  5. I have a great deal of concern over the fiscal survival of corps as the world faces this pandemic. Whereas I have seen some creative fundraising, and great efforts on the part of alumni, my concerns remain, and I am a bit alarmed that I do not see any (at least advertised) "game plans" regarding this. First off, everyone is expecting a 2021 season. If all goes perfect....(1) an effective vaccine for the virus is available to all by the end of the first quarter or early 2nd quarter of 2021, or (2) highly successful treatments for anyone infected are developed that stop the virus cold, or (3) somehow the disease dies down on it's own.....then, we will very most likely see a season. I am cautiously optimistic, as there has never been a bigger worldwide effort toward a vaccine. However, there is a real chance that we may not be out of the woods by next Spring. I think that all of the member corps need to consider (1) The current model......2 million dollar plus budgets, $4000+ membership fees, huge staffs, huge travel schedules.....all of these have made corps survival a challenge, even in fairly good economic times. Even if everything falls perfectly into place.....a vaccine, a return of most jobs, schools back to normal, etc......a strong return will not happen overnight, and the country could remain in economic depression or at the least, severe recession.....for quite some time. My purpose here is to not simply state "doom and gloom", but propose a model that I think could work and possibly insure the future of the corps. I know that some will find my suggestions a bit "radical", but I think in light of what we face, it may require that. (1) Corps should aim to reduce their average budget from 2 million dollars to around 800k. If they gun for that and it's a million, and they can come up with that, so be it, but I would go for a 60% reduction. Here is how I think it could happen. (1) shorten the season. July 1st until August 7th championship. (2) Corps would compete regionally (East, Midwest, West, South) until July 22nd. On July 22nd, tours would slowly start moving and groups crossing out of region, through August 3rd. There are no "full regionals" with everybody there. None. There is a high possibility that some competitors might not go head to head until nationals. There WILL be some of the traditional big shows......DCI East, DCI Midwest....for example..........but not everyone will be there. (3) I do think that fuel prices will remain lower than what they were due to the depression, and DCI might capitalize on a fuel consortium to save even more, like they have done in the past (4) reduce "paid" staff significantly......recent "apprentice age outs" could perhaps fill some void by being hired by just doing some things to not cost them money, but not pay them......food while with the corps, same housing, transportation, and help with getting them in and out. A typical staff would be reduced to......Brass arranger, two additional brass instructors.....Percussion arranger, two additional percussion instructors.......visual designer, two marching instructors, one guard instructor. This is 10 people, and 10-15 could be the norm......I just called up a staff of a finalist to get an idea, and they have 69 people listed. I won a title being part of a 16 person staff. (5) Have a "national move-in day set at 6/15...not unlike rehearsal restrictions that sports teams have....it will establish an equal playing field, and also help all to save money. (6) Encourage (but not force) corps to consider doing drills that do not have "8 million sets", so that the corps can achieve a decent performance level in a shorter time span, focus on moving and playing WELL, and insuring a solid product right out of the gate. (7) Props, especially expensive ones, should be highly discouraged.....rely on performance, not "glitz".......one corps last year was in serious financial trouble, yet they spent over 60K in props (and they didn't help their performance......). (8) consider a return to uniforms that can be worn and maintained for multiple years, (at least for the musicians), instead of the yearly new "costumes" that are being used currently with mixed audience reaction (9) encourage maintenance of current brass, percussion, and electronics.....for 3-5 years.....instead of new equipment each year or 2.........(10) explore the idea of all of the DCI corps to consider the use of the same insurance company, (and allow bids), if that company can reduce the insurance costs for all of the corps in return for getting all of the corps' business. (11) Reduce the prices for premium (40-40) seats modestly, and the price for outside of the 40"s significantly.....keeping them at "non-recession" prices wiould actually create less income as struggling fans are priced out Not any one thing is going to cut the budget all the way down, but the combination of all, with a frugal approach, can make it possible. You would still have 33 possible days of regular season shows, and 36 counting championship rounds.....Even if a corps took one day per week off, they could still easily get in 30 contests, which is actually more than many are doing now. Corps should also consider that family fiscal situations of members could see dire change in the next year. Corps should consider lowering costs to 2 K per member, and many have also already credited part of what was already paid for 2020 to 2021. They should also consider doing the typical things that the band and indoor world are already doing by creating more individual fund raising opportunities for members. It's more work for all, but far more "inclusive", providing a means for those who are really struggling to come up with the funds other than just the sponsorships and "fund me" pleas that are the norm for today. I am sure that some will say that the suggestions are extreme, but I honestly think that some administrations are going to be living in a "dream world" if they expect "business as usual" to happen in drum corps at a time of national depression. I believe that being pro-active, and starting the planning now, will allow the activity to not only survive, but thrive......especially after things start to gradually head toward "normal" again.....hopefully.........

  12. The Wife just started cooking with PC and when the tour headed east she finally found her favorite breakfast food at a local grocery -- grits. She cooked up a "mess of 'em" (as we say) and had them out for breakfast. Yes -- lots of puzzled looks from the California folks, but there were some brave souls who tried them and got hooked. The staff, too.

  13. The most famous early vaccination work is Edward Jenner's smallpox innoculation in 1796, which used the related but less dangerous cowpox virus. According to the Wikipedia entry on vaccinations, there was some "controversy within the medical profession and religious opposition to the use of animal material". So there has been opposition to vaccines about as long as there have been vaccines. Globally one challenge has been that sometimes governments have co-opted vaccination efforts in third world societies as a way of secretly advancing some other goal, which, if people learn about it, makes them suspicious of medical researchers. (The linked article specifically concerns polio vaccinations in Pakistan in the past decade.)

  19. I have to remind you ( I've said this for a very long time ) If you want what you say, the easiest way to do it and could have done, it is run to OC shows, stay or get to the shows to see smaller corps, people need to put their money up instead of opinion. MONEY TALKS. WGI High School and independent A class is where the bread and butter money is and WGI finally figured out don't bite the hand that feeds you. Unfortunately in DCI Goliath will always control because David doesn't bring it to the table in way of $$$$$ and people support. This is fact , not debatable. People have to admit it and if serious do something about it with total support. This will bring change or at least bring everyone to the same table. Action speaks much louder than words....JMO

  20. I plan to. It is a BIG reason why I dropped my old life (not going to get into the details... but I am happy that I did it) and moved to my college town. I am still waiting on the university to tell me what is going on for the small semester, but I am VERY optimistic. I hope to be an instructor for the best corps in the country soon. The summer just isn't the same without DCI.

Frankly, I was also looking forward to FINALLY traveling to Mesquite, Texas for The Cavaliers home away from home show. Maybe next season... 🙂

  22. Hello everyone. I’m still here in the Chicago suburbs and being very careful, mask, hand sanitizer, washing my hands raw. Cases here in Illinois are testing at 3%. I go out to stores now fully masked and I feel comfortable enough to have dinner on a patio once a week and a couple of beers at the outdoor areas at breweries. Jim and I are fine and haven’t killed each other yet. I hope there will be a safe and effective vaccine developed sometime in the next eighteen months. We are going to a cabin in the Smokies next month to enjoy nature safely. Besides that, I pray that everyone stays healthy and safe.

  23. But many want to support businesses that sell products and services they want to buy and don't bash them in the head with their political views. Or watch sports under the same circumstances. A free and fair market is not influenced by guilt or political dispositions. That's the reality I live and work in.
    1 point
  24. Well, that is odd. "Budgeting less money for your local police department and more for social services" and "defunding the police" are listed separately. So we have one person here contending that they are synonymous, vs. 1,000 poll subjects, a polling entity, and its associated media organization who think otherwise.

  25. I don’t think it is pointless to want people to understand each other when they discuss racial injustice or police brutality, such that we might at least have a chance at making the world a better place.

  26. The scrambled nonessential use of the term “defund” and here what it means is beyond the pale of reality. If you can’t say what you mean, perhaps find someone who is capable? Especially when they are calling to disband the police. I’m seeing a clear message and the inaccurate word play of “this is what it means” fails at every level.

  27. Sorry to reply to your post in reverse order, but that is how I roll. But my few minutes of research found that there are factions who seriously intend to dismantle entire police departments. One such idea was to eliminate the entire Minneapolis police department over the ensuing year, replacing them with some alternative service composed of people who actually reside in Minneapolis. Wait. The point is to create a lie to grab our attention? Then tell us what the real agenda is? After your "hydroxychloroquine BS" posts awhile back, I would never have expected you to defend anything less than absolute, factual accuracy in such public policy communications. Why should this be treated differently? The DCP demographic? What is that? In a thread devoted to combating racism, is it too much to ask for you to leave your -isms out of this conversation? Oh, okay. If reducing crime via other means could reduce the burden on police so as to permit their downsizing, in a package of changes that pay for themselves, that would be good. Unfortunately, reducing the burden on police is not possible at the moment when cities all across America are under attack. In fact, recent events might cause people to decide that they need a larger and more militarized police force to guard the residents, workers and visitors of cities from riots, looting and destruction of buildings.

  28. Reallocate is the term you are looking for. Making excuses for inaccurate verbiage is kinda of pointless and self defeating. Either words mean something or they don't. It's pretty easy, "Sorry, we meant reallocate resources not defund the police force." Not hard. Defund has been used many times to mean precisely what it means. So I don't buy into the scramble to save face by altering word meanings. The polarization is ONLY coming from people that utter it, not the people listening and understanding it. "But this is what I meant" and continue to use inaccurate terms...sorry not being sold that bill of goods.
    1 point
  29. Then quit using the inaccurate term "defund" and say reallocate. Defund has only one meaning. Either they are stupid and can't bother to pick up a dictionary, or have been caught exposing what they truly mean as they scramble to come up with nonsense.
    1 point
  30. Then what does it mean? Last I heard, "defund" means stop all funding. And when you cut off all funding to something that costs money to operate (like a drum corps, for example), it ceases to exist.

  31. A fundamental problem with practically every discussion of BLM is that people don't say what they mean by BLM. If someone says they support BLM, they could mean: (a) They support the belief that black lives matter (no capitalization). This is simply a statement without reference to anyone else's definition of an organization or movement. The life of a black person should not matter any less than the life of any other person. I doubt many people would disagree with this, and I think for a person or organization (such as a drum corps) to say otherwise would be concerning, to say the least. (b) They support the statements made on the "official" BLM website. This includes, among other things, "Defund the Police", which is a highly controversial notion that many people, including many black people, do not readily assume to be wise. Indeed, rational arguments have been made that it would do untold harm to the very people it professes to protect. To complicate matters, while some who appear to support the notion say they want to entirely abolish police departments, others, when pressed, say that it doesn't really mean what the words mean. (c) They support the black lives matter movement. This can't easily be interpreted because BLM is not really a centralized organization but a loosely connected movement with different organizations in different places. An organization in one place may have one set of beliefs, stated or organized, and an organization in another place may have a different set of beliefs, including those that contradict the beliefs of the other organization. So to say you support one organization might mean you oppose another. So if you are horrified by the murder of George Floyd, and believe that all black lives matter, including the life of David Dorn, but you cannot avoid coming to what seems to be a very rational conclusion that defunding the police would be a disaster that could cost countless lives including many black lives, and someone demands to know your official yes/no position on whether you support "black lives matter", what can you possibly say?

  32. you actually have no clue what really went down, what was done, and decisions made. so, allow me to skate close to the line of where mods shouldn't go. even before any decision were made or moderation began, because we did not cave to some folks ideas of what social justice should be i was sent messages by members of that page threatening me and my family and my home. why? because i and the team would not let them run hog wild on the FB page. and yes i reported those messages to facebook and some authorities after sluething on who the posters were. when decisions were made and actions begun, even more threats came and thru sluething we found a coordinated effort to hijack the page run by people tied to some organizations in drum corps. so we doubled down on the bad actors, and came up with the approach taken. so, while you feel suppressed, i felt attacked. would you like it if i sent you messages threatening to have your home torched? or to have your ### kicked? No i dont think you would like it. so if the DCP FB page and how its moderated...a group unpaid effort when we have time may I add...isn't to your cup of tea...then #### off.
