  1. That entire book in '84 was flawless. I remember sitting through the ending of 1812 and wondering how the shows were going to get better than that... then SCV played their ##### off and just... faded out quietly. It was such a confident move, we were slack jawed. Then BD came out and by the end of La Fiesta the place was bonkers. Following that BD horn line should have been an impossible task, but Garfield just quietly started the show and by the time they got into it, everyone was on the edge of the seats. As much as Tonite nailed down the title though, that was Barbara's show. It doesn't work without her.

  2. Beyond the gutsy and emotionally moving performance, the real take-away for me is Jim Prime's exquisite brass score. As an arranger, he has always been in a class by himself.

  5. I fully expect many people to make the "all music is subjective" argument. (Or the "personal taste" argument.) What I'd love to hear (which admittedly takes a bit more time) is more detail—focusing particularly on the underlying elements of (in this case) SCV's music that you liked. It's certainly okay to say "I liked it." I'm just politely asking people to explain why they liked it. (I'm happy to explain further why I didn't—but it'll take some time and specific musical references to the show.) Heck, I'm even willing to watch (and listen) to SCV's show a dozen more times in a genuine attempt to appreciate it. But one of my points is that I shouldn't have to. Scott
