  1. No disrespect intended, but who pledged transparency? The same group that swept major issues under the rug for what appears to be several years until the monster couldn’t be ignored? If you believe them now then you are destined to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

  2. Sticking with the Bluecoats Alumni Corps theme, here’s a montage of photos from our experience this past summer, set to audio of our performance Semifinals night. Enjoy! https://medi-nerd.com/2022/12/29/throwback-thursday-bluecoats-alumni-corps-experience-through-our-eyes/

  3. So I’m at a family Christmas get together and one of my snooty cousins asked if I’m still into that “corny marching band s***”. Later on I slipped the Bluecoats audio into the playlist. Snooty cousin who thinks he knows everything about everything was totally dumbfounded. “What group is this?” “I’ve never heard an audience react like that in a concert hall” “What a touching story line”. When it was over I told him it was some of that “corny marching band s***. Then I had him watch the video. In conclusion, I was able to convert a civilian to the joys and artistry of drum corps! Thanks Bluecoats. I wish you all the best in 2023. 2022 will be hard to top!

  4. In the business world, project cancelations and company shutdowns never occur at a good time, and lots of things are always in-flight if and when the shoe drops. On the flip side is a leadership team having a difficult shades-of-gray go/no-go discussion, but before the decision can be reached, the rumor mill kicks in causing panic and effort pullback which itself can be costly, and can sabotage a resulting go decision. Had SCV hit the pause button a few days/weeks earlier, I think we'd just be debating another unfortunate chain of events. --tg

  5. I'll admit, this entry onto my list is a stretch since the Guardsmen are playing "Greensleeves", but considering it is the same melody as "What Child Is This?", I decided to roll with it. https://medi-nerd.com/2022/12/28/12-corps-of-christmas-1978-1982-guardsmen/

  7. Maybe we should model the tour around the cheapest housing sites. House the corps in clusters for 10-14 days and have shows in a 150 mile radius of that cluster, then move to the next cluster.

  8. Considering the skeletons they have in their closet... I wouldn't put it past them.

  9. Then how do you not enjoy SCV ripping their black pants off to reveal white pants in 1985? I know you've said before that you didn't like older shows, but if you enjoy uniform changes, 1985 SCV has to be near the top!

  10. If you ask fans of Carolina Crown when the corps’ rise to become one of the perennial competitors for the DCI World Championship, a good number of them would point to the 2003 season. After dropping out of finals the season before, Crown made a number of changes, not the least of which was the addition of Matt Harloff as brass caption head, a position he still holds as of this article. Crown’s horn lines are legendary for their power and dexterity, but it took time to build to that level, and 2003 was step #1. https://medi-nerd.com/2022/12/23/12-days-of-drum-corps-2003-carolina-crown/

  11. I don't' think I've ever quite noticed it as much until it was in a repeating gif....but there's a whole lot of marchers unzipping their fly before they get into the tunnel and gives the appearance of the, "Oh ####, not making it to intermission, maybe I can get back to my seat before the next corps" rush one sees on the toilets sometimes.

  12. I think there needs to be a rebuild of show sponsors. Let’s stop paying out appearance fees. Make EVERY corps work like open class. However every show operator should be required to provide housing and two fields per ensemble. (You want a third field? Cool, hit up your board to fund it) That paltry $500, or even $1500 isn’t worth it when the other expenses are so great, and your membership funds the activity anyway. Your corps may lose $15-20k in appearance fees, but can save 75-100k (or more depending on show quantity). Let show sponsors keep every dime they make. But since shows provide housing, more show operators means more free housing and fields. More shows means less housing costs, more performance opportunities for local groups to startup, less mileage in your equipment rental sum, and with operators keeping all moneys, it becomes more incentive for the sponsor to gamble show costs. Bonus for the operator if they can get sponsors to front costs in return for advertising.

  13. Schools are charging as much as they can. You don’t rent one gym, you rent enough rooms as you need according to how many students you have for each gender divided also age by group under and over 18, as well as staff and support staff. You are also passed ALL costs of using the facility back onto the renter. School Security, any required school staff to be present, custodian services, heating, cooling, water, etc. Everything in a school runs via building management system, and thus can be quantified and charged back to the renter. An open class corps out east here was recently quoted near $3000 for an 8 hour sunday to hold an experience camp. That was for the gym, band room, and cafeteria. Only to be used for space. Not sleeping showering, or staying beyond the 8 hour day. This price was escalated from what they paid only a year ago. school rooms and fields are rented a la carte. If fields aren’t already reserved for school sports. They start at 500 each, and can go as high as 2500 depending on turf, condition, stands, lights, etc.

  14. They played it too #### slow in 79. It was like a funeral dirge. They were trying to avoid the long open roll being judged. I saw Kilties do it a few times with Syne. I liked the tag better in 79. I like how Salzman slipped in a little Henry V with The Red Pony ending.

  16. Unless I missed it, which I don't think I have, VMAPA isn't ceasing operations, just not fielding either corps for 2023, which means that as director of SCV, she is part of the ship going down, and more than likely had a hand in operations as director of the head corps. I'm just saying that she more than likely had a hand in it, no matter how deep the septic tank runs. Anyone who had any decision making in the organization has some sort of "blood" on their hands in my opinion.

  17. It stays the same because the paradigm shift would be more painful than maintaining the status quo. Until things become too painful, nothing will change.

  18. If that’s true, why is Mr Atchison in charge of DCI, why does DCI need an office/staff? Why don’t member corps’ representatives staff the DCI organization? DCI is the umbrella organization to which the corps belong. If the umbrella isn’t taking a proactive approach to ensuring the viability of the corps underneath that umbrella then it’s time for paradigm shift.

  19. Okay, but until the speculation is and should be welcome, and not silenced. This is a discussion board and people are discussing the current situation at hand, of which speculation has been and will continue to be a part of it. Historically the captain goes down with the ship, or at least one with respect and dignity did.

  20. The group I work for (albeit is open class so it’s likely a much different world than world class) pays by the day. If you break down the hourly rate it’s anywhere from $4-5/hr depending on the daily schedule. We already struggle enough getting people to teach for how little pay it is (most people have real life costs). Taking 10% off the staff budget saves a couple grand at best, but you’re probably hurting member experience by losing staff more than you’re gaining anything by saving minimal money.

  21. You've participated in off topic discussions before, so I'm failing to see the reason why you pinged this as off topic...not trying to come down on you, just a little confused about your motive.

My plans changed when the Cadets dropped the entire 2012 show on their YouTube channel ON CHRISTMAS. If they're going to give us such an excellent gift, who am I to argue?" https://medi-nerd.com/2022/12/26/12-corps-of-christmas-2012-cadets/
