance the checkbook. It does mean he knows the financial requirements of running a drum corps - because he's been there - and learned first-hand how to get them down the road. What more does the head Opps and money-guy need to run a $1mm non-profit? This is not Google or Uber.

  45. two more upcoming webinars March 19, 2020 8:00pm EST UPCOMING Meet the The Brass Design Team April 20, 2020 8:00pm EST UPCOMING Meet the The Design Team So - the one that just happened > there were two trolls on the questions - Moi and Harrison - hard to take either seriously. Wonder if they are also posting here? (Magic 8 ball says yes) Some news: 4 team members covered bio BOD announced March 31 New website March 31 Organization name is simply "Cadets Organization" Implied the 2 satellite camps were a longer view strategy to increase the reach of the organization Horn line non-contracted spots down to single digits - complimented talent level Percussion full with "incredible talent" corps running 2 shows (Allentown and Annapolis) plus a third they are still finalizing venue Guard at 50% contracted which is ahead of the 30% they were at last year same time Brass has first two tunes 30% - brass getting third at next camp & at April camp rest of music will be to brass & percussion Wine & Cheese fundraiser in April - invites and details soon, great success last year YES - they can legally accept donations at this time April - show would be announced on Maroon & Gold Day Ticket sales through DCI this season (I personally would assume this is how DCI will recoup funds for YEA! debt Music copyright secured stands at 85% and should be 100% very soon ST site (implied at a university) announced "within a week or so" Drill/Visual design - moving along well Re: Alumni > communication a focus and newsletter out soon YES - you will know it's THE Cadets as soon as you see the corps Things not addressed - the status of YEA! more explanation to the "divorce" other than saying it will allow the new organization to focus on the corps Did not delve into legal matters etc - so those topics went untouched

  46. I can think of a few reasons. One, some answers may be vague, and there could be legitimate reasons why some things may be vague. Second, there are some who will only want to hear what they want to hear. For me, as long as what they say satisfies marching members, staff, parents, and donors, that is what matters most.
