  1. The other thing about Tim: he has an easy going, gentle demeanor and he is invariably positive about the activity. There are worse ways to be.

  2. I guess I missed what Tim Hinton did wrong. 🤷‍♂️ I actually like the guy and his podcast. He’s also really good at his day job. He designs for a number of high school band programs in my home state (SC) and probably in other parts of the country as well.

  3. To be fair, he does have some interesting interviews from time to time.

  7. Oh, I see. Another self-appointed important person ($1 to Jim Schehr). So many of them in the “world of pageantry”. 🙄

  9. I was lucky enough to be in a suite this year and I watched every corps perform as well as the crowd reaction. I especially watched "The Blast Zone" which is made up of many alumni of two corps that weren't in Indy this year. This year was about celebrating DCI and performing for the crowd. I am not a judge and don't claim to be one. Three corps made "The Blast Zone" get on their feet multiple times during their show with before the final note. Those corps were Regiment, Cadets and Cavies. Judged or not judged, these three were the medalists based on the format this year.

  10. That's some interesting information. I actually feel a little guilty for ripping into Flo now. Their legal guy Wes seemed like a reasonable and well informed person, PLUS he's one of us, a MM and fan of the activity. Thanks for sharing this, keystone.

  13. Opera background, you say. Could we be seeing a return to Puccini?

  14. He managed Spirit of Atlanta when they returned to the top 12 in the early 2010s (and haven't gotten back since he departed). And he's had outreach roles with a couple opera companies, including the Lyric Opera in Chicago. If such a position is needed, he would seem the right person to fill it.

  15. Seems like an interesting move for Regiment: “As Phantom Regiment Inc. looks to the future and its continued growth in the world of performing arts education, it’s excited to name Dr. Todd Snead as its first CEO to oversee all aspects of the organization. Dr. Snead has extensive drum corps leadership experience as well as several years leading the educational programs for two of the nation’s top opera companies. He will lead an outstanding and experienced staff that includes David Warren, who is entering his third year as Corps Director, newly hired Operations Manager Chris Drake, Robin Lanning coordinating fundraising, and Robert Cawthorne driving merchandise and marketing efforts. “The combination of Todd’s credentials as an educator, his experience in the non-profit sector – including his history in drum corps, specifically – make him a uniquely qualified choice for Phantom Regiment,” said Kelly Couvelaire, Phantom Regiment’s treasurer. ‘We are so very excited to have him leading our team.’ “

  21. I always thought he called himself the “Beast of the Marching Arts” because he is a huge gym rat and has a long beard, all giving him a beast-like appearance.

  27. Looking at some very deep thoughts here, a lot of this has to do with how an organization puts certain things in perspective. Good example: My Brass technician told me he's got a friend who marched snare in a couple of top end DCI corps. They lost a contest. People in the guard were crying. This cat shook his head and said, "Why are you all crying? It's taco night!" If it's all about numbers/placement... things usually head to a bad place in so many ways. Things need to be in perspective. If a team ends up consumed... it rarely ends well. I'd like to meet this guy and ask him how good were those tacos, because I'll definitely have some.

  28. This brings to mind a mid '90's show coordinator not in DCI telling me that he made sure the staff was Paid. That experience really had him pretty messed up at one point. I don't think I've ever seen this person that upset about anything when he told me this. Eventually, that whole situation did get righted. The organization's kind of swept that part of their timeline down the memory hole. Personally, my thoughts are that you need to remember where you come from, even when it's uncomfortable and it hurts. It keeps one humble and things in perspective.

  33. I polled my kids last week regarding this question - my oldest (recent FMM and DCI drum major) said that they'd have been thrilled to march without scores, as their entire corps developed a mental complex about them during the summer. They said the corps likely would have been able to exhale and perform looser, and probably better. My youngest (offered spot with WC DCI but turned down due to focusing on athletics) said they didn't care one whit about how the corps would score, that the chance to play with other elite musicians and put on electric shows was the draw. Anecdotal evidence, sure, but it's all I got... Mike

  34. Flo Marching's national fan poll however had the Madison Scouts as the 2nd most favored Corps show this summer among the fans in this season of DCI Celebration. Troopers and Pacific Crest shows were also in the top 5 as most liked as the fans favorite shows this summer . Cavies, Boston, Bluecoats, Crown, BK, Blue Stars, et al were not " medalists " with the fans of the corps that performed on field exhibitions this summer according to their national fan poll " under this format ". So go figure.

  35. Cadets had two moments at "The Oil Can" during their performance. The condensed "Z-Pull" and the "Hand-on-the-shoulder Company Front" near the end of their show. You probably couldn't see the crowd reaction on the video feed.

  36. I wasn't there in person. However, Cavies and Phantom seemed electric even off of youtube videos I have seen of the finals night performances. Did not get that same feeling from Cadets. Wish I got to see Cadets in person

  37. I thought so based upon overall section performance. But who really knows. Dont know these podcast guys from a hole in the wall, at the end of their podcast here the two would have given the Sanford for best percussion in DCI among the touring corps this summer to Boston.

  38. right. you only deal with it when you want to dish it. it's been that way for years, so own it like I do being an ########. there's no shame in it. that said sorry to hear about the cancer diagnosis. i am dealing with it in my family, i wouldn't wish that on anyone. Fight on, if anyone is obstinate enough to beat it, it's you
