  1. God complex - A god complex is an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. A person with a god complex may refuse to admit the possibility of their error or failure, even in the face of irrefutable evidence, intractable problems or difficult or impossible tasks. The person is also highly dogmatic in their views, meaning the person speaks of their personal opinions as though they were unquestionably correct.[1] Someone with a god complex may exhibit no regard for the conventions and demands of society, and may request special consideration or privileges.[1] my view: Once (hopefully) the Cadets start moving forward successfully (June??!!) and put a quality product on the field and chart a solid volunteer/financial future he will "move on" since the "evidence" will no longer reinforce the God complex. Unfortunately 2018/19 results have only served to reinforce the self-perspective

  2. I liked the more sprightly tempo in 78. It got kind of funeral dirgey in 79. But I know they were slowing it down so that long roll was AFTER the gun went off. šŸ˜‚

  10. You should see the rants in "his" cadets group. He really thinks he isn't responsible for what they are going through. It just magically happened after he was fired.

  12. Ok...so were not talking about favorite corps songs. But rather our favorite songs that corps did. Speaking of the Guardsmen, the 1979 show is musical gold, just awesome, and a brass line that I believe beat every line that year or close to it...and that color guard was GREAT.

  13. Because sometimes they're not. At 04 DCA prelims, we (SoCal Dream) were having issues with one of the keyboard stands in the pit....so when Fran Haring asked if we were ready, I shook my head "no." About 30 seconds later I called the corps to attention and saluted that we were ready. It's not just a formality...it's a legit question.

  14. Just to clarify...The Cadets at present still operate under the YEA! umbrella. We will be an independent non profit organization beginning on March 31, with a full board of directors as required by the government. Please please rest assured that we know what we are doing. If you have serious questions or concerns about this then please email me at bmartin@cadets.org. As the Development Director i can assure you that you can make a donation to The Cadets today or after March 31 and everything will be fine. Brad Martin Development and Marketing Manager The Cadets

  16. It is cool when it works.... but it can also lead to its own set of issues, with the timing of the announcement. Trust me. LOL. From my radio days, a DJ talking up until the music starts is called "hitting the post." But hitting the post in a stadium environment, where there can be a delay from when the announcer speaks to when it's actually heard over the PA system....well... the post can be run over. That happened at least once for me, at a DCI gig I worked. There was a significant PA delay... one to two seconds lag time. A couple of corps had the "announcement timed with the music" thing... but only one of them factored in the delay. Thus, the announcement stepped on the first note of music for one corps who hadn't taken a delay into consideration. In that case, I plead not guilty. LOL. Not my fault. Nor is it Brandt's fault, or any other announcer's fault. Our job is to talk when cued. If a corps wants to get cute with the timing, and a delay (or a tempo problem) messes that up... that's on them. Honestly, I wish all the announcements were made up front, before a corps starts its show or "pre-judged time" show. Just a better flow, IMO.

  20. Iā€™m a band director too, and I know that most of the bands in my area that are competitive do NOT use stock charts. Some that donā€™t compete, yes they may use stock charts, but not the TOB, USBands and Cavalcade bands. They have their shows arranged, composed, or the band directors arrange themselves and pay the fees. Most high schools are just like the corps, and some spend as much money for arranging as the corps do, and also have to pay the arranging license fees on top of that.

  22. Mom was into brass choir sounds as she was in the church choir for years. One year horn line did a hymn at our stand still show to fill in the time. Later in the year she wondered why it wasnā€™t in the show. Had to explain that was a warm up number. šŸ„µ

  23. Bill Fulson and I marched together in St. Catherine's Queensmen. He posted this photo of their All-Girls sister corps, the Marianettes, with some personal comments. It's from 1955, their first year. Eventually, these NYC girls gave the Bon Bons a good run.

  24. I didn't state a single word of any negativity toward The Cadets. In fact, several of my former students marched with the corps as recently as this past year and plan to march again this coming year. The path forward was my original discussion. The fact that there is a "Path Forward" is a positive. Let's try to keep that in mind.

  30. Remember the starter pistol shots at the start of judging and the when judging ended? That was tradition too. But weā€™re waaay past that one as well. I think itā€™s time for change from the announcerā€™s booth.

  31. Oh this brings back memories. Yes they were great, ESPECIALLY for their era. Set so many standards. Bear in mind a couple of items: Corps at that time were still pretty local, Most members were from the area, not traveling across the county to march (yes a few exceptions but a rarity). The Royals were still a relatively "new" unit in '65. If I remember, they started out as a parish corps in maybe '58. Also, most members were still high schoolers, not the college 20-21 year old , music majors like today. In any comparisons, we need to always keep in mind the circumstances and development of the activity at that time.

  33. Oh hell yeah - let's talk 90's drum corps! '91 was a good show, but '92 was a *great* one. Tempos were a little higher, charts were tighter and that brass line sounded like lasers out there. Their finals performance was absolutely on fire! '91, however, was much more faithful to the original, and had that really cool split tenor feature in the pit (on the broadcast sadly, all you see is the tenors on stands almost taking a tumble...). 34. It's a tradition. Somebody has to say that or it's not Drum Corps and everything will just go to pot. I mean take that away and the next thing you know there'll be MMs in strange spandex outfits running around, using sousaphones, trombones, and God knows what else.

  35. Hi George. We are extremely confident in our financial structure and our board. As long as great people like you and everyone who has supported The Cadets continue to do so then we will continue to be fine. I have been around drum corps and fundraising since 2011 and see no reason that fundraising will be anything but successful as it has always been.

  36. So expressing how you love someone is "unhealthy", "obsessive", and a "dependency". Okay. Someone better wake Shakespear from the grave to tell him the true meaning of love so that he can rewrite his Sonnets. Seems to me someone just wanted an excuse to say they liked Re:Rite of Spring better.

  38. I feel like when we have discussions about drum corps being a rich kids game, etc etc., this is really what we are thinking about. Even when I marched in the late 80's, it was still a "show up, work harder than anyone else and LISTEN, and you'll end up where you are supposed to be." I really believe now that the level of talent and the difficulty in design and what the MM's are having to execute 1. Makes it easier to be picky and 2. Makes it necessary to be picky. If someone wants to argue with me they can, but I would urge people to think about something first. Those who marched in 60's and 70's laid the foundation for us that marched in the 80's and 90's. We then laid new building blocks for those to follow in the 00's and through today. The progression in design, difficulty of drill, electronics etc etc etc is natural. We shouldn't be ashamed of what drum corps is today but rather embrace it and have pride that WE HELPED BUILD THIS. The young men and women are not more talented today than they were "BITD." They do the same things we did...work hard, trust their staff and push themselves to do things they didn't know they could do. I draw a parallel (as I usually do...and yes, I know it's annoying,) to billiards. I played at the pro level for 2 years...a miserable 2 whole years. But I can tell you this. The greats of the 60's through the 90's were no less talented stringing 8 or 9 racks together then the cats now are stringing 8 or 9 racks together. People say that today's top players would wipe the floor with 80's players. The technology has changed in the tools we use now. It's not a different level of talent it's just a slightly different game. The guys (and gals) who played on tour in 80's and 90's laid the foundation for the folks playing at that level today. Yeah we had bigger pockets in the 90's. We also had shafts that were made of this amazing stuff called wood which would deflect the ball off of it's target line. Now they have smaller pockets but shafts made of carbon fiber which don't deflect. Slightly different game...same talent level. I'll try not to digress anymore today but I can't promise anything because it's 8am and I'm at work..on a Sunday.
