  1. I think about the times in our country’s history when the citizenry was called upon to make sacrifices and now shake my head when people freak out over wearing a mask at the grocery store.

  2. I think it is because everything related to COVID-19 has become politicized and it is darn near impossible to say anything about it that won’t be refuted by someone of the opposing viewpoint. In my case, I recognize that I am hypersensitive about the subject because of personal experience. All in all, it is a perfect storm for things to spiral out of control.

  4. Well Covid 19 does relate to drum-corp because there is no 2020 season. And 2021 season is locked into how we deal with Covid 19 so yes it's all connected...

  5. Yes I do shake my head as to why some people are against this. I don't like wearing a mask but this is how we cure this. It's frustrating.

  6. Since DCI isn't providing any new brass content, I guess nobody will mind a recent vid of Bugler's Holiday from the Boston Pops featuring Cavies brass arranger, Michael Martin.

  7. I have a complaint. I wear my mask properly everywhere but I’m #### tired of seeing people wearing masks under their nose. I saw several people just today. If my old ### can wear this mask properly, your twenty-something ### can, too.

  12. OK - If we were to design a Covid-19 themed show, what would it look like? Alice Cooper's 'Schools Out' is one possibility; the Sound of Silence (w/r/t Drum Corps) is another. And here is a link to the top 10 rock songs about sickness: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/sick-songs/

  13. The way I read this is back on 27 Sep 2019 (see link) GH's counsel filed Motion to Dismiss & then on 14 Oct there was a hearing on 'Motion to Compel' re the Philly Inquirer concerning the video interviews you referenced. The way I read this is that the Judge said 'Nope' to both. I think this will further press GH to take whatever plea deal the Commonwealth Attorney is offering. But he may still press for a jury trial. Time will tell. Looking at the 2 main news outlets covering the story I don't see any updates. Here is a link to the electronic docket sheets https://ujsportal.pacourts.us/DocketSheets/CPReport.ashx?docketNumber=CP-39-CR-0005538-2018&dnh=ydjtESJlJf%2fH60wd1QajOg%3d%3d

  14. The "discussion" of COVID veered way off the context of Drum Corps. It quickly turns into dueling bar graphs, self-aggrandizing pseudo-scientists, and personal attacks. If you are a moderator why would you want to have to constantly police something like that? Easier to cut it off entirely. This is a privately owned website and I don't blame them.

  15. Well I like to get the on the ground view of others experiences with this mess without dealing with biases of other places I could look. At least here I don’t get called a leftist because I asked a question (cuz you know we’re all alike) 😜

  17. Maybe because this is a website related to Drum Corps? If I want information on COVID-19, DCP is one of the last places I would look to. But that's just me.

  19. The last thread relating to Covid was supposed to be an encouragement thread and people totally abused it by posting things that were not encouraging, not to mention continually political cheap shots disguised as Covid concerns. It was enough to make some people stop posting here, possibly including the original poster of the thread, who I believe was quarantined at the time he started it. It ran for far longer than it was topical. Its abusers could have started their own threads that were not claimed to be about encouragement, but they chose to hijack that one instead.

  22. What may be interesting is the current appeal by Bill Cosby. I think one of the appeals revolves around permitting the testimony of the women from the past, who were not part of the charges against Cosby. That might have some impact on the Hopkins case, one way or the other, depending on the appeal outcome.

  24. I thought he had said he made a decision to isolate himself at the time, but perhaps not. Sorry if I did not remember or provide the entire story. It wasn’t really the point. The point was the thread was supposed to be an encouragement thread in our dealing with Covid and the person who started it was affected in a significant way, so it was not a trivial or primarily political matter to him.

  28. Wellllll..... lets just say I feel good that my states leaders wear masks when they address the public.... and can actually say the word “mask”. However our LT Guv had a problem when this started as he went out for a walk with his mask and scared the crap out of people. Dude is size of a redwood and looks (more than) kind of like a biker (shaved(?) head and salt n pepper goatee). He told of the experience on his twitter feed and someone said “have you looked in the mirror you would scare people wearing a mask”. Lt Guv response was “true”...

  31. I don’t know if a blanket amnesty for all who have been banned is warranted. Some were pretty vulgar and offensive with sexist and homophobic remarks. However there were others who seemed to be gone and it did seem as if they were banned because they got on the wrong side of some folks. Granted, objectionable posts may have been deleted before I saw them, so there may have been good reason for banning, but it seemed arbitrary. I don’t know if DCP has any kind of appeal process, and perhaps banned members could appeal, but with a few, they could be readmitted and we’d have endless rants about COVID-19 being the fault of DCI and electronics and the only vaccine is G bugles.

  33. Let’s take proactive measures to help each other at least in the mental health area. If you’re bouncing off the walls, feeling panic creep in, or just need a sympathetic ear, post it here and let’s work to encourage each other. We WILL get through this but it will take time. If you want to start the blame posts go somewhere else. Love you all!

  34. "There were exceptions to the difficulty of the concert music. " If we were just two dinosaurs sitting together shooting the bull in the back of the bus, I would humbly suggest to my esteemed colleague and student of the great Jerry Shellmer that speed and rhythmic complexity are not the only determinants of difficulty. Cambridge's "Malaguena" is more exposed than any other production in the show, at least in terms of brass: isolated conducted attacks, balance, blend, intonation, antiphonal voice entrances, dynamics...etc. There's simply nowhere to hide. Granted, there's little "rudimental" drumming, but even the percussion entrances were very exposed. On paper, the whole thing looks simple from a construction standpoint, it's true. But in practice it was the single most judge-able couple of minutes in the show. Besides, Jerry's drum writing provided plenty of "old school" throughout the rest of the routine. As for the Troop piece, pretty much the same things apply, though there is more traditional drumming therein and a few meter and tempo shifts. I was in the stands at Roosevelt Stadium when Barbara Bergdoll conducted "South Rampart Street Parade" the day that SKEK recording was made. Even though the tempo (not to mention title) would suggest it was "march-able", I was glad we could hear every single note from horns and drums as they stood in that concert formation. Unforgettable. Kevin's won the Dream that day by just over 3 tenths. It was the first time a non-Jersey corps had placed first in the history of that show.

  36. Just wanted to share my little summer routine of the last few years, and God do I miss it. I work a summer restaurant job (teaching pays like #### in Colorado), and our getting-older Great Dane can't handle the intense mountain sun (day walks mostly amount to laying lazily in the grass). So, every summer night, for the past few years, I strictly avoid checking DrumScorps notifications on my phone at work; then I get home at 11:00ish or midnight, make myself a cocktail or pour myself a beer (and grab a few extra), take the pup on a much-cooler late night walk, and finally check the scores for the evening. After digesting said scores, I'd then look at the recaps and digest the caption placements, and would wrap up the walk by searching YouTube for bootlegged videos from the night, or rewatching those I had found from the night before. Maybe would post some booze-soaked thoughts on DCP upon returning home, or wait until I got up the following afternoon to do so. All of that routine is still in place --- except for the checking of scores. Now I'll listen to a podcast or some music or just think, but god do I miss the ritual of diving deep into the drum corps world while unwinding every night. It is a noticeable absence from the nighty walk. Just seems like a part of summer is gone. Life is good, and everyone I love is healthy, but I thought I'd lament the noticeable absence of an activity I love dearly : )

  37. I saw them in Mc Cormick Place when they won the '65 VFW. One of my mentors was judging, and he found a perch for me and my friend, Tommy Howell, one row behind the GE judges, from which we watched the entire finals show. In my opinion, it would be futile to try to describe the Royal Airs. The audio recording exists, of course, and it's amazing, but even that pales by comparison to "being there". This must be considered in the context of drum corps in 1965, and I'm not sure that's possible anymore. A "big" horn line had 45 brass. There were no keyboards, timpani or other pit instruments. The Royal Airs didn't even feature contra basses that season and may have had only 2 of the newly-introduced mellophones. And then there was the drum line, and their marching design and skill. One would have to immerse oneself in the corps music and standards of the era to fully appreciate the Royal Airs. The late Gail Royer claimed they were the best corps he had ever seen. I'm with him. (Ok, not the "late" part.)
