  1. thank goodness rational adults in the org are acknowledging there's been a problem for decades. that doesn't take being woke, just being a real human being who acknowledges that people with experiences different from their own do in fact exist.

  2. Seriously the article says that Cadets will try to make sure everyone feels a part of the corps (aka included) and only thing you get is sexual orientation. I read it as checking that no one is shunned, threatened, harassed, etc, etc for any reason.

  3. I’m reading it as the corps will not put up with exclusive or bullying behavior by any individual member. That’s not being “woke” that’s saying they’re not going to put up with anyone’s crap that could harm another member or the corps itself. Had the same thing where I worked and so do many other places. And in this overly legalese world you have to put down in writing what you wouldn’t put up with. Otherwise some clod will use it as a loophole “you didn’t tell me that...”

  4. I don’t think sexual orientation and identity will be the only focus or perhaps even major focus of this committee. Other corps have issued similar statements since the death of George Floyd and the unrest that has followed. Earlier this week Spirit of Atlanta issued a statement apologizing for past shows that have appeared to some as romanticizing a South is viewed as racist. There are also corps today that are racially diverse that have some serious racial issues in their past, especially those with long histories. If anyone would be aware of the importance of addressing racial issues, it is Denise Bonfiglio. Her father was a sticker that anyone who wanted to march and could should be allowed the opportunity to do so at a time welcome was not on the doormat of other corps. She probably learned from example.

For the next few years, young William was not allowed “off the block”, but one fateful summer day in the early […] View the full article

  7. In my humble opinion, she isn’t off to a very good start when she insults millions of victims of serious, oppressive, and/or violent racial injustice by saying: “The political, economic, and social unrest that we face daily is unprecedented.“

  11. Forget the "rockets" and the "bombs". This tune (and this version) should be our new National Anthem. The Troopers have always known how to make a statement.

  13. I'm not connected to the Cadets, but just by way of comparison: the non-profits performing arts organization I work for is undergoing a similar process to what the Cadets have outlined. It's not my place to get in specifics of what I've heard people share in these discussions, but I can say that I found, as we devled into this subject, that white employees and BIPOC employees have pretty different views about how racially inclusive the organization has been.

  14. Perhaps none, but remember we view things differently today. A non Cadets situation could be an example. Did anyone blink an eye when the Bridgemen, a drum corps from a very northern city in a very northern state, closed in 1979 and 1980 with a Civil War themed ending where quasi-Confederate flags were used and in some shows the South won the battle? It was considered fun and when the Union and Confederate leaders were arm in arm, all’s well that ends well. Today it would never fly, and the kids who march would probably refuse to do the show.

  16. I’m sure the Cadets as the overall group have always tried to do this. Got a feeling this is looking deeper into individual members actions or comments.

  20. Cadets go all in as social justice warriors. This is the biggest threat to the activity we love. Why are they focused on the sexual orientation of the members? DCI is sliding down a slippery slope.

  23. The only problem with this ( although it would be nice ) Many of the top corps do not have a local base, Many corps would not even be around today if it weren't for potential members from many states away. Many staff brought members from their areas ( HS students to fill spots in corps ) How many members are actually from the areas of corps. My experience with this , I would say very few. I would agree local membership would solve some of the problems although the days of sending members home after a day of rehearsal is gone. The days of heading off to Mc Donalds to grab something quick is gone. If we went back to any of that or shoving kids in death trap school busses the outrage of the public would be huge and even with liable situations. Creative thinking for sure is needed moving forward and being discussed for sure but we are in very hard times and handling it will be a very delicate situation for sure.

  24. Oh god, don't remind me of Winchester... that parade REALLY tried me, IMHO. Especially near the end when you're going uphill before that left turn to the review stand and the crowd. The only good thing is right after that stand, you're basically done.

  26. What are you saying, that a limited tour does not serve the 2021 members? If so, how about the potential 2025 or 2030 members if that corps is no longer around? Each corps has to look at finances and determine a course of action that will keep them on the field after 2021. If that means a limited tour in 2021, and possibly reduced recruits and lower scores, then so be it. The reality is this pandemic has forever changed our lives and there is no going back. You can plan to try and return to life as before (which will not happen) or you can plan for the new normal. Three to five years from now you will be able to look back and see which people and organizations had the vision to synthisize and extrapolate this new normal.

  27. And, at the same time, DCI wants the "top" corps separated around the country so that show sponsors can attract a crowd to see a top-12 "headliner". It would be easy: just have the top-12 talk with each other and plan to only attend shows as a group and any others would be used as fill. It has always amazed me that the corps established DCI to organize and promote "the tour" when the corps themselves reserve the right to determine which shows they'd plan to attend. In essence, DCI is simply a logistics and relationship management company that books venues for the drum corps to play in but can't promise nor calculate revenues or profits until the corps choose the shows in which they want to perform. Does that sound like a "tour management" company? To me, that sounds like a cat-herding organization with remarkable success. I wonder what's wrong with DCI continuing that relationship and booking role to capitalize and leverage on it's long successes to provide venues in which corps participate in local "mini-tours". Dan's office certainly has the experience, if not the immediate capacity, to handle the job. At some point, potentially, if those tours support corps' rebuilding, the independent mini-tours could be linked together into a national "tour" like current regionals, and end up back in Indy (or Bloomington, please, God before I die). It would take resources, but it seems foolish to discard decades of tour management experience despite some corps' insistence that they can perform the same tasks better/cheaper.

  31. As a history buff, July 4th is more than a celebration of independence, it is a celebration of all our years, and this year we may need it more than ever. Not necessarily in any order 2002 Boston Crusaders “You Are My Star” 2013 Bluecoats “to look For America” 1996 Bluecoats “American Celebrations” 1984 Suncoast Sound “Vietnam” 2011 Madison Scouts “New York Morning“ 1987 Star of Indiana “Greatest Show on Turf” the circus is pretty Americana. You could also include 1988 with “Porgy and Bess, 1992 is pretty obvious, and perhaps 1985. After all, Disney is pretty American. Four shows from the Cadets (could be more): 1987 Copland Show, 2014 “Promise:An American Story, 1984 “West Side Story” and 1982 with “Rocky Point Holiday.” I used to go to Rocky Point as a kid, and associate it with July and summer. Honorable Mention: since I’m from Massachusetts and spent more than a few July 4th’s at the Esplanade listening to the Boston Pops and watching fireworks, I would have to include 1983 and 1992 Phantom Regiment with the 1812 Overture and 1976 Madison Scouts with “Stars and Stripes Forever”

  35. For me, Garfield's show the summer after 09/11. I really appreciated it and it was very good. Not an entire show, but Anaheim Kingsmen "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" from 1972 also works. (Zapruder-like film quality)

If safety, consideration, responsibility puts me above as you say the rest of us'Im ok with that. I guess ignorance can be bliss but for some ignorance is just ignorance.
