  1. I also find it interesting how many will be 1st in line if kids ( theirs or others) are put in danger, even the slightest bit, We hear it even here all the time YET I watch these political rallies, protests , whatever you want to call them daily and their young kids all there. Seems like child abuse to me. I guess those who abuse in most cases don't think they are....Just sayin

  2. What I love about these lists is how few of the shows chosen actually won. I think it's a great demonstration that winning is great, but doing something powerful and memorable is even better.

  4. Ellipses just to allow me to safely note that the events you described happened on the date of DCI Finals that year. On that day, someone here made some good points about Cavaliers' 2017 show, which I hadn't much cared for and still don't love, that did help me to appreciate its meaning.

  6. Again my deepest sympathy. It is quite sad, and no stats, charts, slight of hand and mouth on information changes the reality of all of this. Can or is there an over- reach by some? Maybe, BUT I would rather extra care, rather than less.

  9. My wife has RA. She takes a very expensive drug and Methotrexate to keep the inflammation at bay. But sometimes, like now for example, she has a flare that leaves her in tears. She can’t take anti inflammatories or steroids because they may compromise her liver. The only thing that she can take that brings relief is medical marijuana. Thankfully the dispensaries are considered essential services.

  10. I think the challenge is that this is such an unprecedented situation (except for the very few people older than 101) that our minds just weren't prepared to conceive how bad this could get and how drastic the necessary steps to stop the spread would have to be. We'll be lucky if don't break 100,000 deaths just from this first wave--despite all that's been done. It's still not clear that U.S. deaths have reached their peak yet (fingers crossed that they have). Imagine telling people back in January that 90% of the country would have to be locked down for a month or two to save hundreds of thousands or millions of lives, and that even having done that we'd probably lose this many people. It's hard to grasp, and I get why some people still can't believe it. That said, there definitely is some overlap between some of the people currently protesting stay-at-home orders and those at previous protests like the one you mention and in some of the rhetoric being used about the orders (search for pictures from the recent protest in Columbus, for an obvious example). One of the nation's worst outbreaks is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where more than 600 people who work at a pork-processing plant have tested positive -- that's out of 3,700 people who work there. I'm reading comments, even from people who should know better, attributing that infection rate to the fact that the workers are immigrants who live with their many relatives in small apartments. Way to blame the people who process our food (this plant alone processes 5% of the nation's pork) but apparently aren't paid enough to afford larger homes for their families. Meanwhile, here in Ohio, our numbers are up in part because of a prison in Marion (well known for its drum corps competitions back in the day), where most or all of the inmates have been tested -- and that one prison now accounts for 16% of the state's cases. Some people are dismissing that because most of the sick there are criminals, but even setting aside the fact that their sentences didn't include "pandemic virus", there are people who work in prisons!

  13. I’m thinking along the lines that the non-essential closures, stay in place, mask, social distancing, etc guidelines/rules are to protect most of us from the idiots. People too clueless to do what they should are one thing but way too many people do the opposite because “I’m the boss of myself and no one is going to tell me what to do”. Only go out in public to the store and way too many people without masks have either a “go ahead, give me crap about not wearing, I dare you”, “I’m a man and a tough MF’er so no mask for me” or just look like they are in another world. Believe it was MI where a man was in a protest crowd without a mask saying he’s young and strong so hopes he gets the virus. He was with his elementary school aged daughter saying it’s ok as she’s young and strong too. edit: just see Guv Wolf of PA wants a structured reopening May 8. Ironic date as that would be slightly after incubation period if anyone caught coronavirus at today’s protest

  14. Oh yes, yes, yes. You mean like the anti-racism student that died at the hands of a Neo-Nazi at "Unite The Right" Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017? Yeah, no. Neo-Nazi Racism is not my idea of true "civil unrest". I agree that we need to get back as close to normal as soon as this virus is under control, but these protesters are reckless at best. Some protesters have called for the firing of Dr. Faci & called the entire COVID-19 a political hoax. The only way to restart our economy is with every type of MASS TESTING of just about everyone that goes out into society. (work force, students, recreational activities, protesters, etc.) There are (3) three current polls show the majority of the public think the protesters are out of line and we do not need to rush into a reckless act of opening our economy too soon. The polls are running approx. 65% to 35% in that manner. Those polls were conducted by both right & left leaning organization. You cannot argue with the medical science & the data. Listen to what it screaming right now. Of course, our country is in different places right now as to the spread but our numbers have been for the most part kept in check. But that could all change in the next couple of weeks. https://www.npr.org/2019/06/28/736915323/neo-nazi-who-killed-charlottesville-protester-is-sentenced-to-life-in-prison P.S. I have a couple of relatives that think this is all a (D) hoax. You know, they're not real smart...

  15. After seeing health care workers protesting the protesters in CO and PA I’d say if they were protesting without masks and no social distancing.... bleep em they should stay home... they’re putting health care workers at risk by taking a chance to catch it... edit: that is stay home to recover after catching it, not put health care workers at further risk

  21. The “concert” was put on for the exact reason they said it was for. Because you wish some other reason for it, does not change what it was for; giving first responders, nurses, doctors, hospital works and such, a small break. Their day to day does not compare to anyone else’s except maybe the victims themselves. The concert was not a forum for the economy, the unemployed or the inconvenienced people asked to stay at home. If you have a problem with it that’s a you problem, that the first step to fixing, starts in front of a mirror. The concert gave some of the intended audience some desperately needed encouragement, which is also what this thread is about. I encourage you to be kinder in your support of the concert’s particular audience.

  22. It's supposed to be in the low 90's this weekend but no one can be on the beach no matter how much they "social distance".........in Orange County, CA.!? After being cooped up for the last month +? There won't be enough police to arrest people.

  23. Actually my dog groomer is allowed to operate... kind of. Only allowed to work on dogs that would get matted if not groomed for a while. Had to pass a social distancing check to be allowed to open. But most dog owners are concerned about nails not being cut. Can’t go in the shop so hand over dog from the car outside. Pet stores and place that makes pet food considered essential. on what’s left of my hair decided no beard trimming until this is over. Will probably be Dirty Santa by then... Niece is stylist and place is closed, her hubby makes dog food so working 🤭

  26. I remember that night, I was in the Crossmen drumline. We had already performed and changed. Members were wondering all over the place, in the stadium, parking lot, talking walks etc. When they announced the scores we were literally taken by surprise. No one really knew what to do, I don't think we had played an encore that season, or in several seasons. We were in shorts, tee shirts and flip flops. World went around quickly to meet back at the truck we were going to play. The staff told us to grab any corps jackets or Crossmen clothes we had and meet up. We warmed up in the arc and let a run of the show fly. I don't think it was that good, and some members were not in top form as they were already "relaxing" for the night. I'm not even sure if everyone even got word we won or were doing an encore. A version of this story comes up at every alumni get together with people from 90, a great memory.

  34. Thanks for the memory jog. Discovered NL in college thanks to my room mate late 1977. Never missed an issue until it went under. Lol read an issue on an 8 hour bus ride back to college. No one sat next to me.... Had an issue with all covers up to that time. 40 years and still remember the write up for the infamous “if you don’t buy this magazine, we’ll shoot this dog” cover. Write up was “you did, we didn’t, quit worrying about it” 🙀

  35. Where you get these statistics and projections matter. Not all statistics are as valid as others. Not all studies are as valid as others. People don’t get properly educated on how to critically assess not only the sources of their info, but also the information itself. The hydroxychloroquine BS is an example of that.

  36. Exactly. The poaching accusation is old and and tired. Did BD poach when a large chunk of Spirit's drum line followed Tom Float to Concord? Is it poaching when staff moves to a corps where they actually get paid? Please.......Star/Cook haters need to sing a new #### tune already. The real irony here is how many of us have said we'd start a corps if we won the lottery? A #### ton, that's how many! Bill Cook simply HAD the money to do so, and put that money where his mouth was. All the hate is jealously, nothing more. Bill didn't march the show in 85...nor did Mason, DeLucia, etc....a group of largely inexperienced kids did....and they made finals all on their own. Some people need to STFU about it already.

  37. But it's not false or disingenuous at all. It's what would happen if business as usual went on. And yes, some people were advising just that. Herd immunity! I quoted a DCP poster who said that it was ridiculous that all "sporting and entertainment events [were] cancelled, [and] schools [were] closed" in response to COVID19. That person's reasoning? Swine Flu killed 12,000 Americans *over the course of a year* and we didn't do those things. (Though there were some very limited small-scale closures.) And that was before stay-at-home orders were issued in most places. That person wasn't responding to those measures but was complaining that even just shutting down events and schools was too much -- apparently even if they were to save as many as 12,000 lives. Now we've seen COVID19 has killed more than 30,000 Americans in 47 days, and we're on our way to reach twice that number. (The past 24 hours have the most deaths yet. Also, while New York has finally done the right thing and started to record *some* of the large number of people, vastly exceeding the daily average of the past five years, who died at home but were never tested, most jurisdictions still are not doing this, so the real death count still exceeds the official count by a fair bit. And yes, comparisons like that are the way that these things are normally counted. That Swine Flu count was calculated after the fact by comparing to previous years' averages, not by counting each death that had tested positive in real time.) Some hospitals are right at their breaking points. Bodies are piling up in spare rooms. (Seriously. I can provide pictures if necessary.) A fair number of doctors and nurses have fallen ill or died. (Not something that normally happens because of the flu!) They're wearing garbage bags because they ran out of protective equipment. But in the hardest-hit jurisdictions, so far, we seem to have done *just barely enough* to avoid cause health care collapses. One recently discovered fact helped: ventilators are less helpful than had been believed. (They're still needed, just not as much as expected.) People whose blood oxygen levels have dropped so low that all the books and training says they ought to be on ventilators are often better off without, because of the weird way this strange virus acts in the lungs. But again: we're going to have five times as many deaths from this outbreak, in one-fourth the time, as we did for Swine Flu. And those are 60,000 souls *on top of* those who died from the flu this year. The one disease didn't replace the other. And all of that happened even though we imposed extensive social distancing measures. It would be so much worse if we hadn't! This is just baffling: when some people here claimed that COVID19 was being overhyped ("get back to me in two or three weeks", said someone here in the last week of February) because the swine flu was worse, or the regular flu season (in which 60,000 deaths is a bad year) is worse, even though both of those claims have proved to be false, that wasn't worth disputing. But when other people here warned that it was going to be much worse, and then when they noted that subsequent events bore those predictions out, that's somehow misleading. That burgundy line on the chart is what would happen had we done nothing. (Which would lead to somewhere between 500,000 and 2 million Americans dead, by the way. Yes, that's a big uncertain spread, because there's lots we just don't know about this virus yet.) That "efforts start working" point on the chart? If we're lucky, that's where we are right now, in terms of the death toll. Or we may be just a bit to the right, just past that inflection point. What you seem to be proposing is that the efforts taken to this point weren't worthwhile, because once we reached this point, we could now take all the measures that are helping us bend the curve. Or alternatively you seem to believe that people would have taken sufficient steps on their own to match the official policies, and those would have been good enough to get us here. If that's what you mean, I don't think it's true. Had we taken the social distancing steps we did take just *one week earlier*, we probably could have cut the death toll by half. And that obviously didn't happen, whether officially or not. What are those 30,000 American lives worth? We probably ought to decide, because it needs to be a factor in how and when we reopen (and thus ultimately how 2021 plays out for DCI).

  38. Premier HTS 484's. Oh look!! I happen to have one of their snares!! My brother was going to school at Valpo that year and I went to Bloomington for a college visit. I specifically wanted to march Star. I made some connections up there and managed to buy one of the snares in '94. I recovered it and put one of the newer premier stickers on it probably 15 or so years ago.

  39. So, I can virtually name those guys you were speaking with in 1990. Eric G was the DM. Jimmy C was the contra section leader, and those two "Old School" baris were most likely the Dorchester/Milton boys...Chris H and Matt R. For the record, Jimmy C is now the President of the Inspire BOD and Chris H is none other than Christopher Holland, Exec Director of the Boston Crusaders. Hmm.....interesting...no?

  40. 1989 was one of my favorite seasons. I was teaching and on the road with BAC that summer. I think they came in 17th...not bad for only 40 horns! And, if my memory serves me (it WAS over 30 years ago after all), I have the distinct recollection that Boston was on late at night in semis, wedged right between PR and BD. I know this sounds preposterous, but I am 99% sure that's when we went on. Anyway, the corps was very tight and extremely clean that summer, with a very visceral vintage Boston show. It was a pleasure to teach them!

  41. I get my subscription via Friends, so Flo doesn't know me. I did use them but they're not on my mind now. Instead of their subscription, I suggest you pay that money directly to a drum corps and get a tax write off! Woo! (Or, maybe I have Flo emails going to my junk inbox. No clue, and won't be watching.)
