I will go on the record to say that touring will never, ever go back to the way it was pre-COVID; it just won't! The best any organization could hope for in 2021 is traveling to communities that are 300 miles away or less, out and back trips; and that hinges on if there is a performance schedule and available venues to rehearse and/or perform. Larger venues like Atlanta Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium or a Detroit Ford Field availability is doubtful or affordable based on socioeconomic factors. These factors relate to and influence one another. All of these venues have to rethink how they can safely operate for high school, college or professional events let alone allow other events such as drum corps to take place in their facilities. School districts are considering changes to public health measures within multi-use facilities to reduce infectious disease transmission to accommodate their own extracurricular activities. Transportation of large groups is another big liability; is COVID spreading where your organization is going?3 points

Congrats to the all the folks at Regiment who made the Phanathon a success! Really well done everyone. You appealed to all generations of alum, support staff and friends/fans of the corps with respect, kindness, and FUN! Folks should stop by the site during July for the additional content. You won’t be disappointed and while you’re there, contribute!2 points

I'm bored so I'll answer with a simple "yes". Here are my suggestions; others feel free to expand on these: 1) Reduce corp size to a "Pep Band" status only requiring one bus to eliminate extra buses & extra staff thus reducing cost. 2) Eliminate all equipment trucks. All instruments will be stored & transported in the bus bay. 3) The single bus will pull a small trailer for food prep & storage. (see #4) 4) All meals reduced to Oats, PB&J, Ramen Noodles, & Pop Corn. McDonald's Dollar Menu may also be utilized periodically for incentives/rewards. (For a small surcharge, fruit cups maybe added but will require cold storage in trailer.) 5) Eliminate using all schools for overnight stays. All sleep will be employed on the bus between events. 6) Add frequent WalMart visits for restroom, AC breaks, snacks, & toiletries. 7) Reduce all performances to a "standstill" style performance on the track thus eliminating extra staff for design, teaching, cleaning, etc & rehearsal venues.2 points

I love Courtney's reactions. Its raw and real imo. I have been married since 2001, and for the first five years, never introduced my wife to drum corps. In 2006 she saw me watching the espn broadcast DCI Finals, sat down next to me and loved it. We went to Riverside in 2007, and she nearly had a cow, I mean Courtney on steroids lol. She thought it was the coolest thing she had ever seen. In fact I remember the people around us loving her because of her reactions, especially after i explained to them it was her first ever live show. Needless to say now my wife is hooked on drum corps. God help me if I tell her we arent going to a show, I will be coming home to a empty house.1 point

Open Class corps do get paid for appearances at World Class shows, but it's significantly less than what the WC corps receive. The standard rate for a WC corps is $2,600 per event. Open Class finalists get $1,800 per event, while non-finalists get $700 per event. One exception - new or re-emerging corps in Open Class receive $0 per event in their first year.1 point

Not sure what you mean, are you referring to the heatstroke meltdown and Cavaliers/police intervention in Pittsburg, KS in 2006? I was marching a different corps at that time but obviously knew people there.1 point

I think where I was going with this was, youtube is a content platform - if you put out good content you will get subscribers and you will get more interest in your content - if DCI wants to grow its audience, it needs to grow its social media footprint. Why is DCI not allowed to post more content? Is it simply because of music copyright issues with the shows performed? Some youtube channels that are more popular than DCI: Ask a mortician Kittisaurus - since 10/19/20191 point

And of course, the Blue Devils are beating everyone & have been named DCI Champion-Elect.1 point

On a serious note, I could see a different tour model that would involve more regional shows & possibly eliminating some of the smaller events. As the school housing issue continues to be a problem, that model might include more hotel stays at the regional shows or allow the corps to house at their home facility for shorter travel distances. If some of the smaller show venues were cut, that tour model time frame maybe reduced leading up to the championships. The reduced tour savings could be transferred to pay for more large group hotel housing? (hotel discounted group rates?) But then you have to subtract the lost show payments from the smaller events. Of course, there's always the "hostel" model for tour accommodations. I hear some hostels even offer cheap food. And drugs; there could be drugs...1 point

I know I know, you can’t compare scores from different shows but it’s so exciting to see Phantom Regiment in the top five!1 point

Yeah. While I feel confident about what Hopkins did and what he deserves, I also feel it's absolutely true that the system is set up to the advantage of the police and prosecution and not the accused. (One of countless examples: the police can lie to you, but you can't lie to them, and even if your lie doesn't impede their investigation, you can be punished for it if it *might* impede an investigation. And I have seen many former prosecutors and former police give this advice: *never* talk to the cops without your lawyer.) And yet, the crime clearance rate is terrible. Only about 50% of murders ever get solved. It's even worse for less serious crimes. It seems our systems are designed less for preventing crime or catching criminals than for prosecuting and punishing the accused.1 point

Ya, well I will never subscribe to them ever again. I will do everything in my power to warn people. Sad.1 point

What make this a medal contender is not so much the food combination but calling it a "Fajita". Bonus points for Pace "picante sauce".1 point

2023 - Courtney, now flush with cash from watching DCI videos, buys DCI and changes it's name to DCI (Drum Courtney International).1 point

Twenty years ago, probably every such twist and turn in the case would have resulted in a new article, or more than one. Local media has just been crushed in the past decade and a half, partly because so many outlets had fallen into the hands of investors who saw them as a license to print money and partly because of predatory practices by Facebook (and to a lesser extent Google) who more or less forced outlets to give away content for free, and then to "pivot to video" (what a boondoggle that was). The once huge local paper in my neck of the woods now has fewer than one-tenth the number of reporters it did in the 1990s. We'd know a lot more about the case now, and we might have known about it sooner, if local media was thriving. Lots of juicy scoops from sources public and private, probably including Hopkins himself leaking to a reporter who convinced him that he was sympathetic to his position. (A tip to news readers: when you see a reporter credit "a source familiar with X's thinking" or something like that, nine times out of ten that means X himself is the source.)0 points
