  1. I hate the cold more. But I am thinking of starting a new career as a snake wrangler. And starting a palmetto bug circus as my side gig.

  3. Might be some good money for the snakes plus the profit of transportation to some churches in Kentucky. I watched this entire series a couple of years ago & it was mesmerizing. Or as JimF-LowBari stated, selling Alligators? I told my wife I would like to visit this church. She will not go with me... 😁

  4. Well, FloMarching did have a younger color analysis guy on the air, but we see how that worked out.

  6. Yeah, I have all those shows on BluRay and have a pretty enviable AV system (actually two systems). I have heard interviews and podcasts about all these shows, so sorry, I’m going to pass on this one. I would watch it if it was a PBS special. I already pledge.

  7. yup. every "new trend" in drum corps has had great examples and bad ones. props are no different. grounding percussion equipment early on had great and bad examples. remember double flags? asymetrical drill? 3 valve bugles had great and bad lines. kevlar heads had great and bad lines. Bb brass? had both. electronics...ditto.

  9. For Pride Month, we’re highlighting the excellent work of our Equality and Inclusion Committee, a group of Cadets members, staff, and Board members representing a wide range of backgrounds, races, ethnicities, ages and genders. Once a month during the winter and spring, the committee hosts a one-hour, organization-wide training session to cultivate a safe, inclusive, […] View the full article

  10. Guess it depends on the metrics used. The number of active corps in 1972 vs. 2021 is a pretty good one in my book to measure the health of the activity.

  11. Thank you. I remember some of the criticism of that show....that it was ballad intensive. Listen to the first ballad starting at the 2:45 mark. To me it is equally gorgeous. Just so nice. I'm sorry I cannot find a better or later season video but you will hear what I am referring to.

  12. or better yet, DCI caps the number of paid instructors AND props to provide parity between corps. Like what the NFL and NHL does. Drum Corps is dying. Do what can be done to cut down operating expenses so the activity has a chance for survival, and not for just a few.

  13. How about paying staff instead of $15,000 of junk every season

  14. Props are one of the many reasons modern drum corps is so expensive, negatively impact performers' experience and safety, and are divorced from actual music education.

  15. How about gator handler. Last week they caught one in a lake in Harrisburg. Found the owner who said it “got out somehow”. 😬 Sis and I thought it was funny as when our grandfather died late 60s we found out he had a 3 footer in the fireplace. Back in the days when you could buy a baby gator down south. Took a REALLY nice donation to Hershey zoo to get the #### thing out.

  16. I had a client for two years in Fort Myers. I even had the chance to experience Tropical Storm Henry during one such visit. Wonderful people. But the regularly schedule thunderstorms in the late afternoon were quite a havoc for flight scheduling. I have never experienced lightning like that anywhere else. Flying in from Atlanta with lighting all around the plane thinking "OMG - I'm here to die!"

  17. Thank you. I admit the show concept was not that clear and I could not decipher what they wanted to convey. There were a few issues. Teal guard uniforms on a green field blend too much so that they almost become invisible. However, the teal on the copper tarps at the front sideline was effective. I still don't understand the copper-colored rolling structures. That being said, that year I fell in love with Picture Studies from Adam Shoenberg specifically because of Will Pitts arrangement. I also love how Phantom linked it to the New World.

  19. To say nothing of the fact that almost all of the talking heads are old enough to be great grandparents to the current corps membership. No offense, I am that age as well, but when is it time to pass the torch?

  20. Ah, yes, the orange luggage trolleys... PR did some nice stuff with that front area, but as noted, the music was underwhelming.

  21. I can’t handle the talking heads explaining everything to me, either. I mean, you and I have probably forgotten more about drum corps than some of them will ever know.

  22. I always think that's a neat gimmick when corps put a boatload of other instrument/guard people on tenors or snares like BD did or all those guard members on bugle like The Cadets did. Corps should put every member out there on flags and rifles while the pit plays a drum feature. (or hell I dunno maybe that's been done)

  23. I really do appreciate your sentiment. For me, I not trying to bash or never intend to 'throw the MMs under the bus'. I feel as a musician, teacher, arranger, etc, that I have the right to critique any & all shows. Of course, it really doesn't matter unless the product becomes so bad that they can't sell tickets. Musicians, directors, singers, actors, dancers, designers etc, are the most critical people in the world. 😁 But if it's a design issue, I will 'throw them under the bus" along with many other fans, alumni, etc. FYI: talked to my former student who was in town last week. He was suppose to age out last year with BCA when the tour was canceled, but he's marching the "Celebration Tour" this summer. Can't wait to see him on his final tour next month! #MarchOn

  25. Rockford, IL = Parisian visual cues? Lol Stars brought us a lot of visual cues over the years. Some worked some didn’t. I trust their design staff to bring us something fun with this theme.

  31. Our local symphony has added video & lighting effects for their last two concerts. With the advances in portable LED walls & stage lighting, you'll begin to see them in corps productions sooner rather than later. 🤔

  33. Actually, I went to a concert ( classical) about 2 years ago and they had props, huge video screens lasers dancers, etc etc. They also spoke about how they felt they needed to bring the genre into this century and offer not just a musical but visual experience...interesting

  34. I listened to the Mozart as well as the recording you posted. I don't see a similarity. I see on dcxmuseum.org there a reference to the title of the piece with the composer being Colin Mawby. Here is an example of a recording of the Mawby version. It is what Phantom played.

  37. Topic point: no props except for 'character boxes' for soloist. Speaking of Phantom ballads, I need this in my life: Suggestion: Use a great quality headphones or in ear monitors. ❤️💔❤️

  38. Sometimes the blending into the field can be design intent. It can be for reasons like accenting the front copper color as you mentioned, it can also be to show the flag design more. It can also be to hide a guard who may not be as proficient in body movement . Good design can accent strength and hide weakness. It can also be just bad choices IF it was not by design choice. Personally I do not know why but it is not unusual to accent strengths and hide weakness. It's always been done. At least by smart designers..lol

  39. I know it's just a theater event with 'reruns', but all three venues in my area have pre-sold ZERO tickets. I know band director effect will change that but I thought there would be a few tickets sold this weekend. 🤔🤐

  45. Show themed uniforms should be in that list as well. There have definitely been some doozies. Crown 2018 comes to mind. I liked them, but they could have been toned down a LOT and been more effective.

  46. My point is, because you need some clarification to assist you with any real constructive feedback, is that the majority have produced poor quality props or introduced props as an afterthought. Many like Phantom and the Cadets, with the exception of the ‘DOOR’, have never figured out how to use them. Others beat you over the head with the literal aspects of props i.e. bridges. Then repeat musical phrases like London Bridge is Falling Down as if the audience is too ignorant to figure it out. The list of successful prop use is much shorter than the list of colossal failures.

  47. Good lord - what a cheerful worldview. That one would even think that a prop on the field is the result of a "design staff that lacks imagination or the ability to write and/or teach a drill for music that tells a story" - that such a thing would even enter someone's mind - is really something... I'm not suggesting that all are well done, but I've never once thought that the use of props were to make up for a lack of imagination or drill design ability.

  48. Not a fan because most of the time they look cheesy, make the field look cluttered, and drive up the cost of production without a good R.O.I.

  49. The key phrase is "They're not going anywhere no matter how much everyone complains, so it's best to just sit back and enjoy the show or leave the stadium and never look back."
