  1. I am a biology professor who teaches a good bit of epidemiology, so I so know a a few things. You are correct that nobody knows for sure how this will pan out. But things need to be kept in in perspective - CDC estimates there will be 45,000,000 cases of influenza in the US this year with 61,000 deaths. But that doesn't sell add space on the internet. Also - Covid-19 is an RNA virus. These tend to be rather sloppy replicators, and tend to burn themselves out. Ebola is similar in that respect. The major threat from any of these respiratory viruses is to already vulnerable populations. Yes, we should be vigilant, wash hands, cover coughs, stay home if feeling sick. But, I think that at this point it is a bit premature to cancel the 2020 DCI season. (note how I cleverly swung this back to Drum Corps)

  3. Lol 2020 plans are get back to watching DCI on line to see how much I’m interested. Not sure about DCA live shows as have to get used to my “new normal” (hate that term) as I retired yesterday. My added cost for live shows will be kennel for the wee beastie (16 lb Bichon).

  4. The cost won’t scare me off. We’ve already been over why I’ll leave and it was voted down.

  5. True - there is some evidence to support the idea that "Spanish Flu' actually originated at Ft Riley, Kansas. If today there was the level of press censorship in the US of A prosecuted under the auspices of the Espionage Act of 1917, there would be immense wailing and gnashing of teeth.

  6. Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain. Another possibly relevant factor in the spread of the Spanish flu in 1918 is indicated by its very name: "To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain (such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII). These stories created a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit, giving rise to the pandemic's nickname, 'Spanish flu.'" - - - - - - - - - - China's government ordered the researchers who first recognized the danger of COVID-19 to destroy their research in December, and threatened one doctor who tried to raise a public alarm (he has since died from the disease). Only after another month had gone by did they begin to take it seriously. Iran's government clearly has been lying about the number of infections in that country -- either that or the mortality rate in that country is two orders of magnitude higher than anywhere else in the world. But now that multiple senior government officials have taken ill, they're starting to reveal the true numbers. So contra* what George says above, the very non-political point I've been trying to make is that some world leaders believe (or believed) that it was in their interest to cover up the seriousness of the outbreak. The best way to make an outbreak less serious is, of course, to respond early to reports rather than to bury them. *

  7. That's pretty fantastic. Now if we could just do one on what was wrong with the entire decade of the 80's..that would really be something.

  9. See, that's why the previous generation is tougher than us Gen-X'ers. We just had to survive the Apple 2+ and 300 baud modems. Oh, and Ludwig drums that weighed 763 lbs. Oh!!! And that terrible AhHa "Take on me" music video that no one knows the actual words to.

  14. I did not attribute the quote to NEJM, you did. And my quote didn’t come from USNews. Please respect my opinion as I respect yours, stop attacking, and get back on topic. I’ve stated here that I think DCI should be prepared to wear big pants and consider cancelling the season, so I’m hardly underpreparing for disaster. My business is about odds. I don’t think the odds of that outcome are very high.

  18. Wow, you guys marched corps, know the "news" before it ever hits the stands, know the truth from the fake "news" regardless of personal knowledge of the individual, AND are all doctors or top professionals in the medical field? I can't believe you find time to post on DCP!

  19. But it also said this, just below your quote: “However, it’s important to note that current global circumstances suggest it is likely that this virus will cause a pandemic. In that case, the risk assessment would be different.” Which gets us back to we just don’t know yet. There’s no reason to think this is turning into Captain Trips but, considering the disruption happening in other corners of the world, it would still be smart, IMO, for DCI to have some initial discussions about possible repercussions for the activity this coming summer.

  20. Flu deaths are preventable with vaccines. There’s no vaccine against corona virus, and the death count keeps going up.

  21. you seem to be wanting to make this a very political conversation - no one has said "they don't count" but when counting cases contracted/derived IN the USA the ones from the cruise shouldn't be included obviously the 50 y/o patient who sadly passed away had compromised health - which is the case with the vast majority of the deaths I listened carefully to each official in today's press conference - each continued to explain the risk to a typical American remains very low Re: drum corps - I still believe this will run its course long before we see impact to the summer schedule/tour "wash your hands" remains the most prudent advice

  22. Pudding is good. Waffles are better. Pudding on waffles is best. But [attempt at] humor aside - the various HxNx flues can indeed be serious (the Hx & Nx refer to specific surface proteins on various strains; there are 16H's & 9 N's that mix & match). Pandemic influenza of 1918 was also H1N1 & it did tend to hit younger, healthier individuals; and very crowded troop ships carrying soldiers back from WW1 helped transport it world-wide. It is estimated the 1/3 of the world population came down with the disease; with 40-50 MILLION deaths. That is in the same ballpark as the number killed in WW2 (including the Holocaust).

  23. I had an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier until she passed away about a month ago at the age of almost 17. She was the sweetest and scariest dog I've ever owned. Plus, she was funny and would eat literally anything that crossed her snout including butterflies and rocks.

  29. And add how much longer it takes to recover from trips and sitting in a stadium. Things I never would have thought of when I started lol

  30. Jim - I pretty much no longer attend drum corps events in person. It has nothing at all to do with the cost, including ticket price, of the experience. For me, it’s all about value. Values not monetary. My interest in drum corps remains high. I enjoy viewing and listening. Just no longer value the time and effort required to actually be there, at the stadium. I’m now older, more lazy, and less tolerant of crowds and everything that goes along with that. My subscription to Flo, my blu-rays and downloads are of greater value now. I’m still very much ‘in the game,’ just play along differently than earlier in life.

  31. Hello, I am conducting a study to find out how much DCI tuition costs have risen over the years. Do your best to remember and please fill out the form as accurately as possible. If you have marched more than three years you can submit another form but skip the section for the first year and fill out 2 and 3 as if they were 4 and 5. https://forms.gle/F3NFJL13WBj5GnWQ8 Thanks for your help! I will post results when done.

  34. When we do our annual tour, we take in about 7-8 shows in 14 days, travelling about 2400 miles. All shows are outdoors. We refuse to attend indoor shows. The tickets have all been paid for in advance. In the last 10 years we have been rained out maybe 4 times. That's about 5% of the shows. Our tours also include gourmet dining and the other costs of being on the road for 14 days. I am not going to pay for insurance for a 5% chance of a cancelled show. One note. I consider Lisle a gourmet dining destination because Chicago, with its wonderful dining scene, is close enough for us.😉

  36. So this quote also does not appear in this article in the New England Journal of Medicine to which you appear to attribute it (since you were responding to karuna's observation that your earlier quote isn't found in that article). Rather, it appears in this article in U.S. News & World Report. Also, for someone whose primary complaint in this thread has been that people are making too much of something that may never come to pass, it's pretty bold of you to use this citation about what "may" happen as evidence that all manner of things shall be well.

I posted the numbers just as a point of reference, with no bias one way or the other. They were literally put there as stats. Nothing more. Nothing less. But by all means, go ahead and assume what I meant, and reacting to the post.
