  1. And if there is any scandal that could bring Acheson down, this is it. The lack-of-anniversary-transparency scandal.

  4. I would give them a bit of a break (we're still in the middle of a pandemic). My guess is the lack of revenue for the past two years has put them in a bit of a hole and they've had to scale back plans dramatically. They're probably just starting to get their feet underneath them. I'm sure we'll begin to see more come to life the closer we get to the summer.

  5. But think of the shade you could drip while dismissing pagentry leeches. That surely is worth taking the job for a week.

  6. Does DCI have any special plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary? So far, all I can find is merchandising. Maybe that’s it?

  8. Oh i totally had those. "Hey! watch them bounce forever. put your hand between them to stop them." Then we discovered how to throw them overhead across the yard and ringer them on small trees. Basically using them as bolas.

  9. Yah i'm just remembering things like Jarts...and having one go errant and lodge itself into the neighors fence to the point dad had to pull it out, i could not. Then were they considered unsafe to throw while the other team was standing behind their hoop? nope. "hahaha, neat, try again!" Or the build your own electronics set complete with metal parts and actual electrical hook up. I mean...like "plug this in and then see if it works!" ZAP. hahahaha! cool!

  11. FWIW, these registrations required a financial deposit that would indicated a relatively serious commitment. As to the topic, DCI did have a lot of 50th anniversary plans being made before Covid. Many of them may even still be in place. But I think one of the lesson learned from 2020 was not to get the cart ahead of the horse during a pandemic.

  12. Every public educator (not sure about private schools) in my state is subject to the same. Failure to report is a crime. Again, it's not just about training, it's about accountability to act. The extent of the reporter's responsibility is to, you know, report. From there, experts in various field regarding abuse take over. It's actually a huge relief to know that my "personal judgment" or "intuition" or whatever other things people who fail to act use as an excuse needs to be excluded from the process completely. Notice how blaming the victim for not speaking up has absolutely nothing to do with it? Yep, that's because it's irrelevant and disgusting.

  13. Hard to imagine, huh? That won't even buy you a soda at finals now or any other event, for that matter. No kidding about being so young at that time. How my parents ever let me travel alone to Whitewater at age 15 and 16 with other older corps kids is astounding. Of course when I was that age, they probably were hoping that I'd get lost or kidnapped or something.

  14. One of DCI's problems (among many) is their lack of transparency and communication. There has been virtually nothing from them about special events/performances they are planning for the 50th. Isn't is time for Mr. Acheson to step down? DCI needs a major shake-up, starting at the top.

  15. A peanut butter and jelly eating contest and a Gail Royer lookalike contest might be fun. Maybe Don Pesceone coming back from the dead and slapping the holy bejeezus out of Dan Acheson saying "WTF did you do?" Ok, that one's a little far fetched. Maybe just one of those Strongman punching bag machines with Acheson's face on the target,

  20. You know what's interesting... we've all become so caught up in the competition aspect of drum corps that we've forgotten what the real purpose of the activity is. That's why last season was so incredible. No rule books, no competition. The kids performed to perform and the corps spoke to the audience. The shows weren't perfect, but they were fun with multiple standing ovations. It was more pure last season than its been in decades.

  21. I think the entire model for both the Open & World Classes should be restructured. I just told my wife that the thought of having a 14 year old early HS female student tour with a 21 year old college student ( and according to their birthday could tour as a 22 year old) causes me to scratch my head. (And I was heavily involved as a corps staff member in my college & early band director years.) As a band director, I've always encouraged our students to wait until their senior year, right after graduation, to march. I've always thought that they would be more mature & would appreciate the content of their experience. Most students followed my advice except for one or two. My question is could DCI restructure the age limits for open & work class to help off set these vast age differences? Open Class 14-17 with 'high school" style oversight & world class 18-22 college age students? I forget the age limits for open class but it could be used as a 'feeder' format for world class? (I realize that it's already being used for that purpose but just speculating.) I, as a father, would not allow my 14 year old daughter to march in the current format unless I was on the bus with her as a staff member or volunteer. And I think any form of "Rookie Talent Night" should be in an open format in front of the entire corps plus staff. We have something similar at band camp every year but it's an open format & we're able to control the events. (All section leaders must show our staff the content, gag gifts, etc that will be presented.) I don't know, just thinking out loud. On a forum... 🤔🧐 And I love the drum corps experience & product...

  22. I'm advisor and board member of a social fraternity at IU that was suspended last summer for various things, including hazing. 12 organizations in IU Greek life are now booted off campus, about 1/5 of the total. Five more are in trouble with a status of cease and desist while investigations are ongoing. Eight others are on some form of disciplinary probation. You don't have to search long to find similar troubles at other colleges and universities. A couple of high school football teams have been in the news recently regarding hazing. Much like DCI, national fraternity headquarters' leaders, and the national association supporting most major fraternities, have all the right things to say, and by now many well-meaning policies in place. But enforcement is weak until a major disaster has unfolded. Supervision of 18-20 year olds mostly in charge of things on the ground in Greek organizations is even tougher. Drum corps and the tour offer unique circumstances for awful behavior. But awful behavior is wide-spread, maybe cultural in some way. Most days, I've no clue how to combat this. But also most days, I get reminded of how many of my students in the classroom are really decent kids anxious to have really decent lives.
