It’s sad that some will be angry because an organization wants safety, fiscal responsibility, and longevity.7 points
-
It is also good that some Corps are looking at the financials and making a a decision based on reality6 points

Me, too. On the trusting. It's hard for me to grapple with all the factors and details involved and how they might play out for each corps. Why BD and SCV leaders don't deserve the benefit of the doubt here - that they are likely making smart decisions on behalf of their organizations - is puzzling.4 points

Since I did a band cancellation topic, I figured I would do a DCI 2021 topic. I will update as we learn more. Below is what we know so far. I'd be really surprised if there is anyone who longs for the return of drum corps more than yours truly. I've been involved since 1960. When there is a safe strategy for this, I'll be at the head of the line. But I would ask my colleagues to consider facts, not pipe dream fantasies. Read what JimF says, above: "Lol just did a NYT link to where I would be in line to get a vaccine." Does anyone actually think 18-20 year old musical athletes are going to be at the front of THAT line? Logic says "no" to that. Think about the ramifications of large groups of un-vaccinated young people traveling thousands of miles to converge at one venue to do an un-judged "Showcase" performance over a weekend in Indy in August, then returning whence they came. I want drum corps back so bad I can taste it, but the corps that have declined to make that trip are the sensible ones, and the rest may not have the option, no matter how much they wish it. In the words of Duke Ellington, I don't want "to tear the seams of anyone's dreams", so by all means, dream on. Just recognize that you are dreaming. Maybe it will come true. I'd like that. I3 points

Each corps has to look at what is financially possible as well as logistically feasible. It is sad, but I trust each corps’ admin to do what is best.3 points
-
Yeah it’s not like the activity has been growing new corps to replace any that go under. Once a corps goes under just another hole that isn’t filled....3 points
-
So you’d encourage organizations to abandon fiscal responsibility and member experience to so you can watch marching band?3 points
-
I believe its up to each state's Governor. In N.J., our Governor isn't allowing any fans at NFL games, even though they're open air stadiums. He also wouldn't allow fans at Rutgers football games. If anyone follows college football, that was the reason why, in the interest of fairness, no Big Ten game can have fans in the stands.2 points

From the latest news, I and many others don't have much choice. Life goes on. Live our lives scared or just live?2 points

Based on THEIR reality. SCV's financial and local realities are going to be different than some of the other corps out there, and DCI's proposal allows each member to work at a level that they feel is productive and comfortable and safe, for the members as we as the organizations themselves. Bluntly, with the upheavals and challenges at SCV recently, their best route might have always been to take a year and regroup anyway. They made the right decision for them.2 points
-
Yes - BITD outside of the top 10 or so it was always surprising when some Corps showed up with either a lot more or fewer members than they had in the previous year. I recall Guardsmen going from a full corps one year to ~ 25-30 brass the next. And 78 Cavaliers (non-finalist) with maybe 40 brass had a full line the next year. (for all you young whippersnappers out there, back then most Corps had far fewer college music-education majors than today, and primarily recruited more-or-less locally).2 points

IMHO The challenge (financial aside for a moment) for the Corps closer to Indy will be getting a place where they can bring in 150 members plus staff & rehearse for a few weeks.2 points

Ah yea snide comments about people older than you. Doesn’t help with credibility2 points

find the guidelines and protocols document. the cost will far exceed whatever revenues come in2 points

I always said a corps #1 responsibility was to make sure they are able to field a corps the following year.1 point

Publicly calling someone ignorant seems unlikely to achieve a better understanding.1 point
-
I’m not saying your conclusion is wrong, but for those of you who think the notion of a corps having any kind of a season or going to Indy is ignorant, irresponsible, unintelligent, or anything else you have said or implied, why don’t you go after those corps who have announced they plan to do those things instead of ganging up on one enthusiastic young person who has no control over what will happen?1 point
-
pointing out things like cost and logistics have zero effect on this poster. the guidelines and protocols DCI is going to require is going to jack costs way up. like way up. so what revenue other than fees from the kids are corps going to get?1 point
-
Well that’s the 3rd or 4th post I’ve made that you (ONiels) added a laughing face at lower right as a response. Hope you do make a corps so you can learn maturity when dealing with others1 point

I'm having issues with calling 23 year old adults "kids". I dunno, the whole reality thing. Has life, parenting and our educational system failed this hard? Perhaps, marching band isn't the real issue.1 point

And a laughing emoji with no explanation.... is everything a us vs them generation gap to you or just drum corps.1 point

To me this boils down to "the devil is in the details". From reading DCI's announcement,it sounds like DCI is still working things out,in anticipation of their Winter meeting.1 point

It's not too late to join the bandwagon of us and corps who feel it's not worth taking a chance on a watered down season. There's a lot of logistics, expenses, shaking the volunteer trees, etc. that some corps feel is not for them at this time. The top corps, who skip whatever a 2021 "season" is like, will get great talent come next November, and their war chests will be stronger to maintain or sign up the top teaching/writing staff.1 point

Perhaps a thought that needs to be said out loud: When corps management is deciding on their plans for 2021, they are not just looking at 2021 members. They are looking at 2022 and beyond. Taking the pain in 2021 might help them survive 2022 and later seasons1 point

Just had a flashback from my days at the end of the local corps era. Know some corps that the decision was to close shop instead of drown in red ink and have people holding unpaid bills. Applaud any corps that holds back in order to be around in later years.1 point
-
All these people who are posting about the 23 year old extension or any extension will tell you both that they are well informed with years of experience on what is feasible and good for DCI and the current kids. They just want to feel good about telling the little kids about how well old they are, with personal stories and inside jokes.1 point

Thanking the Cavaliers for their decisions and direction. Happy to read this.1 point

If a 23 year old makes a corps then there is one less spot for anyone else to get. Someone loses out no matter what. Corps still fill the maximum number of members for the upper corps right? Not arguing or saying what should be done. Just bringing up the point there is going to be pain no matter what is decided1 point

He should be in the Hall of Fame. His works are a thing of beauty and absolutely masterful. Keep up the great work Moe :D1 point

Moe Knox is a class act. When Darlene Bonfiglio passed away I was looking for some photos of her in her 27th Lancer uniform. Where did I go? Moe...he knows...and he had some great photo's. :) Thanks Moe.1 point

Hi all! Moe Knox is a GIANT of this activity. Moe deserves all the kind words that have come forth. Moe also deserves a prominent place in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Till then, Moe will be featured in the next DCA Championship Guide and Yearbook. Thanks to William Aldrich-Thorpe, Drum Corps World staff writer, the Moe Knox Story will be major part of our 2006 publication. Pick up a copy in Rochester, or subscribe to Drum Corps World, where the piece will also be featured. Moe Knox and drum corps. . . . it's the same thing. Thanks big guy!1 point

Moe is one of my drum corps heroes. It's so obvious to me that he loves what he does.... A few years back, my wife and I asked Moe if he had any early-'70's photos of the Magnificent Yankees and the Owego Mello-Dears. I asked him to use his judgement and print us some 5x7's. A week later, Moe handed me an envelope with four photos of each corps. Three of the Mello-Dear photos included my wife, Colleen. One of those three featured her! And one photo of the Yankees included me. When I asked him how he managed to find those particular photos, he said, "I remember you guys!" Moe is the best! He truly deserves to be in the Hall of Fame! :)1 point

My first Moe Knox photo was a beautiful closeup portrait of Vicky Drummond leading the incredible Blue Rock during "Baby Elephant Walk." I carried this photo with me during nine years serving in the Navy Band. A little unrelated question here, if I may: In today's world, with all the standards and rules set by DCI and DCA, how does a photographer get permission to photograph all those shows as Moe did for so many years? Was Moe working on a contract basis at the shows, or was he working on his own? I bought dozens of photos from Moe (remember Garfield's famous "Peace Sign" formation in the 60's? I got that one from Moe, too. Did the money for all those photos go directly to Moe? (I hope) Or was he required to give a cut to the shows or the organizations? I've always wondered how Moe did it for so many years given the rules of today. Thom B)1 point

In the mid-70s, my drum corps buddies and I would just yell, "Moe Knox!" out of the blue. We knew the name from his photo credits in Drum Corps News. That was the cue for all of us to immediately strike the perfect "high mark time" pose we often saw in Moe's photos there. We would hold the pose until one of us fell over. Moe Knox!! Moe and I go back some 30 years, in the drum corps circle, and also in the naval ships, as we both worked on the U.S.S. NEW JERSEY, and we both sailed on the John Brown, out of the Harbor of Balitmore. also we both have been involved with the rail road. Also as we all know Moe has been doing photo's of drum corps since the late 50's. My wife and I had asked Moe to do some our wedding photo's, and also he did a very wonderful video for us. When our Miss Elizabeth was born, Moe was there to be one of the first ones to take her photo, and to put in Drum Corps World. This leads me to a story the only a few know. Just after 9-11, Moe was on his way home from a drum corps show, in New Jersey. As Moe was driving on Rt.6, over the Bear Mountain (New York State) a New York State Trooper pulled Moe over. Now this is just after 9-11, and he asked Moe what was he filming, as Moe has a camcorder set up to record his travels. Moe tryed to explay that he does this so that some day he will get that great event on tape, and send it to tv show, of the news The Trooper then told Moe to turn it off and put it away, in witch Moe did. Any time that you call Moe at home, ask him if he has any ice cream, as Moe loves his ice cream. Also as Director of the Ambasadors of New York have had the great pleasure of have Moe march as my senior color guard captain, in 3 parades, the the corps did over the 4 of July, a few years ago. I for one think that Mr M should be in the Hall of Fame, as he has the history of drum corps in his photos. and what better man to in shrine in the Hall of Fame.1 point

Moe Know is definately an east coast legend and Icon. He would be at all the competitions in the area, no matter what corps circuit you were involved taking pictures of all the corps that competed. I know I have some moe knox photos from my years marching with the Cranford Patriots. He is a truly a person that deserves drum corps hall of fame status!!!1 point

I would love to see Moe inducted into the Hall of Fame ! He has such a love of what he is doing and it really shows in the photos. Nobody can compete with his photos. I recently emailed him looking for a picture of my brother telling him what years he marched and that he played bari... and a general description on him...low and behold a few days later in my mailbox, I have a letter and a photo sheet...and they were of my brother ! You don't meet many people these days who would take the time and effort do to that for someone. THANKS MOE !!!!1 point

Besides Moe being the Drum Corps Icon that he is......most people do not know that Moe is also a Shriner and devotes his "spare time" to driving kids and their family to the Shriners Orthopedic hospital in Springfield Mass, and the Shriners Childrens Burns Hospital in Boston. bump. It was wonderful to see Moe Knox and David Rice at the Dover, NJ, show working their camera magic. So many years, so many photos by Moe. Folks need to spend more time at Moe's booth. So many times I've asked questions like, "What do you have from '94?...'99?...'03? Moe would say, "Check this out." It would be photos I wanted. Thanks for your Moe tribute, Bill. I look forward to it. Moe deserves this and more, but he sure can be contrary.1 point
