I have a solution for everyone who wants to avoid Corona Virus and for kids marching in drum corps, it could help with dues and spending money for the summer. If you walk into a CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, or other chain pharmacy, chances are you will see a help wanted sign. Apply and accept the job, even if it’s part time. My father was a pharmacist and owned his own store. As early as I can remember, I waited on customers who coughed, sneezed, wiped their runny nose then handed me their money. Then there was cleaning up after a kid vomited and cleaned up after other unpleasantries I’ll leave to your imagination. I rarely catch anything worse than a slight cold. I need to watch my blood pressure and heart rate, but that’s family history, not a contagious illness. Working in a drug store builds up your immunity for a lifetime. 👨⚕️ .🤧4 points

So Sanchez had 12 kids in 1979 and Mangione was the uncle to each of them. Sounds like the start of a Mensa exam question. Now let's talk about Land of Make Believe.....3 points

The show must go on! Our 11 minutes of goosebumps can't be denied because of COVID-19. Cases have been confirmed in Solano and Santa Clara counties. Even though the CDC just sent teams to Nor Cal with intensions of quarantines, I will assure you that BD still wins even if they need to phone it in. 🤧3 points

Covid-19 bears watching because it straddles the boundary between SARS / MERS and the common cold. It's very communicable and as a result has fatalities that are already more than twice those of SARS. Responsible parties are worried it won't be "containable" (despite the very aggressive attempts to limit it's spread). It's not influenza so there are no manufacturing facilities in place to rapidly bring a vaccine to market (even if one is found). Strangely the fact that it's so mild for most who contract it is the very thing that makes it more dangerous.3 points

But it also said this, just below your quote: “However, it’s important to note that current global circumstances suggest it is likely that this virus will cause a pandemic. In that case, the risk assessment would be different.” Which gets us back to we just don’t know yet. There’s no reason to think this is turning into Captain Trips but, considering the disruption happening in other corners of the world, it would still be smart, IMO, for DCI to have some initial discussions about possible repercussions for the activity this coming summer.2 points

I originally entered this discussion to consider that the ACTUAL virus might cause the drum corps season to be modified/cancelled. Now I think the ACTUAL virus might not cause the impact and, instead, the hyped fear for unrelated reasons might end up causing a modification of the season.2 points

Reported cases: 62 at last count. Whatever. 325 MILLION people in the US, we're "chatting" around 62 cases, and our flu has killed more than 8,000 people this season and NO ONE calls the "US flu" a pandemic. But, this one is just around the corner. Just wait... This unproven emotional fear may cause the drum corps season to be cancelled as so many conventions in Barcelona. Lucas Oil Stadium could be forced empty during finals week based on unrealized fear.2 points

OK, fine. It's a virus, not a flu. Got it. A calm, dispassionate discussion doesn't contain hyped, aluminum foil scenarios of doom conflated from circumstance exogenous to our own. 62 cases, and counting.2 points

Thus spaketh a certain television game show host, i.e, a member of the media, in 2014: ---"Ebola patient will be brought to the U.S. in a few days - now I know for sure that our leaders are incompetent. KEEP THEM OUT OF HERE!" (7/31/14) ---"The U.S. cannot allow EBOLA infected people back. People that go to far away places to help out are great-but must suffer the consequences!" (8/1/14) ---"The U.S. must immediately stop all flights from EBOLA infected countries or the plague will start and spread inside our 'borders.' Act fast!" (8/2/14) ---"Ebola is much easier to transmit than the CDC and government representatives are admitting. Spreading all over Africa-and fast. Stop flights" (10/2/14) ---"A single Ebola carrier infects 2 others at a minimum. STOP THE FLIGHTS! NO VISAS FROM EBOLA STRICKEN COUNTRIES!" (11/10/14) Those are among more than 150 public, and dare I say, "over hyped" utterances that person, who shall remain nameless, made over the course of about four months. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Anyway, the most important thing everyone can do to impede the spread of COVID-19 is to wash your hands. Lots of people do it wrong. Here's a useful aid for those who need a refresher.2 points

I don’t know if this works or not but I amp up on elderberry airborne all winter. I had a little something at the beginning of December last year but besides that, I’ve been fine. Went to Florida this month, ate out all the time.. Exercise and staying hydrated is always good. And like @N.E. Brigand Said, wash your hands frequently.2 points

OMG - does this mean you can get corona virus from a toilet seat?!?!? Cal down people - first off, it is from China so it is not going to last long. Second, the serious cases seem to happen in the elderly, very young, or otherwise vulnerable (for example - immunosuppressed) individuals. If you have 13 Min & care to see a good but not too technical explanation of what is really going on from a physician who posts on youtube than check this out. But watch it all because there are some really good points he makes at the end.2 points

I got my 2019 DVDs earlier this week and watched the first disc at least a dozen times already. I thought I’d give my reviews of the top 5 one at a time and see what anybody thinks. First the Cavaliers: I was amazed at how much progress we’ve made compared to the last several years. The new uniforms were a shock, but probably overdue at this point considering today’s DCI norms. The Don Warren patch was wonderful and I loved the politically incorrect guy sucking the cigar at the beginning. Talking to Don in 2003 was one of the coolest conversations I’ve had in my life - what a funny, down to earth guy. The 2019 program had some great, intense music throughout. I think the props and backdrop were entirely ineffective though, and distracted from the show. The best visual moments were the rifles being violently thrown far backfield at the end and the mass collapse. What’s with the Scottish narration – it really distracted a mostly great show. Good drill is hard to come by these days, but the Cavies were above average for 2019. Did I see we beat Blue Devils in brass??? Amazing – keep it up guys – a medal in the near future is a strong possibility.1 point

They completed three solid seasons, and have achieved some great things. Boston’s first wave of change has finally crested. No one feels the need to hype or predict. The only things left to know will be evident on the field. In June, we’ll see if they are: - recruiting/retaining the most experienced MMs? - taking artistic risks by creating GE in a variety of unexpected ways? - innovating (and even leading) the activity? These are their next challenges, which are business as usual for the best.1 point

"[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively." (Bold mine)1 point

It does bear repeating that most people who contract this disease will completely recover. Here's a new article in the Washington Post by someone who was on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and bought back to the U.S., where he is in quarantine: "I have the coronavirus. So far, it isn't that bad." He was tested upon leaving the ship, but the results weren't confirmed until after he reached the U.S.; he began developing symptoms on the flight back. After nearly two weeks, he seems to be making a full recovery, although he still tests positive for the virus and remains in quarantine.1 point

Shame for what? Can you or George or anyone be specific about what news reporting or opinion pieces are overhyping this? (PM me some links if you think the pieces are too inflammatory for posting publicly.) In late December, the Chinese government told the scientists who initially identified this as a new SARS-like virus to destroy their research, so that the public wouldn't be spooked. I think you'll agree that was not the right approach! Especially now that more than 2,500 people have died in China, including one of the doctors --aged 34!-- who first raised the alarm and was threatened by his government for doing so. Since then, the U.S. government decided the situation was serious enough to fly a bunch of Americans home from a cruise ship in Japan and to put those people in quarantine on an air force base (although the effort seems to have been botched in several ways). That's not something that would happen for people who had the flu! And the Vice President now has been put in charge of managing the U.S. response, which again is not something that I can see happening for the flu. Surely you're not suggesting that this is all some sort of PR stunt by the government, right? That cruise ship, with 3,700 people aboard, had more than 700 infected, of whom five have now died of this disease. In three months, the virus has spread from China to many dozens of additional countries. The Olympic committee has announced that they are seriously considering canceling the Olympics. None of those events means that DCI will have to cancel anything. But they are sufficiently worrisome that DCI should be monitoring closely. (And there are reasons to think that if the disease does spread here that it would be worse than in some other countries.)1 point

Actually no one has ever produced a vaccine for a coronavirus. Antivirals are drugs that treat those already infected. Please get your facts straight. (antivirals are also ineffective unless introduced within 24-48hrs of contracting the virus. unfortunately most people don't know they're going to get really sick that early) It's funny to watch people on both sides of political spectrum parrot the narratives of their respective parties talking points. As for DCI -- Swine Flu didn't seem to bother them so...1 point

Yow... just read two articles that hit regarding “the flu” (not Coronavirus). My home state released info that deaths are up and multiple deaths in all age groups not just very young and elderly. including age range of potential DCI members to keep it Corps related. And a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist has passed from the flu at age 60. He had his seasonal flu shot but was sickened from a different strain. Should wake up anyone who thinks “one size fits all” applies to respiratory ailments. Be careful folks...1 point

I spotted this on Reddit. Does anybody have any ideas? It looks like it could be Cadets, but the dark color doesn't add up to me. I thought maybe Troopers 2010(ish) but the collar is different and I don't recall them having that color thingy on the right so that is out. Is this a new uniform for 2020? Does anybody know anything?1 point

God complex - A god complex is an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. A person with a god complex may refuse to admit the possibility of their error or failure, even in the face of irrefutable evidence, intractable problems or difficult or impossible tasks. The person is also highly dogmatic in their views, meaning the person speaks of their personal opinions as though they were unquestionably correct.[1] Someone with a god complex may exhibit no regard for the conventions and demands of society, and may request special consideration or privileges.[1] my view: Once (hopefully) the Cadets start moving forward successfully (June??!!) and put a quality product on the field and chart a solid volunteer/financial future he will "move on" since the "evidence" will no longer reinforce the God complex. Unfortunately 2018/19 results have only served to reinforce the self-perspective1 point

Crazy how soon this happened but I think since Bluecoats 2016 show, Stanbury are on the cutting edge of costume design and Greg Logola will provide a cutting edge design compared to other offerings from Michael Cesario and FJM and Band Shoppe. One only need to look at the very literal take on the Goliath Band Shoppe customes last year to see that to reach a higher taste level a change was needed. I'm sure that take won't be made public but it was on people's minds in the activity. At least in my circles..1 point
