  1. I can think of a certain corps from Canton that would like a say in the matter! šŸ¤— āœŒļø

  2. Actually, Dr. Fauci, The National Institute of Infectious Diseases, the WHO, & the CDC may disagree with you. Some research says it can be suspended in the air as an aerosol for up to 3 hours. 3. The US averages about 10,000 drunk driving deaths per year. How is that ā€œabout the same?ā€ And when was the last time we had hospitals over capacity because of drunk driving accidents? Have drunk driving accidents been doubling every three days?

  5. I must be missing something here. RIght now, many of us cannot "spend money where we want". Many businesses are closed by government order. Travel restrictions and advisories limit our movement. Some face quarantine or isolation, a far greater such restriction. This time is a reminder that as humans, a species vulnerable to viruses, one of our necessary defenses against a pandemic is to restrict movement and association... to self-isolate on individual, local and national levels. It is a reminder that individuals, locales and nations should therefore aspire to be more self-sufficient so that they CAN self-isolate when necessary. Suggesting that when this is over, we support our local businesses, or even extend that support nationwide, is not "ethnocentrism". If it is, then I guess supporting Drum Corps International, a US-based circuit whose participating corps are almost exclusively US in origin, is "ethnocentrism" as well. That makes this whole forum "really gross".

  6. Just saw that the center where the Detroit auto show was to be held will be converted too. Small irony is was just in Detroit and their auto show used to be in January but just too cold so it was changed Also bravo to Army Corps of Engineers for the work they are doing around the country. Have to give a shout out as thatā€™s where my dad served

  10. Those are stupid rules. It counts as a three-peat if it occurs in three competitive years.

  11. IMO it does not matter whether Blue Devils get the elusive three peat, They are the most decorated corps in the history of DCI, and have finished in the top five for over 40 years and have won the DCI World Championship title more than any other performing group. That says it all.

  14. The opposition I see seems to be based on two factors. 1. Rules are rules. The age rule has been the single most hard-fought, controversial rule in drum corps history. Several of our greatest-ever corps have had their seasons snuffed out over it, while another such corps settled for second place behind a corps that was forgiven for two overage marchers. None of the age-eligible kids in those corps were offered a bonus year. Rules are there for reasons. If there were no reasons, then we could just repeal the rule. 2. Nothing is fair. Not saying this to be mean - just stating an observation. Trying to make it fair for some people inevitably makes it unfair for someone else. It would be unfair if 2020 ageouts were denied their final/only season in the manner of current events. But it then becomes unfair to give them special treatment with another year of eligibility, where the class of 2020 takes spots away from the class of 2021. And no matter how many more exceptions we make, whoever is left out gets short-changed. We could permanently bump the age limit up one year, and it would still be retroactively unfair to the class of 2019, 2018... all DCI alumni. An exception for the coronavirus shutdown is unfair when the World War II shutdown of VFW/AL state and national field competitions had no such provisions.

  15. His point was one of perspective. About 2 million people die in America each year of all causes. You cherry pick information to make things look one way, others do the opposite. 675,000 Americans died in the 1918 influenza pandemic. Adjusting for todayā€™s population that would be about 2 million if this virus ran the same course. So yes, 80,000 would be a small number. Miraculous in my opinion. Yes, more than 9/11, or Pearl Harbor, or the Titanic or whatever you wish to point out. Less than the Holocaust, less than the Civil War, less than either world war, less than the Armenian genocide or Rwandan genocide. We could go back and forth but it is rather pointless I think.

  19. Question to my fellow BD honks........what is more important to you, BD getting the elusive three peat, or continuing their insane run of top 2 finishes, which now stands at 13 in a row. To put this into perspective, the 2021 age-outs would have been 6-7 years old last time Devs was third or worse! All the other corps might get an occasional title here and there, but let's keep it 100, like it or not its BDs world and we are all living in it.

  28. Being American is not ethnocentric! There are no ethnic Americans. It's not gross to love one's country or origin over others. In fact, it's the sineu that binds us. It's the reason most people on the planet want to come here.

  31. Financial impact is unknown I guess. We are all assuming that since most corps live hand-to-mouth that many might go under. Hope not. Also I hope we can put some more meat on this bone and get a better understanding of the financial situation.

  36. One factor that may work against the majority of bands and corps is that the Tresona ruling was about pop tunes with many different hands in the pot. I'd venture the majority of music performed by corps and competitive bands is from the concert band or symphonic realm. Only one composer. How many symphonic and concert band works have the layers of rights holders that a pop tune might? There is probably one publisher for that composition. This ruling may work in favor of bands who play pop music to the detriment of those who play symphonic or concert band literature. One way around this may be to shoehorn a show concept having nothing to do with the source material (commonplace these days) and cite fair use, but if a band wanted to do a show of Shostakovich 5th with no underlying unrelated theme, I'm not certain if they could claim fair use. Thoughts?

  37. Perspective would include the info that traffic accidents, for example, aren't contagious. Driving by an accident and gawking doesn't automatically make anyone who saw the accident a high risk for causing an accident themselves, which would only cause even more people to have accidents. This is a highly contagious air-borne and surface borne virus with a long incubation period in which people who have been infected feel nothing, while they're out there spreading the virus to others. When it kicks in, the fatality rate for those over the age of 30 is approaching 5% in this country - magnitudes more deadly than the routine flu (which has a short incubation period, and usually sidelines the victim before they can cause others to become infected). Add in that crashing the health care system will result in other deaths as patients can't get care for more run of the mill illnesses and accidents. The way out of the situation is through quarantining and allowing the thing to run its course in as small a way as possible, not by saying "well, you're gonna die of something anyway", which is the underpinnings of the denier camp's position.

  38. Highly doubt it. First, just because they are contracted, doesn't mean that corps won't require them to attend all of their paid camps in the fall as usual. Second, there will still be just as many auditioning for however many spots there are that remain - and there will be spots. I've seen 50 kids tryout for 2 openings on a snare line before. Those that want to march drum corps will show up looking for their chance, and enjoy the audition camps even if they don't get there. And my prediction is that only about 30% of the "grandfathered" age-outs will actually end up taking advantage of it. Many will have graduated and be heading off into the real world of employment, and summers off are no longer an option. Others will, just as every year, decide it's time to call it quits based on money, time, relationships, etc.

  39. We went for a drive today to Geneva, Illinois. A charming little town, full of locally owned businesses. Restaurants, shops....ordinarily, the streets would have been packed and no street parking to be found. Ghost town today. I am very worried for these businesses. Support your local businesses when this is over.

  40. YES! šŸ˜ with either, i'll still be happy. Yes it's BD world indeed, that is how it is like it or not. Any group going for the gold have to rise to the occasion and best BD. Even when BD don't have the most popular or liked show , or having a challenging year, they are still dangerously great. That says alot about a group. That is just one point out of many what made it BD world.

  47. Just a thought, rather than trying to increase the number of kids that can march in a corps and prop up World Class Corps, what we should do is push new members to Open Class corps and prop up their numbers in 2021. World Class units could adopt an Open Class sister corps and create an education partnership that allows the corps to spend time together and give the Open Class members a taste of World Class life. They could share some curriculum and Ike to two opportunities to perform standstills together. Just an idea...
