  1. I wouldn't say that as its not just Drum Corps. There are several examples of unacceptable behavior in the different groups. Racism in Hockey and NFL leadership (ie coaching), and Homophobia in sports to name a few. It just spotlights that we all need to reevaluate how we treat other individuals and how we identify/overcome our own individual biases.

  3. And we can't forget the classic Sky Ryders show from 1987. In my opinion one of the best adaptations to the football field.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2bo-Ns8JF8

  4. You can find garbage like this almost anywhere. Some are worse and/or more open than others. Difference is we now have more sources of information to bring it to light. edit: and more resources and processes to deal with it (thinking of what it was like when I started work 1980 for Uncle Sam) IMO society is getting better in this but still a long way to go.

  5. Read it, still confused. Context needed.

  6. File this in the ever-expanding "maybe drum corps culture is fundamentally irredeemable" column.

  8. I thought the same thing. If they have no tangible proof, that was a brave move. I had heard about this but assumed the corps had settled it because it hadn't hit the "news". I guess they didn't. And they meant drag in the slang term. Pretty sure that is why it was put in quotes. Also want to point out MAASIN has already had its own trouble. Just had a member arrested for domestic violence. It is discussed on their blog if you're interested in reading.

  9. I think Cadets are a spent force in terms of competing at the top of DCI. I think they are at the point where they can either design good shows for the bottom half of finals, or do "tradition" and be like the Troopers were 15 years ago.

  10. As part of our ROTC classes we were taught about counter insurgency. We were taught, if a "revolutionary" didn't care about getting caught or killed, it was virtually impossible to stop them from carrying out their act.

  11. I have waited to respond to this since I actually knew one of the "Dancing Grannys" victims. It was Tammy's first parade with the group. Tammy was the daughter of a very good friend at my church during my formative drum corps years. She was also a member of my church youth group my senior year of high school. Just a few weeks prior to this incident, I was in Chicago and saw the Halloween parade. They had every cross street blocked with trucks. Having marched hundreds of parades over the years, I would like to think that these events would be better protected. Unfortunately, if someone is hell bent on doing damage, they will find a tool, and a way to make it happen.
