  3. Well on the spiritual side of things. Church our family went to closed 2 years back and sis (has hard to find book business) helped the closing by clearing out the small library. While doing that she was asked to take the left over hymnals with her too. Then found out the few dozen hymnals that was expected was actually around 200. Someone forgot to check the pew racks. 😫 Anyway hymnals didn’t sell too quick until coronavirus and stay at home kicked in. Now selling a few a week which beats few a year. All we can figure is people are attending church on line and want a hymnal to follow along. And while getting a mail out ready she found a hymnal that some relatives paid for with a donation. They’re no longer with us but contacted their daughter and sending it there.

  4. And 99% do not trust polls. Polls are easily manipulated. Word the question a little differently, or ask it at a slightly different time, and the results can change quite a bit. But why stop there? When a third party changes the wording after the fact, that distorts things even further. This is a great example. 86) Imagine my surprise when I went to the source (the real source, ipsos.com, April 24th), and found this was the full description of the 86% finding (underlining by me): "Almost all Americans (86%) support social distancing policies saying ‘social distancing and stay-at-home orders are responsible government policies that are saving lives’." This version removed all reference to social distancing, and added the reference to "over-reaction" as their own spin. Fake news. 85) Another lie of omission. Going to the source (npr.org), the poll they took April 21-26 actually asked (emphasis mine) "Do you think it’s a good idea or a bad idea to do each of the following without further testing for the coronavirus?". Under that insanely moot hypothetical, 85% voted it a bad idea. 91) Same poll, same wording, same omission of said wording... same fraud. 85) The Ipsos poll finding 85% are "confident in the ability of their local public health officials" comes from a May 2003 survey in Canada concerning the SARS outbreak. What does that have to do with "how Americans feel about COVID-19"? Fake news on two counts. 93) Ipsos has been polling weekly for the past month, "When leaving your home, are you maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from other people?". The answer is multiple choice. Not once have more than 2% chosen "never". The other 98%, therefore, are trying to maintain distance. 81) From Politico.com in their words as posted April 15th (emphasis by me): "More than eight in 10 voters, 81 percent, say Americans “should continue to social distance for as long as is needed to curb the spread of coronavirus, even if it means continued damage to the economy.”" Note how "curb the spread of coronavirus" was altered to "stop the coronavirus". I respectfully ask that you stop posting misleading statistics, polls, or other "data" from dubious sources. That is not what this forum is here for.

  5. I wonder how many thousands of undiagnosed cancer cases have occurred since the Covid quarantine started. My point? The idea was to flatten the curve and not overwhelm hospitals. Good job has been done in both areas. Zero Covid deaths at the expense of cancer deaths, diabetes deaths, suicides, etc. is not logical at all. A balance is needed. I’m glad to see some reopening occurring. I hope a spike in Covid doesn’t occur. Doctors shouldn’t be getting laid off during a pandemic. I hope to see an opening up of so-called non-essential procedures. I personally know of a friend who fell and thinks they cracked ribs but are afraid to go to the doctor. Here’s hoping we can move forward beyond this.

Only 14 corps in 48 Seasons!! Here's your chance to hash it out. Are there any corps you feel should be on this list who got the shaft? Or shafted themselves?? If finalist positions were changed to match your opinions, what would the medal counts look like? Which scoring system did you prefer? Any other thoughts? Let's hear it...

  10. No one is happy about our shared situation. But I do not think we are witnessing an overreaction to our predicament. I am more concerned that people aren’t taking this pandemic seriously enough. Please feel free to disagree. But this thread is supposed to be about encouragement, and every few days it digresses to political talking points. I, for one, am tired of this cycle. I again urge the mods to close it down.

  13. Medals!? We didn't get no stink'in medals. WTH! No beef with any of the placements except to say I believe we would have placed higher than 3rd in 1974 had our corps been larger. So odd to see 2-7 finished in the top three only once during the DCI era. Best corps to have never won DCI. I liked the Tic system way better. Kept the Broadway people in check.

  17. what this says is....consistency. BD since 75 has been a machine. SCV has had periods where they were middle of the pack that keep them down lower. Cavies and cadets didn't truly become players til the 80's, giving BD and SCV a 10+ year head start

  19. Lol well I was kinda busy... 1990-1992 got married, got a (fixer upper) house and was asked to be in council for my church which was hitting some rough times. Something had to give after 1992..... And after doing and following corps since 1974 I was kind of burned out.... 2003 saw there was an exhibition show at Gettysburg which is near me. Cadets, Crossmen and local Alumni type corps. Went to it and found I was still interested and ended up doing the Alumni thing for 8 years.

  21. Phantom should have won outright in 1996. SCV should have won outright in 1999. Cadets should have won outright in 2000. 1993 is the only year I look at and think, yeah, that probably should have been a tie.

  22. Full agreement on all of these points. However the list I could make of changes to the Top 3 would be it's own thread, so I will exhibit some rare self-control and (mostly) only focus on corps 4th and below that should have gotten medals. 1994 Cavaliers, bronze - Here's a weird one: Phantom was better visually but Cavaliers were better musically. I love Phantom's super-original show (the only DCI show ever to not have any color) but the Cavies had a great show too, and got hosed by the effect judges. 1995 Blue Devils, gold - I know what I just said, but this is still the most egregious screw job I've seen in DCI 1995 Madison Scouts, bronze - Should have taken Musical Effect by at least half a point over every other corps that year. Apologies if any of them are reading this, but 1995 Finals judges: you were on crack. 1999 Cadets, bronze - they were flat out better than the Cavaliers in every area except percussion performance. 2007 Phantom Regiment, bronze - The exact reverse of 1994. As sloppy as Phantom was visually, they were that much better musically than the Cavaliers. Cavaliers should have been 7th musically at Finals. But, it's DCI. Visual accomplishment is always credited better than Musical accomplishment. 2015 Cadets, bronze - Yeah, I know, I'm a Shostakovich homer. Maybe I'm being sentimental because this was the last great Cadets show. 2016 Carolina Crown, gold - *whispers* Relentless was the best show of 2016, sorry not sorry 2019 Carolina Crown, bronze - come on, now. Doesn't music matter AT ALL any more? 5th highest music score OF THE DECADE (and arguably should have been higher).

  24. I guess I'll start. 1975 Muchachos were sitting 2nd heading into Finals .... disqualified for marching overage members. Suncoast Sound and Spirit of Atlanta were definitely good enough to medal in the mid 80's. BK and Glassmen were very close in 1999 until Cavies and Scouts surged on Finals night. SCV probably should have shared Gold in 87 and 88 .... and maybe 89. Giving PR their first win in 89. SCV probably should have won outright in 99. Same for PR in 96. (funny how I find clear winners on years with TIES and the opposite on years with close battles) The smaller judging panel and weird scoring system that started in 1988 is probably the worst of all systems.

  30. Germany has had 7,661 Covid-19 deaths. Germany's population is 83 million. That works out to 91 deaths per million. That article quotes someone who says Germany should have followed Sweden's model. Sweden has had 3,256 Covid-19 deaths. Sweden's population is 10 million. That works out to 322 deaths per million. Ohio, where I live, has more than 11 million people. We've had 1,271 deaths here. In other words, my state is doing nearly three times better than Sweden. Go Bucks! (But not quite as well as Germany.)

  37. "Join us on May 16th for a day of fundraising and celebrating everything that makes the Boston Crusaders great. While we may not be “moving in” at Castleton this weekend, Crusader Nation will join together over a series of watch parties, exclusive content, and a live stream featuring special guests! Without a summer tour, we are asking our family, friends, alumni, and fans to rise up to ensure a successful return to the field in 2021. This year, Giving Day will replace our important annual campaign and help close our $500,000 gap in lost summer revenue. Most importantly though, this is a participation drive. With a goal of 300 donors, this isn’t about an amount, it is about participation. There is only ONE Boston Crusaders. Rise up and help us preserve this special organization." https://app.mobilecause.com/e/viG9vQ?hss_channel=fbp-146636528713632&utm_campaign=2020 Giving Day&utm_content=128559804&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&vid=7zike

  38. In many asian cultures wearing a mask is not about bad air, it's about not spreading illness. It is also accepted and not gawked at.
    1 point
  39. Definitely. It was a large oversight, many of our friends in the east (South Korea in particular) are used to using masks on a daily basis as it is the culture there. That in combination with a more robust testing system (and smaller population) has allowed SK to have some of the lowest Coronavirus #s of any developed country. Even without hard-nosed evidence from a clinical study, you can deduce that utilizing a mask or any sort of barrier would help reduce the spread of a virus that spreads via aerosols. Oh well, I am glad they changed their minds.

  41. I’m employed by no one but student debt at the current moment. However, COVID-19 has taken family away from me and a couple of my friends. So pipe down with your “don’t feel the pain” BS. These “draconian measures” (overdramatic much?) are in place by recommendation of infectious disease experts. If they were doing more harm than good, they would not be in place.

  42. Maybe for soldiers globally. But the lack of personal automobiles, good roads, proliferation of air travel, high speed rail and cruise ship industry, would limit the global travel we see today. So for the everyday person and businesses in general, there WAS NOT a lot of travel.

  43. PA 21,655 cases... Philadelphia 6022 (worst in the state). Weird part is Philly was named as one of the future hot spots???? Article I read was bus driver told guy to leave and he refused. Cops told him to leave and he refused. He was violating the bus companies (SEPTA) policy. Vid shows him struggling with cops as they literally carry him out. Sure PA will be known as the Police State but I only see a future Darwin Award winner. Apply to topic: what if DCI try’s to have a tour and some places still have mask, no outsiders or other mandates in place

  45. Life won't be back to normal until 2022. That doesn't mean it will be the way it is now for two years, but until there's a vaccine --fall 2021 at the earliest, by most estimates-- it will not be safe to gather in large groups. However, it can be made much safer than it is with robust regular testing and quick containment efforts. That means probably 1 million Americans being tested every day. (We're currently doing about 10% of that.) Not just people who are sick, but random people everywhere. And you get your temperature taken every time you try to enter a building, and if it shows you have a fever, you don't go in (unless it's your home). And if you test positive, your state government isolates you in a quarantine facility until you test negative (treating you if you develop symptoms), and anyone you've had contact with in the past two weeks gets put in a hotel room until two weeks have passed since they interacted with you. The epidemiologists probably do the contact tracing via some sort of app on your phone that gives them a good record of every other phone (and its owner) you've been close to. It's going to be weird and seriously intrusive. But it's the only possible alternative to staying locked down until there's a vaccine. If these steps don't happen, we get New York levels of infection all over again, but in lots of places. (Read about what's going to be necessary here: Getting Down to Planning the Next Year and the Interim New Normal.) A minor quirk: you'll be expected to wear a mask every time you're in a crowded place. (Also handshaking likely is going to become a thing of the past.) And every time there's a flare-up in a community, that area goes back into lock-down mode for a few weeks. But hopefully the steps above keep that to a minimum. One other thing that would help: antiviral and therapeutic drugs. Even with all that happening, probably 20% of the population is going to be nervous and will stay home as much as possible. Plus obviously this means the economy continues to be shaky. One positive from this: the number of people contracting all infectious diseases, including colds and flus, will drop. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - So assuming we can vastly increase our testing capacity and put the other necessary procedures in place: --People aren't going to have as much money to spend on entertainment. And a number of them won't want to be in crowds. This will apply to members, too (the specific subject you're inquiring about). --Some event locations might suddenly be under shelter-in-place orders in the middle of DCI's tour, meaning shows are cancelled. Imagine if it happens in Indianapolis in August. --An entire corps might suddenly be quarantined for two weeks when one of their members falls ill. For these and other reasons, it's likely some corps will fold.

  46. It was a political post in a place where I was lead to believe politics are disallowed. Only for certain opinions I suppose. What is most depressing is that this site DCP along with DCI - many or most corps ,,,, will not be allowed to march this year and next if you take what some states are keeping in place. Some here will keep on cheering for a complete shut down, or even a limited shut down. All the while the activity will die with this overreaction. probably in that poll there is one that supports no school next fall, that will do drum corps and marching bands 0 favors. The traffic on this site is basically fans of the marching arts, the activity is in danger and We see folks post polls.
