  1. Those kids in the high school band gotta have some serious chops to play Pomp And Circumstance for 6 hours straight.

  2. Sad thing is the biggest victory for corps still around in 2021 will be that they survived. Having been in a corps that twice came back from not fielding to competing again that IS something to be proud of

  3. This would be an incredibly fast way to kill drum corps.

  4. BK was having a drill camp at the University of Wyoming Field House. Several of us at UW were drum corps people (Troopers, PR, SCV, Scouts, Railmen) in that era, so we went over to check it out. Some BK staffer was talking to us while they were learning drill, and my friend asked "I heard ZINGALI is writing their drill. Has he been here?" The guy said something like "Yes, ZINGALI is here." And that's how we met George Zingali.

  5. doubtful on Oregon. the Mike Stevens story came out and kids had already decided not to go back based on their summer in 18. Fred again got booted because of a newspaper article, not internet screaming. if so when the Moody story broke here several years before something would have been done. Cadets administrative staff changes had everything to do with DCI saying "do this or no tour"

  6. Wasn’t this kinda how things were before DCI and the pageantry leeches dismantled it all?

  7. 7 STEPS TO DRUM CORPS RESTART When it's time ... 1. Fold DCI and DCA, form one new national organization that represents everybody, senior and junior corps. 2. The mission statement is to facilitate the formation of as many new corps as possible. 3. Make electronics illegal, to make it cheaper and easier to start new corps. Reduce show length to 9 minutes with a mandatory concert number to make it easier for new corps to compete immediately 4. Divide the country into 8 regions. No corps competes outside their region until finals week. The goal is to get more corps on the field, by making it cheaper and easier for everyone to get into the game. 5. Reduce all corps appearance fees, and all corps membership dues -- focus on creating as many local/regional drum corps shows as possible, and incentives for local sponsors to hold a show. 6. Every show will have senior and junior corps competing, with full retreat at the end for the fans. 7. Start a circuit of judged winter concerts (on stage, no drill), so the competitive experience of the activity is not so focused only on the summer. The above is all possibly silly nonsense, and maybe even irrelevant given the state of the covid-19 crisis. But, if I had a vote, the activity would focus on growth, not art or music technology, for the next few years.

  8. online outcry is from people making a ruckus online. we had been #####ing on here and Reddit about Morrison for a long time before that change made. i read most of the articles in the actual newspaper. and not one thing changed because of any outcry from fans or members online. DCI has only once made a change based off of online behavior, and that was recaps. the G&? they were already fighting back internally before it got out here. all of the publishing of safety regs had little to do with online discussions and more from fear of legal action and loss of sponsors. i appreciate your attempt to parse participles in a Brasso/Garfield way, but well, you came up short.

  10. My nephew is graduating from high school today. The school is streaming the event on Youtube. What they've done is assign kids into groups of five, each of whom is assigned to a ten-minute wnidow during the day, starting at 8 this morning and going for another couple hours yet. In each window, at two-minute intervals, each senior walks across a stage to get his or her diploma from his parents, who are the only other people on stage besides the principal announcing the names from the lectern.

  11. In 1974 defending champ SCV elected not to go on last, allowing Madison (who won prelims) to go on last (no one wanted to go on after Madison). Strategy worked.

  12. Don't get me going....missing 83 BD's one-handed snare accel in Paradox and 84 Garfield's company front were bad enough. Not correcting those shot selections when they were remastered for the DVDs is a travesty. And would it have KILLED DCI to let the applause run a bit on those DVDs?? Show ends, we get 2 seconds of crowd reaction and that's it??

  16. i said this in a place it appeared on Facebook and i'll say it here. theres plusses and minuses to each of the ideas, but it's a good conversation starter. there have been conversations at the highest levels of the activity about the future and what if's, that i know. no answers or solutions yet, as we have to see how the world continue to change. however, while good to disucss, there's two universal truths that continue to be ignored: outside of posting recaps, no outcry online has ever changed the minds of the powers that be. despite the unfounded claims, electronics is not a huge cost driver. the hands down biggest costs for a drum corps tour are food, feul, housing and insurance. now taking spring training from 4-6 weeks to 2-3 weeks.....thousands saved on food, housing and probably some insurance right there.

  17. Boy do we see lots of that today. In fact some of it is on TV right this minute...lol sifting through the levity I can actually relate to knowing many who have gone through the activity that fits into your clever wording

  18. Definition of Pageantry Leeches: Has affiliation with one or more verticals within the marching performing arts activity. A non-vested employee who has not achieved or completed the required years of creditable study and participation in order to earn the right to be called an educator. . a.k.a. Clueless Demonstrates a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for marching members, an excessive need for admiration, and honestly greedy. . a.k.a. Narcissist Known to speak jargon, that is perceived as fashionable at the particular time or in a particular context that is incoherent and incomprehensible to those pretending to understand during rehearsal. . a.k.a. Babbling idiot Holding idiosyncratic beliefs of entitlement to receive payment for times spent on-a-mobile phone, traveling or commuting while on tour, sleeping and daydreaming. . a.k.a. Delusional

  24. Most favorite: 2016 Relentless - I think this show was way underrated. The ending change was costly 2015 - Inferno - should’ve been Gold 2013- E=MC2 2011 - Rachstar I just like it 2014 OOTW - probably their hardest show ever on all fronts .. it struggled to execute 🤡

  25. Favorites (warning - controversy): 2019 - Beneath the Surface. MAN that brass book! The show was captivating from start to finish, I loved the use of bulgarian music and Caroline Shaw, and they had probably the best ballad of all of 2019. The overall idea of the show was executed super well and the visual side of things was amazing, not to mention they had one of the best percussion lines in their history. Severely underrated show in a year of such competition. 2012 - For the Common Good. This was the first show I ever saw when I heard of DCI. While I never saw a live show until 2016, this was the first show I watched online. The writing was spectacular and I think it's one of the best uses of source music in drum corps history. Mixing Moren's "Dreams" with Fanfare for the Common Man was a great mix. The visual aspect was stunning, with seeming impossible-to-march drill in the opener and the closer's rotating cube and surprise Crown set. Stunning show. 2006 - In.trance.it. This show was (arguably) the one that really set Crown on a path to being the crowd-pleasing organization they're known for today. Visually, this show had one of the best uses of field space and not having props helps with that. There are so many different colors and textures by the brass, from enticing to funky to lyrical to powerful, and everything in between. For an 8th place show, this has got to be one of the best shows Crown has put out. 2010 - A Sec2nd Chance. I've heard there was controversy behind this show that the original idea got leaked and they had to scrap that and write a new show. Regardless, this show had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Mahler 2 has a special place in my heart and they execute it so well. The Danzon and Nimrod were amazing written and performed, there were a lot of nice visual effects by the members and the guard, and I loved the callback to 2009 where the couple finally gets to be together and they run off the field. 2008 - Finis. To summarize this show up in one word, it would be classic. I swear, the designers probably just went to the Top 100 list for classical music and picked every iconic piece out there, but man do they know how to write. I love the fact that I can come back to the show and hear something different every time because they wrote so many easter eggs in the book. If it wasn't Phantom's year, this one would have definitely taken it (and I believe it should have placed higher than 4th). Honorable Mentions: 2004 - Bohemia. To be honest, I am one of those people that doesn't mind singing in drum corps when used effectively. The Seasons of Love was extremely lovely to hear and I think for a 2004 show, it was pretty ahead of its time. 2017 - It Is. That brass had to be one of the best books every written in the history of drum corps. I think that if the designers were to really hone in on the idea and if the guard was better, it would have won. The singing was a nice touch as well. Least Favorite: 2018 - Beast. The idea just never caught on with me. I feel like the show itself didn't really flow and overall it was just really flat and boring. The brass was stunning and the percussion was the best it had been up to that point but the overall show design just wasn't it for me. 2011 - Rach Star. Similar to Beast, this idea just never caught my eye. I like the concept of mixing popular rock songs with classical pieces but it just doesn't click with me. Brass is great as always but I personally feel like they've put out better shows. Don't judge me too harshly. I've loved Crown since I heard of drum corps and I always will. Even while I'm currently contracted at Phantom Regiment, my hometown love will never change.

  26. Bridging the generations and the distance, members of two pivotal years of the Boston Crusaders had the unique opportunity to connect over the weekend. On Saturday night, the 80th Anniversary corps consisting of our current 2020 members, and the 50th Anniversary Corps (alumni from the 1990 corps) met over Zoom for a unique history night. With notable alumni......... and many more in attendance, both corps enjoyed an evening of storytelling, nostalgia, and celebration of all things BAC. As the 1990 alumni traded stories of old rivalries, nicknames, and memorable moments on the road, the 2020 members enjoyed learning and interacting with the corps who preceded them. The 2020 members enjoyed hearing from alumni that went on to successful careers in a variety of fields including professional musicians, engineers, medical professionals, and current BAC staff and board members. Impressive attendance, participation and excitement from the 1990 corps, now 30 years removed from the anniversary season, is a testament to the bond that was formed. Even though the 2020 corps will not convene for a traditional history night at Most Precious Blood this summer, we were able to bridge two notable generations and provide a connection that otherwise would not have been possible. https://bostoncrusaders.org/2020/04/bridging-the-generations-and-the-distance/

  27. And most things were a hot mess with corps not having much to say about their own pathways. As far as the pageantry leeches, Who exactly do you mean ? Seems that they were the revered icons which were the ones who decided the pathway to exactly what you see today, the direction that was talked about way back then and how so many things including how people needed to think for the survival of the activity?
