  1. I'm challenging every DCP member to post your support here. My pledge: I will give every dollar of my refunded Friends membership, plus my refunded finals week ticket costs, directly back to the corps. Approximately $4,400. Further, I will pledge immediately up to $2,600 additional contributions to individual corps. Total $7,000 because I LOVE this activity and what it does for young musicians. I'm also thankful to John Donovan and all the mods for giving us this sandbox in which we can stay connected to it.

  2. I disagree.. I marched a corps that folded but still had eligibility left. I think the sensible thing to do is extend for those contracted ageouts for whom this was it.

  6. Although it would be easy to proclaim that drum corps was dispatched on this day, that's not written in stone. There will be hundreds of people, facing withering odds, working hour after hour through turmoil and despair to save their individual corps and the activity as a whole. Executive directors and staff, board members, volunteers, crew, and yes, even the marching members are about to throw themselves headlong at the massive problem of JUST SURVIVING, and into projects, pleas, campaigns, and car washes to gather every ounce of support and help they can get. Answer the call! These will be the heroes. The front line, boots on the ground, get it done crowd that has built lives, careers, reputations, and memories on the experience and life-lessons provided by drum corps and made possible via the hard work of someone else - will largely lead the effort today. These will be the people we honor then, and that our children and students will honor then, in the same way that we honor those who started it in 1972 and created it to be what it is today. It will take all of their effort and blood, and much of their money. I will count my name among them and I hope you do, too. This is the place to honor those heros. If you hear of an amazing job done in the effort to save a corps, or to help save another corps from failure, or a creative or radical new effort that succeeded, or went way above an beyond in "Sounds Crazy Might Work", post those stories here. Cooking meals for phone banks, spending summer not on vacation, but taking the family to car washes and bake sales. Post those stories here. Years from now, if the activity survives at all, these experiences will be teaching plans for those to come. Let's pass along those experiences as if the activity actually learned from them, and let's honor the leaders, teachers, volunteers and members who will carry the message forward. Please, join in, volunteer, make the call, send the email and make the magic happen. And when you hear of great and inspiring efforts both menial and headline, post them here. (And please, leave the snark and attacks for other threads.)

  8. Sucks but it's the right call. Already made some donations, even if they were small, to some of the corps I have supported before. Lots of great leaders out there that I'm sure will get the activity through this, even though it's gonna be hard. Here's to 2021.

  9. I think EVERYONE currently under contract should get a 1-year extension, as my son is not an age-out.

  11. Why does each corps even have to issue a statement at all? What do you need to know at this moment that the DCI release didn’t tell you? Cut them some slack.

  12. Actually, that is quite literally what we do ALL THE TIME. Want to drink as a 17 year old? No, because you're not an adult. Vote as a 14 year old? No, because you're not an adult. A 23 year old who'd want to spend the summer doing something that is better suited to high school and college aged kids needs to kick themselves in the schlatz and get on with their life.

  13. Lost in the "extended eligibility" discussion...what about kids just coming of age/experience/proficiency, that would have been in the mix for a spot in 2021? Now, the natural flow of available spots has been disrupted by the change in policy. Gotta feel good for those age-outs that get a second chance, but it's going to limit/destroy a year of eligibility for others. I really doubt that all potential age-outs will still march next year, as life goes on and forward, but I feel bad for the kids unintentionally caught up in the situation. Maybe they could bump, or ignore membership limits for one year, allowing an equal amount of spots to the "grandfathered" members? Just a thought.

  14. It calls out in the article that 2020 age outs get a bonus year.

  15. I was just referring to Jim’s post. A quote from Benjamin Franklin that I use a lot, because I plan and organize to the extreme. I was in no way reflecting on DCI’s planning process.

  16. Just a thought, rather than trying to increase the number of kids that can march in a corps and prop up World Class Corps, what we should do is push new members to Open Class corps and prop up their numbers in 2021. World Class units could adopt an Open Class sister corps and create an education partnership that allows the corps to spend time together and give the Open Class members a taste of World Class life. They could share some curriculum and Ike to two opportunities to perform standstills together. Just an idea...

  18. Blue Devils post to MM's Dear 2020 Blue Devil Members, We are writing to you to share important information in these unprecedented and difficult times. We know that your daily lives have been disrupted with changes in how you attend school or work, and interact with your family. We understand that with this disruption, it brings a great deal of uncertainty. We acknowledge that Drum Corps and its related activities are extremely important to you. We also understand that everyone was committed to an amazing 2020 summer and you have made considerable sacrifices to participate. Every decision we make, we consider you and all the individuals involved with our organization. We have been closely following and adhering to the guidance of the CDC and WHO, and we are committed to providing the safest possible environment, now and through these challenging times. Global health and economic conditions are currently affecting our ability to operate BDPA programs amidst these challenging circumstances. After much deliberation with the Drum Corps International Voting Membership, the decision has been made to cancel the 2020 DCI summer tour. We at BD Performing Arts agree and support this decision. As a result, we are cancelling the Blue Devils 2020 summer tour and suspending all in-person activities for the immediate future. This includes BD International. Diablo Wind Symphony students, please stay up to date on the DWS web page about end of season events and auditions. John Maltester will be in contact. We firmly believe that these conditions will not persist indefinitely. We will continue to work on all options available to us during this time. We intend to use the remainder of the 2020 calendar year to prepare for the future. Many of you that have participated with the Blue Devils know we have never given up in any situation, and we will not start now. Look back on your many years of involvement. We all will draw on that strength of determination and conviction. We won’t back down. Ever. We will rally around each other at this time like we have done in the past, and be there for each other now in these uncertain times. You and everyone involved in the Blue Devils have always risen to every challenge we have faced, and we are determined to collectively meet this one confidently and unafraid. DCI has passed a rule change for all members whose last year of eligibility was the 2020 season. These members will have their eligibility extended and will be able compete in the 2021 season. This measure will only apply to those participants “aging-out” in 2020 and shall not further extend to those scheduled to become ineligible in 2021 or beyond. We are aware that this information will create questions. We will have a Zoom meeting at 5:00pm PDT Thursday, March 26 with the Blue Devils A Corps; and Friday, March 27 at 5:00pm with the Blue Devils B Corps to personally meet with all of you and answer questions. Please see you email from us in your inbox with details. We have also developed an FAQ page. The Blue Devils have been defined by very specific philosophies. As we look forward, it is appropriate to look back on the words of our founder, Jerry Seawright, when he was moving us from a drum and bell corps to the current Blue Devils: ”We prefer the challenges to a guaranteed existence and the thrill of fulfillment to the stale and calm of conforming. We have never cowered before any master nor bent to any threat. It is our heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid.” — Jerry Seawright — We are here for you if you have any questions or just want, or need to talk to someone we have included our cell numbers and email addresses so you can reach out to us anytime. We are here for you. Please do your part with social distancing and washing your hands. Even though you are young and healthy, you could be carrying the virus to someone you love or do not even know. We will be in consistent communication through the spring and summer. Please be safe and stay healthy. Thank you Your Blue Devils family

  21. There is a thing called DCA. You can march till the cows come home. No need to raise the age limit.

  22. 22 or 23? Hell, make it 30, since we're being told that today's 20-somethings are just overgrown teenagers incapable of handling adult lives on their own. 😎 A kid who was contracted and would have aged out this summer has a reason to ask for extension, under the circumstances. Everyone else, not so much, though the wording makes it sound like everyone currently contracted will get a bonus year (which makes no sense).

  23. They can solve the problem by simply not allowing age-outs an extended year. Making it permanent is not a good idea.

  25. 1. Save lives. 2. Help family. 3. Help something you believe in strongly. For me this will be Church followed by DrumCorps. WGI will survive it, there are already hopes and dreams about 2021. Drum corps will survive. Some will expire. Some will be born out of the ashes. The Rocketeers have already disbanded and put the word out that their instruments are available for donation to other groups. Keep the lights on will be the battle cry for some. Best wishes to all, there is a lot of time in between now and next summer to see how it all pans out. Looking forward to the next time I can smell summer and hear drumlines warming up when I pull into a show lot. It will be a great day.

  32. Yes. Obviously. I already emailed a corps I bought tickets from to let them know that I don't want a refund, and hope they will use the money as a contribution instead. Hopefully lots of people will do the same, and corps will make it easy to do that when communicating with people about the refunds they're clearly entitled to.

  36. This! And this is why I'm becoming more active on these boards as of late. This topic is now at the forefront of my mind going into 2021 due to the fact that my youngest son, and the only other musician in the family, who is 16 (will be 17 in summer '21) planned to march with a world class corps next year, and both of us are still hopeful it can happen. As we have been following these events closely, we are now met with an odd predicament: Will there be enough spots open in 2021 for my son to audition for a corps if most members who would have marched this year are automatically guaranteed a spot for 2021? I completely understand the difficult situation we are in. But my son is a strong trumpet player, has dreams of marching drum corps and following in my footsteps. What if he is good enough to get a spot, but is turned away because the roster is already "filled" based on "last year's auditions"? Are corps doing this guaranteed rollover now going to say to anyone who had hoped to march in 2021, "We only have "X" number of spots available due to the 2020 carryover" ? Or "I'm sorry but we won't have any trumpet auditions this year because we already have all 25 from 2020 returning". Are there any other parents of hopeful soon-to-be members who share concerns like these? I know that 'it is what it is', but it's going to be difficult to explain this to my son if, in fact, he is unable to even audition for the corps he wants to march with if there aren't any spots available.

  45. I, personally, believe this is when human beings are at their best and I can't wait to read the inspiring stories you will tell as this effort unfolds. I have been privileged to witness official meetings of a corps BoD and I have seen the crushing looks on their faces (via amazing video-conference software!) yet hear the determination in their voices. They've faced incredible decisions in the last 10 days that include ACTUALLY surviving the coronavirus and, at the same time, saving their beloved drum corps. These folks signed their names to the line and put their volunteer efforts on the table in the most important of ways - with their honor. Gosh, the stress. A good friend of mine told me a story of a top-5 drum corps leader who, upon having the keys handed to him, was told "Don't F--- it up!". My GOSH, the STRESS - for their corps and for the activity they lead. I want to simply honor these Board members and volunteers for bearing under this decision and placing yourself directly in the seats of responsibility. Your guidance, your leadership, your decision-making, your "brotherhood", and your willingness to commit your blood, money, and honor is truly inspiring. It is that which we teach those in our care. Thank you, drum corps' leadership. You've earned my trust.
