  1. BD's worst meal in 84 was beef stroganoff. Not many of us ate it...so after the Pt. Huron rainout show, when we were stuck at the Canadian border with Garfield, Freelancers, and 27th, we gave it to Garfield....and we sat on our busses in slack-jawed amazement watching them pound it down like there was no tomorrow. Even today, alums of 84 Cadets tell me that was their BEST meal all year!

  8. It takes understanding on both sides. Avoiding assumptions and generalizations, not ascribing motivations, withholding judgements, avoiding over-simplifications and broad-brushes. Treating people as individuals rather than stereotypes. Unlike running around shouting platitudes and attacking everyone who fails to check the box we think they should, it takes humility, compassion, and work.

  11. BLACK. LIVES. MATTER. In this episode, we discuss what the DCI experience has been like, both as a marching member and a staff member, while being black. We must be willing to address these issues, so that we can improve not only our organization, but DCI as a whole. We have work to do. Episode […] View the full article

  12. As an alumni just got an invite for a zoom feed with the intern head of security at my old college. Back in my day it was pretty much white with few foreign students in the mix. Today lot more overseas students and has really outreached toward minority students. Town and county still low in minorities and conservative so comfort level not too good there. Since the last few months appears college heads realized they need to open the communications to students a LOT wider due to CV and white/minority/police problems. (Not going to say BLM because of “definition” issues but same idea). Some might say small steps but steps none the less. edit (what I forgot): BITD state colleges hid any bad news including racial issues. Now mine publicizes it with a statement that basically says “we don’t put up with this ####”. That includes racist fb statements with photos taken on school property. (Can’t say example I am thinking)

  14. The crime bill had some pretty bad consequences, but it's worth remembering that it had broad support, including a significant amount of support from African Americans. A lot of people don't realize how much crime rates have dropped since 1994. There's a growing consensus now that the actual reason for that is the removal of lead from paint and gasoline--and that the rate was already starting to fall then. But nobody knew it at the time. - - - - - - - - - - - - As for criticism apparently directed my way in one or both of the two posts just above, if the administrators decide that we should no longer discuss the issues to which the various corps have addressed with their statements on equity, diversity and inclusion, that would be fine by me -- not that it matters whether I object or not. But it was a DCP moderator who introduced the subject of pro-BLM blacklisting into this topic, for instance, and I think the conversation has flowed pretty naturally from there. if the moderators say that any further replies in this thread must stick solely to acknowledging the corps' statements, so be it.

  15. You are correct, of course (though most of the problems the government tries to fix are in fact caused by it in the first place). Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of minorities have been sent into the US prison system on the back of the 1994 crime bill. Instead of eliminating the person responsible from political leadership, there is large effort to elevate him to the most powerful elected position in the world. How can a party claim to care about minority issues and then offer up this person as their best hope for a better tomorrow? It is shameful, really.

  22. June 15, 2002, 9:34pm ET - Tour Day 23 Gettysburg, PA → Boston, MA We had our first performance of our 2002 field show tonight in Gettysburg. Most of our rehearsal time during the past two days included rain, but we worked through it as best we could. For tonight’s show we marched right up to the fast tempo ending in “Strawberry Soup” where we stood still to finish. The show went pretty well for our first performance. There were plenty of problems with tempo and Aussies falling off people’s heads, but all in all I’d say it was a success. Our show generates excitement, which will make it a fun summer for us. I found it really interesting rehearsing so close to the main battlefield of Gettysburg. Even the area we practiced in had monuments and markers to brigades and fallen soldiers. I wish we had a little more time here to explore some of the historical sites, but I guess our focus this summer is drum corps, not history anyway. We have a little more than a week before our first judged show. (Next post is June 18.)

  23. It's probably too soon to say that: the spikes (so far mostly in southern and western states) started in late May. Also, I can't find it now, but earlier today I saw a report that indicated 1-2% of protesters were testing positive. It may be that outdoor activity where most people are wearing masks is not too dangerous. Fingers crossed. That would be something DCI would like to know sooner rather than later, so they can plan for next year. (Suppose it turns out to be true. Would that mean that DCI, to keep people safe, would have a moral responsibility to do Finals outdoors in 2021?)

  26. Beyond Hawthorne's absence, I was disappointed that Archie, Baltimore, I-men and Hurricane's were absent ... but ... Make no mistake ... It was a GREAT two days of drum corps at its finest ...

  27. I marched that first W.O. also, in my first Sunrisers season. There were extraordinary corps in both divisions: Garfield, St. Kevin's, Sac, Chicago Royal Airs, Boston, Bronx Kingsmen, St. Raphael's, Pittsfield Cavaliers, Bridgeport PAL, Sky, Carver, Bucs, Syracuse, Sunrisers, Marksmen, Amboy Dukes, Pittsburgh Rockets...etc. Hawthorne was still hung over from their win at Legion Nationals so they passed. Not many cared, actually. That show at Roosevelt Stadium was a drum corps candy store, at the height of the golden age, on your birthday, with a cherry on top.

  28. I assure you Mr. Dan Cathy has received the message regarding what people think of his views loud and clear via various sources. So much so that he has issued statements regarding it numerous times. An ignored email will do nothing. I have written to owners of large corporations in the past (not Chick Fil A) with no reply. I understand views such as these are difficult to change, not everyone can have an epiphany moment like Drew Brees did just a few weeks ago. So the alternative option that I am hoping for is an eventual resignation. Until then, I will do what I feel is right, which is to make sure my family does not contribute a single dollar to that man's wealth. I am curious as to why people are so concerned about a simple boycott.

  29. I’m not trying to change anyone’s heart or mind as I know that is impossible. The ONLY thing I am doing is making sure my money doesn’t go to someone whose views make me want to vomit. If you think anything else with my posts on this you are reading way too deeply

  30. Know you asked cappy but since I don’t go there either I will respond too. I don’t know if stopping donations to anti gay organizations is a change of heart or trying to put a better “face” to the company (CYA). As far as others boycotting that is their business and not mine. I never asked for a “change” in the company. I see it as not putting money in the pocket of someone who is against my friends. If and when someone reports that the owner has had a change of heart I will reconsider. Its not a business level thing with me it’s human being level. If you speak out against my friends you don't get my #### money.... period

  31. Two reasons: 1. Because the company is still run by someone with openly bigoted views 2. After facing conservative Christian backlash from their initial decision, they backpedaled shortly after and said that just because they stopped donating to two anti-LGBTQ charities now does not mean that they will not do so in the future.

  32. Same here. Yesterday was my sister’s high school graduation celebration (along with a couple other graduates in our neighborhood). I was able to convince the person organizing the catering to not get food catered from Chick Fil A which was originally their first choice. It may just be a drop in the bucket but it makes me feel good to do my part.

  33. Pretty much what I got told by some when I refused to go to ChicFilA. How could I not go when the company gives so much to charity etc etc. I still stand by my friends and don’t go.

  34. I wondered what happened as had a response. Just going to bring up personal feelings can also affect which businesses we patronize or refuse to go to. For me I refuse to spend a penny at ChicFilA because of owners gay opinions. He’s allowed to say what he wants and I’m allowed to make sure he doesn’t get any of my money. My feelings do not come from a high level. I just refuse to patronize the place of someone who doesn’t like my friends. Especially in PA where we have gay marriage but can get fired as that is not a protected group. And one of my friends is still in the closet to the outside world because of that

Having looked through my PM history, I have sent you one message over PM and it was regarding the ineffectiveness of hydroxychloroquine with a link to a research publication. I’d be happy to screenshot the message to the mods and have them assess how “threatening” it is.

  38. English, circa 2009: "Marcos Zapata was a thief Who once did steal, and roam the street Until a heist of his went bad He was shot (bang bang bang) and left for dead. Before his last breaths of life The witch saved him from the death of night And so arose Relampago! (thunderclap) To fight away the evil foe. And so begins our hero's story Of life, of death, and return to glory."

  41. If DCX is correct, then only one of Noël Coward's many songs ("London Pride") has ever been played by a drum corps (and only once, by a British corps in 1988). The song of his that I know best is "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" (1931), performed on this 1932 recording by Coward himself: Coward was amused to hear that Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchil got into an argument about the lyrics following the signing of the Atlantic Charter in 1941. Here's another recording of Coward, seen performing it live as a patter song in 1955: Mad Dogs & Englishmen is also the name of a well-known Joe Cocker album, and I see that there are also songs titled "Mad Dog" by by both America and Deep Purple, but I've never heard either.

  43. Arizona has had a huge spike in cases the last week. It will be interesting to see what happens with the number of deaths. The two curves have not correlated so far in an especially discernible way. Neither have the testing curve and the cases curve. There was a huge increase in testing availability in May, and then people started coming out a month ago but gradually and then we had curfews unto a week ago, so maybe the increase is the combination of new opportunities for exposure combined with ready availability of testing shot the numbers up. Also we are now into the heat here. Consistently in the 100s, recently 109. Hard to know how that affects things. My wife is high risk so went on unpaid leave today until September.
