  3. It will pass. There will come a day when money is good and the thing you most long for is free time. So maybe now is a chance to do things you will wish you had done someday but never found the time.

  4. This is probably TMI, and way too long, but here goes anyway... So, I had another potential employer tell me this morning (this is the 3rd so far) that they would like to bring me on, but have no idea when that would actually be. So... we’re still hanging out in San Antonio- finishing up packing- while the new house sits empty in Ft. Worth. On the plus side, we’ve got food and are still healthy. (Knock on wood.) I am truly thankful for that. But I’m also going a little crazy inside. I don’t think our builder is going to be in a rush to sell the house out from underneath us— lots of people are stuck right now. And our finance guy seems reasonably certain that, as soon as I can show a paycheck, we can get a loan put together. However... everyone has told me it needs to be a salaried position, with a base minimum. (Not commission.) Normally, this would not be an insurmountable task. In fact, two employers have wanted to offer just that. But the conversation I just had this morning has me a little worried. Basically, he said that they, along with everybody else, can only offer straight commission right now. (Originally, it was a salaried position.) He went on to say that, with most dental schools having graduation next month, and tons of people in the same position, the market is going to be flooded with out of work dentists and businesses are going to be just offering straight commission, take-it-or-leave it. Just pick a warm body and plug them into place. And no one has any idea how busy they’ll be when they do start up. It’s a mess. Obviously, we never had any idea something like this was going to happen when we started planning the move last year. Who does? So we’re now trying to plan, with one (maybe both) hands tied behind our backs. Do we try to extend our current lease at a higher cost? Give up on the house and find another temporary situation? Ugh. Put most everything into storage, stay at the in-laws (mostly) empty house temporarily? (An even longer story, and double ugh.) Get a monthly rate hotel and hope the job situation works out so we can close by summer? Who knows. And when I do start back, will it be safe? Most dentist offices don’t have sufficient PPE (from what I’ve seen) and we do some of the highest risk, aerosol producing procedures of any medical providers. I’m only in my 40’s but I also have type II diabetes. Getting this thing could be really bad for me and the prospect, frankly, scares the hell out of me. (And let’s not even get into the stats given at today’s press conference...) So yeah, I definitely could use some encouragement right now. I’m guessing a lot of us do. I’m still taking walks every day, doing some reading, stuff like that. And I’m still looking at all the positives.(Which there definitely are!) So, if you’re feeling stressed or down, you’re not the only one. Hang it there! And this too shall pass.

  6. OK. I've been watching some videos from 89, and just saw Velvet Knights. I'm allowed to say this because I was 17 years old in 1989... That Chiquita Banana girl at the end is GORGEOUS.

  11. Jim emerged from the office. He said he did lose a bit of his sense of taste and smell. He said he didn’t feel well for close to two weeks but not terrible. I didn’t have any symptoms. We did fly but we didn’t sit by anyone else because Jim’s employer has a program where you pay for coach but you get first class. We didn’t know. I thought he had a cold. I hope he didn’t infect anyone.

  12. Quoting myself (don’t you love it when people do that?) - etched into my memory - 2006 DCI finals, Friday night, Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Project - everyone in the crowd standing, and it was a big crowd, not many had left following the last corps (Cavies) performance. When they were playing Through The Eyes Of Love, my then 7 year old son, who was looking around at the crowd, asked, “Dad, why are all those old people crying?” I don’t know if he noticed the tears in my eyes at that moment. I was choked up and couldn’t answer. But he was right. A bunch of old men sobbing like babies. And I would do it again anytime, anyplace. Nostalgia is a powerful force.

  13. This might be an unpopular opinion; but I would rather have the Blue Devils entertain the h**l out of me than win a title.

  15. Very true lol. Choral music was my first love. I had a voice teacher in college named Lynn Holdalski. She told me once that I had more natural talent than anyone she knew, but the work ethic of a slug. I'm pretty sure that was my music career summed up lol.

  19. here is the most interesting interpretation of the opinion: This could be something DCI, DCA, BOA, WGI units can use to expand what they can use and how much they spend on licensing. It will be interesting if the activity can use this new precedence to "renegotiate" any agreements with Tresona...maybe capitalize on this decision...assuming it holds up upon appeal if Tresona appeals.

  31. Used to live in a mobile home while saving up for house payments. Still had first couch I ever bought and it was second hand. Chocolate (####) brown leatherette. Bottom cushion was from a patio couch and covered with brown cloth. Girlfriend hated it and I finally order a new one. Day after scheduled delivery she stopped by and the POS was still there. “What happened?”. “well I found out something new about mobile homes. The door is slightly more narrow and.... they couldn’t get the couch through the door.”.

  40. Ed, I am optimistic. Even if the total number of DCA corps shrinks by a few more in number, due to this crisis, there is still enough “meat on those bones” to continue on for several more years. DCA can fulfill its same mission, the ability to bring education and entertainment joy to many, even if its geographic region of operation is condensed. I believe there IS time for DCA to remain a contribution to our culture. 🇺🇸

  44. To be fair, they had yamaha badges on them too lol. My thought at the time, was that they were Yammy shells with no holes drilled....just a badge / air vent inside a Premier frame. They had Yamaha throw offs from the old "Field Corps" 12 luggers as well from what I remember. But they had the warm (hollow,) deep (clunky) sound of the Premier HTS. I will say this though....you could crank the s### out of 'em. Instead of the old 80s big hair "tease it to Jesus" we used to say "crank it to the moon." We even double rimmed one once to see if we could make it collapse....but we only managed to break the drum key. My HTS sounds great BTW. But only because I worked for a drum builder for a while and learned how to recut bearing edges.

  45. I dont see it as unpopular, it's your opinion and I respect it. I would say that since 2014, BD has gotten alot of love and has been entertaining. I am basing that on the 2010-2013 years on DCP. Anyone who was around back then remembers how volatile it was for BD and anyone who supported them.

  46. I figure you guys are probably aware, but just in case. The Madison Scouts has decided to pursue classes with staff and current members throughout the summer. They are also hoping for a week or two in late July or August to bring the corps together to get somewhat of a summer experience. I thought the email and video were excellent. My kid will be participating and in return, contracts will be extended to 2021. Still a Madison Scout family socially distant! 💚⚜️🤍
